Leading Virginia Senate Democrat deals major setback for Washington sports arena bill

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A leading Democratic Virginia legislator said Monday that proposed legislation to help pave the way for the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals to relocate to northern Virginia is dead, as far as she’s concerned.

Sen. L. Louise Lucas, who holds great sway in the General Assembly as chair of the Senate Finance & Appropriations Committee, first said over the weekend on social media that legislation underpinning the deal was “not ready for prime time” and would not receive a hearing in her committee. The decision effectively killed the Senate version of the legislation because of a procedural deadline this week, though another bill is making progress in the House of Delegates, which is also controlled by Democrats.

Lucas, who took questions from reporters Monday morning along with Senate Leader Scott Surovell, said Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin had made a series of mistakes in trying to advance the deal through a General Assembly now in full Democratic control after November’s elections.

Among them, she said, was a weekend speech at Washington and Lee University in which Youngkin took a broad swipe at Democrats collectively, saying the party does “not believe in — nor do they want — a strong America.”

Are we ready to declare a playoff spot for Philly?
They are having a great season, and are ahead of a few teams, but have also played more games that most team around them. I wouldn't declare it yet, but the odds are looking pretty good. From some CDN Betting place...

I don’t get it, I’ve worked for pricks, but they were fair and had your back, everybody liked working for them because they let you do your job. On the other hand if you didn’t pull your weight………
He needs to be more like Keefe so he can guarantee himself 5+ year coaching tenures.

I can't help but feel like Vancouver is going to implode in round 1. I dunno, they look good and all but the success just feels like a mirage

I am not so sure.

They have a good goalie, their backend is pretty good, and all 4 lines can score.

That's not to say they can't blow it. If they win the division I think they can win against Nash, Cal or whoever gets the 7/8 seed.

Their most likely opponent, based on today's standings is St. Louis. They've lost their last two to St. Louis.

They haven't played LA yet this year. Nashville they've beaten three times already.

Vancouver has a good team, and as long as their goaltending remains strong, they have a good chance.

Who knew that $15 mil in dead cap space would hurt?

They are actually 7-3 in their last ten, despite losing Spurgeon for the rest of the season.

Yeah, so their recent play is probably masking more issues.

Trading Fiala after his career year for perhaps their 2nd. best player, Faber?
It could really be ugly without that deal.

And the coach is solid……

I still find it hilarious that they somehow preferred 15M in dead cap vs just letting Suter and Parise play out their contracts.

9% Cup chance for Oilers

3% Leafs , I might agree, but ROFL.

Considering you get 1% just by getting into the SC playoffs, someone did a great job the last couple of years getting us up there. Thoughts and prayers to Pittsburg

To be fair they were allegedly a bit toxic/bad attitudes off the ice

That said, it's still probably one of the worst management decisions one can think of in recent memory. Made even worse by the fact that Suter would go on to still be a top 4 D man on an even better team.....
