RE: Tavares, the number one thing that stood out to me (and what probably stood out to the CRA) was being in Canada for 183 days plus (which automatically puts you as a Canadian resident for tax purposes).

Yes, there's a whole lot of other stuff in there, but I highly doubt given prior precendence and rulings it would hold up in court if he was legitimately a non-resident. Maybe I'm missing something as it's been 10 years since I left the industry, but the article seemed to be making a whole lot of out nothing for headline purposes when really the residency thing should make this pretty cut and dry.

Also, f the Oilers. Stan Bowman is a piece of human garbage, and getting a job so soon after covering the Beach stuff up shows how terrible the league is at just cycling through the same guys over and over again.

At least oilers fans seem to be just as ashamed about this hiring as the outside world, so that’s something.

I had no idea that's why you were chastising the Yzerplan. Odd.

I'm not sure your point holds regardless because Yzerman definitely did not do everything right in a tank: He didn't secure a 1C or a 1G. Even a lower end tandem of Horvat + Larkin could have saved him.

Tanking is no guarantee. It never was.
For sure, Tanking is no guarantee, not with the lottery system. Wings got no lottery luck, thus were never in a position to draft a high offensive C. They didn't make any big splashes in 21 off season which was the last one before Raymond/Seider arrived. Unless they got to the top 3 to get Beniers (he tops out at a 2C, which maybe Kasper or Danielsson reach as well) in 2021 or Cooley (has the potential to match or even surpass Larkin production) in 2022, not sure they could do any better than Edvinsson and Kasper. 23, would be hard to drop down that badly from the 80 points they got to 60 or less which the bottom 4 earned that season.

when you pay agent like 8% or something like that, I am guessing it doesn’t cover just getting you the contract and some other endorsement deals. modern sports agents services probably includes tax, financial management stuff and other services.
Any good sports agency needs to have either in-house tax specialists or have a good relationship with a tax firm(s) to consult with when setting up the contract structure and understand what the player needs to do to minimize taxes. Something went off course since he played 17-18 with the Isles.

this should be interesting. oilers are really embracing the heel turn.

it is an interesting business decision. whether or not you think he has served sufficient punishment (i do), it's a really questionable brand decision to court controversy like this when you know many fans, including a lot of younger fans, feel otherwise. hockey is entertainment. this is entertainment for other fanbases.

ron mclean is really going to squirm.

plus as a hockey hire this seems like chiarelli 2.0. there's just no magic to bowman that justifies taking this kind of brand hit.

we'll see how it works out.

Bowman thought it was a good idea to trade for Jones when Keith left that same off-season to EDM via trade, and Kane/Toews were down to the final 2 years with Toews missing all of the covid shortened year with an illness. Not really the same guy coming back. That group's run was over and Not sure DCate/Dach were the guys to lead them back. I mean, most of their prospects going back to their last cup win in 2015 had not done much aside from DCat.

Is that the kind of decision making you want?

He's really made a hard, and transparent, turn when he figured out he wasn't popular in the Vancouver market and Oilers would be much more susceptible to him.
he doesn't have much competition there. the old guard is near retirement age, and seravalli really loves blue jeans and getting his hands dirty, so he's probably angling for a job. he certainly wouldn't survive here.

He also stepped in it, a lot, online in ways that get large parts of the Vancouver twitterverse angry but is perfectly cool with Oilers fans/media.

Seravelli aged 10 more years after that Stan Bowman press conference. What’s his take on it
