Sakic has done a good job there despite not being a very good drafter overall. He's in his 9th year in charge, inherited Landeskog and Duchene (who he got a terrible return for), but drafted three guys who are absolute stars.

Just goes to show again that if you can hit on a few key guys and fill in the roster with guys you target to your team philosophy, it's all it takes to build a powerhouse. Easier said than done, obviously.

Even though it's a different style, they are built very similarly to the way the Kings and Blackhawk teams were.

Didn't it take Sakic forever to trade Duchene? Sitting on his hands, too scared to pull the trigger, waiting for the "right deal" to come along. I might be wrong, but I'm almost sure there was a lot of criticism toward Sakic for letting a guy who didn't want to be there fester. Then he got his great deal, but only because Ottawa happened to go into the crapper after making that trade.
He realized that having three top 6 young centers and an older Stastny developing at the same time was terrific for competition, and when MacKinnon proved out instead on converting them to the wing, he traded two of them to fill the holes in his roster. Duchene knew where the Avs bread was buttered and wanted out instead of playing second fiddle. O'Reilly was converted to the wing from the 3rd middle spot, but wanted to be a center and had a bunch of contract issues and signed an offer sheet with Calgary that they matched

Duchene ended up in a 3 way deal that netted Girard. O'Reilly had a bad arbitration negotiation and ended up traded to Buffalo for Zadarov and Compher.

I see it as the proactive results of healthy competition, even if those deals played out to maybe be less than market value. That's for fans and pundits to argue about, reality is that sometimes removing road blocks is the best part of a deal, even if they aren't seen as "wins" by fans.

I don't judge GMs for not winning Cups, I judge them based on how well they put their teams in position to win. It takes more than a great roster to win a Cup, including things you just can't plan on. But being put in that position IS something you can plan. Even though the AVs haven't won anything yet, its hard to fault their decision making.

Move them where?

Quebec City would have happily taken them, move Columbus back to the west in that scenario. You have a spectacular hockey fanbase and built in rivalries

Milwaukee could have taken them, tell Chicago to pound sand, especially in light of what happened there. They wouldn't have gotten ideal dates at FiServ Forum but it's certainly more ideal than where they are now. It's not a Canadian fanbase, but still a strong hockey state that would certainly draw more than Phoenix. They stay in the same division as geographic rivals Chicago, Minnesota and St. Louis. It would have worked assuming Chicago doesn't make a legal challenge.

Portland

Houston

Kansas City

Heck, there are better arena options in places like Green Bay, Indianapolis, San Diego, Omaha. And probably more hockey fans too.

Phoenix is just a total disaster and embarrassment for the league, and just when you thought it couldn't get worse they will be playing in front of 3k fans at a college teams arena for the foreseeable future. I have mostly been happy with what Gary Batma...errr Bettman has done for the league but the 25 year run in Arizona is certainly the biggest black eye other than losing an entire year.

And if Columbus's owner doesn't want to move back? A lot of people seem to think there's a lot of vaccancy signs in arenas around the country begging for the Coyotes to call it home. I don't even know why QC fans want the Coyotes. They suck.

There are plenty of markets that would welcome an NHL team, whether they suck or not. A lot of the Coyotes sucking is because the market and finances doesn't allow them to keep any of their best players.

The Blue Jackets might not like it, but if the board voted and the NHLPA agreed they would have to. And look on the bright side, they wouldn't have to deal with Pittsburgh and Detroit fans flooding into their arena like what has happened throughout much of their history.

But whatever decision is made, the NHL in Phoenix has never worked and is very unlikely to ever work. Bettman is 70 years old, Sterm retired at 72, Tagliabue at 66, Selig at 80(!). So you have to figure that within a few years that turd will finally be flushed.

This was already disproven, but carry on.

The school is requiring them to use both the team and school logos on the ice, but they cannot make changes to any advertisement deals already negotiated by the school.

Please, don't get your news from a meme.

Contract or move them back up to Canada - fallout from the Gretzky effect. Also, I never liked the Columbus franchise concept.. i pictured guys dying to get out of there.. and that has been the case. Then again speaking selfishly - if not for Columbus there most likely would not be a 2012 or 2014

False.

"In-ice advertising will be a revenue source for Arizona State, and the Coyotes aren’t allowed to modify the look of the ice surface – including the Arizona State logo at center ice — on broadcasts to protect ASU’s permanent advertisers in the building. It is noted that this doesn’t and shouldn’t impact opposing broadcasts filming at ASU."
