Going all in on Erik karlsson and Evander Kane really killed the team.
By the time they made the Karlsson deal, it was practically over for the Sharks...
A team that wouldn't spend money on Pavelski instead invests heavily in a D that was taken down 3 levels by injury and skilled-but-troubled forward in Kane.

Gonna be interesting to see what the Oilers do about Kane.

Right now - without that Karlsson trade, SJ would have a 30-goal young center in Norris and a their choice of Stuetzle, Raymond, Sanderson or Drysdale.

At the time, it felt like the Senators gave away Karlson for nothing. And that's usually how these big trades go - big name traded for prospects that may or may not make it and late round firsts.
But the Sharks fell apart and gave the Sens a lottery pick.

The Karlsson trade/deal reminds me a bit of the Seth Jones trade/deal. The nail in the coffin.

The Sharks should have started their rebuild a few years ago, around the time the Kings started it. They had some great players that they could have traded for picks and prospects.

They were a top 5 or so team in 18-19 and went to the conference final. They had all those huge contracts well before they went to crap in 19-20.

Few teams choose to rebuild. They either hit bottom, then begin the process, or top players choose to leave, which helps in hitting bottom, and then begin the process.

As long as top players want to stay with, or come to, your team, they will be given big contracts. Especially with the cap. Before 2005, you could run a budget team like the Devils, or even Oilers. Moving pieces around due to financial constraints, while still trying to win with younger and cheaper players. With the cap, you have to allocate a certain minimum amount to your roster, and the only teams that sort of cheat that system are the Coyotes of the world.

The Kings didn't want to start rebuilding when they did, and the Sharks weren't going to start when they should've. Pittsburgh is unlikely to win the Cup this year. A lot of competition out there. Younger competition. They should've already begun rebuilding. The long term health of the organization is no longer found in Sidney Crosby. But, have they done the smart thing? No. They haven't even made it difficult for Malkin or Letang to stay.

We all know Bedard is ending up in Pittsburgh. They got nothing to worry about.

man never thought of who I do not want to get Bedard. I think Anaheim maybe on the top of my list, not that the ducks don't deserve that talent, but just so he does not kill LA with Zegras.
If Chicago gets him I will probably be the most pissed. Especially if they win the lottery without being one of the worse teams.
Seattle, Columbus and Arizona I would all be ok with. Montreal, New Jersey and Buffalo would be fine too.
My hope is Philly gets him (assuming LA is well out of the sweepstakes)

Doug Wilson, take a bow. Will always give them shit for no Cups, but what a tenure otherwise--almost always a super competitive team at the very least. Can give props where they're due and like I said the best part is no Cup so can still needle them too. Best of both worlds, haha. Cheers. Likeable dude.

how to you allow your GM to sign the heartl deal and then step down. I doubt this was an impromptu decision and signing that contract or dealing the player should have been done by a GM who is there long term.
Joe Will has been acting GM since November. He probably was aware of he alertly deal, but not sure how much he was involved. I hate the Sharts as which as most on this site, but wish him well with his health issues. Hope he does recover, but with this news, it might not look good.
The signing that does get me is how EDM allowed Chiarelli to extend Koskinen and then fire him. That one makes no sense to me.

forgot Wilson was away from the team so ya I linked this to Chiarelli. That still makes no sense to me. The contract was crazy as soon as it was signed and then when they fired him seemed even worse.

Still a year away from his draft. Nobody has any clue who the bottom 5 will be after next season. 5'9" is not the ideal size for a center.

I hoped he would hang on and drag it out for a few more years, just a couple more poor deals would have guaranteed SJ would be in the shitter for the next 5+ seasons.
