There was some discussion about Alyn McCauley.
Until the concussion issues he was headed in the right direction, and then stepped up in the playoffs.
Maybe that's Holmberg, maybe it's Minten.
I can't think of a player who has stepped up in the playoffs in this current iteration of the team.
Other than 20-21 when Nylander carried Kerfoot.

Alyn McCauley and Gary Roberts were magical that playoff run when Sundin was hurt.

We might have Knies currently?

McCauley, ya, thats not exactly a shining light but I can't say you're wrong there.

Fair point, but unlike Toronto you can't systemically blame Edmonton's stars (or at least the big two) for not showing up in the playoffs on a consistently mass scale.

For us, the core has always been a problem. For them, it's literally everything else.
well maybe they should win despite that

Has the 2nd highest ppg in playoffs history

His production the past 3 years has matched/surpassedpeak Messier playoffs.

Don't bring up weak competition or being behind Gretzky

Messier and oilers beat up on weak teams as well in 80s and early 90s (flames, jets being two medicore teams of that era)

Messier was also behind Gretzky and # 2 option on a super stacked oilers dynasty

The oilers are hurt by an idiot GM who pays a 5M D-man in nurse 9.25M and an 1M goalie in campbell 5M

Oilers top end talent is as lethal as it comes in hockey. Last 3 years the leading scorers and ppg producers are Oilers duo and Hyman & Bouchard very high as well.

Holland had a cup winning core on a platter and he botched it

If we replaced our core with the oilers im confident evan dubas or treliving would have been able to built a cup winner by now with them
haha ok man this all Holland's fault and Draisatl is better than Messier and Hyman is better than Kurri

How pathetic is it that the Oilers have two players producing top 5 ppg in playoffs all time right now and they have never made the cup finals. Its honestly so embarrassing. Might make a good thread when they eventually go out against Dallas.

Mcdavid < Gretzky
Hyman > Kurri
Draisaitl = messier
Bouchard < Coffey

This looks like a dynasty core the past 3 playoffs

Holland f***ing up with campebll + Nurse deals screwed the oilers a cup
Might be a stretch to say Hyman is better than Kurri.

Hyman has been great, but Kurri scored 600 goals and had 1400 points.

If he was a product of Gretzky, than Hyman is a product of McDavid

Edmonton deploys Hyman differently than we did. We had him fetch the pucks out of the corners for our ballerinas. Edmonton has him parked in front of the net.
It makes a huge difference playing with great players, but still he’s a terrific player.

Depending on who starts that thread, you can bet on it being shut down quickly.

Biggest difference between Dallas and the Oilers is goaltending. Oettinger hasn't been great or anything, but he hasn't given the Oilers a total freebie or two like Skinner has. It's a really tight series though and still could go either way.

I think Skinner might actually be worse than Samsonov.

McDavid is the best player I've ever seen on the rush, and just as devastating on the PP, but in a very tight-checking game give me Drai. His otherworldly puck control and vision are unstoppable. He doesn't need empty space to make you look like a bitch.
McDavid can be pushed out of games once things tighten up, that’s why Draisaitl has always been the better playoff performer, plus he’s a superior goal scorer than McDavid.

Hot take: Draisaitl will age better of the two. So much of Conor’s game is based off speed, I kind of question what he’ll be once he inevitably loses a step.

If memory serves they basically didnt go back to losing until Sundin came back.

Sooner or later they were going to lose. Sundin was still great, Sundin was Sundin
He scored that tieing goal against Carolina.

By the time Mats came back, that team was totally burned out and injuries took their toll
We played 3 game 7s (ottawa, Islanders and then Caroina)

We played hard, physical hockey. There was nothign left

Some of the McDavid magic I've watched this playoffs was slight of hand that hasn't quite worked.

Beating one, two players but then nothing, or resetting.

Would not be surprised if he's playing with something, like he was start of season.

Draisaitl is usually voted best passer correct?

Darnell Nurse is making 9.2 million (10.5% of the cap).

This has to be in the conversation as worst contract in the league.

EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid did not play for the Edmonton Oilers in a 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place on Saturday because of a lower-body injury.

It was the third straight game the Oilers captain has missed.

Probably a continuation of this injury in April.

Who knows, McDavid’s zipping around the ice as normal, looks fine to me.

It is.

I was quite concerned Rielly would use that as a comparable when he was re-signing.

When he came in at 7.5 I was relieved.

I'm hoping Morgan is 100% healthy this upcoming season. He looked quite slow this year.

Rielly is easily better than Nurse also.

He would be getting absolutely roasted constantly if he was making 9+ million.

This isn't basketball though. No one player can carry a team to the Cup, no matter how good, and that's why I hate basketball and love hockey.

Depth is key, and that's why managing your cap efficiently is so important. Both Toronto and Edmonton suck ass through a straw when it comes to salary allocation.

The Rask trade hurt more, it was franchise defining.
Without a doubt.

The Rask trade made the Kessel trade look like nothing.

What a shame the Oilers had a complete meltdown. Absolute shame, I tell you
Here's to hopefully two more meltdowns this round!
Oilers are done.
If the Oilers lose Game 4 it's over. Dallas can put them on the ropes here and they need to take advantage of that.

The issue is that the Oilers have the two best players in the league so if you make a mistake with one or both of them on the ice it's probably going in your net.

Yeah, they'll have 4 double digits this year, and 3 next year.

They have to find some way to have 3 lines that are effective and 1 line that treads water.

This year Tavares is still there, as a double digit. My guess is next year he returns with a Malkin type deal.

Matthews - can shoot and pass
Nylander - can shoot and pass
marner - can pass and shoot

I just don't see Matthews and marner separated.

We can't afford having Matthews, Marner and Nylander. You can't have two wingers taking up more than 25% of your cap. We can't afford the depth we need when so much cap space is taken up by guys that aren't truly game-breakers when it matters.

This formula just doesn't fricken work. It just doesn't. We've proven that over and over. It doesn't work and they failed. Time to change or don't waste the fans' time.
