Update: Alex Pietrangelo will be withdrawing from the 2025 4Nations Face-Off to tend to an ailment and prepare for the remainder of the regular season with Vegas.

Still think it will be worse for 2nd line to 4th line guys.
I would like to see them extend ELC to 4 years, increase the wage and bonus structure to make the extra year more tenable and make it UFA after ELC. Oh and then you’ll make it 5 year cap and 6 if it’s the team that holds ELC rights. Then you’ll see a f*** ton of player movement.

I mean think about it, the concept of RFA is just wild. i think if it’s ELC -> UFA, you’ll see less GMs f*** around with brining kids in at like 18/19 because you don’t want the ELC to kick in until the kid is really ready and that should reduce all those cases of horrible development.

One can hope. I can imagine this tournament was pretty underwhelming for him after he won gold at the 2014 Olympics and was not guaranteed to be in the lineup at the 4 Nations tournament.

The things that go into new deals like cap %, 5on5 point production, comparables etc.. for fprwards would still be there. I dont know if it just means automatically cap% on new deals just skyrocket

I think you don't really know until the rule's implemented and you see how it plays out. What I like to point out on this topic is fans tend to look at their own teams and think if they didn't have those extended anchor contracts then their teams could better utilize cap space and be better. But apply that to 32 teams, and with cost certainty making revenue an even 50/50 split, and consider there really isn't additional talent out there being blocked out of the league due to cap constraints. It's not the best analogy as nothing's actually sinking, but 'fixing' anything is kind of just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I'd also add for the quality of players that tend to earn 8 year contracts, the latter end of their career where they're being overpaid for their services is probably balanced the first few years early in their careers starting with the ELC where they can be majorly underpaid.

I mean lower UFA could lead to more trades, just look at the NBA. Also having more trades is good because it drives discussion and coverage can theoretically pull non fans in. “Oh the <local team> apparently pulled off a crazy ass trade, I wonder what the deal is”.

I think this is mostly due to the fact that hockey is a very dangerous sport . You can get all kinds of injuries all the time that will allow you to keep playing while really diminishing your ability. Players feel that if they earned a contract they have to keep getting paid like that. The problem to me is the length and the fact that you can't renegociate the contract like in football. I'm talking about real football and not american football. The renogociation has pros and cons since you'd have to decrease/increase the salary.

I don't think that is the case. There are only so many cap dollars to go around. Plus we've had some high end players coming out of BC recently and we'll more likely to be European focused rather than American focused if that comes to pass.
