They were warned about Tyson Barrie too. He's been a mess for the most part.

Barrie made some sense to me given his point totals last year and his cap hit is pretty decent for the offensive output he had the year before but I also agree with you, they knew their issue was on the defensive side of the game and they spent $4.5 mill in cap space to bring back the modern day Sandis Ozolinsh.

the two year deal is what got me. Giving him a one year when they did would have made sense. Same with Smith....well no actually bringing back Smith made no sense at the time, and still doesn't. but is made worse with the extra year. At least it is not a +35 contract...

Same reason the Kings had to throw an extra year to a 33 year old Mitchell when he was coming off a concussion. Or the extra year for Kovalchuk.

Unless you're both currently winning and in a great location, the only way you get players is more money now, or more term.

With McDavid and Leon the oilers should be winning.

No one was signing Barrie to that deal, the 2nd year was not needed. Also both the oilers guys I mentioned were re-signing, Mitchell and Kovalchuk were UFA. Completely different.

Got to think one of Smith or Dadonov is a gone in short order. Never understood that Dadonov deal, don't know what they saw in him when he was with the Sens.

Smith is still a good hockey player. There is value there.

That's where things could get interesting... Dadonov has a M-NTC and Smith is such a good fit on that team.

with Stone goin LTIR they may not need to do a lot. I think I saw a tweet from Capfriendly that due to prorated salaries they could put some guys in the AHL and Stone on LTIR and it will give them room to bring in Eichel and A-Mart.

What does should have to with anything?

The extra year was needed to keep him in Edmonton, regardless of who else was looking at him. And UFAs are UFAs, wherever they played in the previous season. They have complete freedom in where to sign. You have to entice them.

Smith made sense on a one year deal, he was really solid last year so having him in a co-number one/backup role would have been great insurance. Hard to believe they couldn't have added a pick with Koiskinen and traded him to Buffalo or Arizona so they could pursue a legit number one though. Two years for Smith is just idiotic.

Dadanov's NTC is a 10 team no trade list, so there could still be options to send him to.

I fully believe players have looked at playing in Edmonton as Desirable only because of the fact they have these guys.

You can bet they will keep/stash AMart on LTIR for a bit longer.

Vegas probably won't have to make any moves with Stone's back problems. LTIR like Pacioretty last year when he returned in Game 7.

Athletic released an article breaking down how sheltered some D-men are.

Was a great Article.

I can't see what the colors mean. The label is a blur.
Grey = Playing against elite player of other team
Black = Next level
Grey = Lowest level of competition

Drew is leading the lead in quality of opposition for D-men.
I hope the athletic does this for wingers and centers (separately).

Almost 5 more % than any other notable top pairing dman, as well--next up are Pelech and McAvoy.

Shows how remarkable he is and his season is, wish he hadn't been out, completely Norris caliber.

I am ready for the NHL to introduce an award for best offensive defenseman. and call it the Bobby Orr. That way the Norris can go to best all around. Some years would be the same guy some years not. Like the heart and the rocket

Arizona State University has approved the coyotes (they don’t get a capital C anymore, they don’t deserve that) playing there for at least three years. So embarrassing for the league.

And apparently the site of the projected new arena in Tempe is a former dump. I called them the Arizona Landfills because they’ll take any contract for a pick and now their new arena is going to be on a DUMP?!? You can’t make this shit up!

:dunce:  :joker:

ASU will host a Frozen Four before the Coyotes host a Stanley Cup Final game. Book it.
