Bunting Matthews Marner
Hyman Tavares Nylander

Would have been a nice top six for a couple of years. We'd have to let Bunting walk still last offseason but by that point we'd have Knies ready to play.

Unfortunately it looks like this was a miscalculation. Hyman is a late bloomer who only made the NHL in his mid-20s and gets better every single year. He's still only 31 years old and doesn't look like he'll be slowing down anytime soon. At most, he might be a drag for the final 1-2 years of the deal.

He basically got the TJ Oshie deal except he was younger and in his prime still (Oshie was Hyman's age now when he signed his 8 year deal), and that deal actually aged well for the Caps as Oshie was fairly productive for most of it and was an integral part of their Cup run.

I'd agree it looks like a potential misstep to let him walk. BUT the logic is still sound to have walked away.to begin with. In future I'd still rather be risk adverse with avoiding those types of deals.

He looks great right now, but I'm not so sure if trust his body even at 33/34 in a few years. He's bucking the age decline trend so far in terms of production, but you can only outskate time for so long

Definitely one of the odder career curves a player has taken in recent memory. Good for him

Hyman's arc of fan love is pretty funny.

People hated him being stapled to Matthews his first year, and now most of us would welcome that back.
Lord knows Babcock f***ed a lot of things up but he churned out some gold with Hyman with the way he developed him, I was a hater until it was impossible.

Yep. Plus he was coming off of some risky injuries that could have impacted his skating.

His jump in offensive production is quite the exception to the typical scoring curve for players of his skill.

Not to mention he wasn’t exactly a difference maker in his playoff career with the Leafs either

Only ones who hated Hyman on Matthews wing then were the very analytical posters saying Hyman held Matthews back when it was Hymans skillset that allowed Matthews to do what he does best. People can hate on Babcock all they want and question some lineup decisions but he knew what kind of players that skilled players needed on their line to retrieve pucks for them.

As Lou said, too much money and too long but Barzal performing up to the contract. Like Hyman, more points than any Leaf not named Nylander.

I mean, it's pretty normal for people to dislike someone being forced into a role they couldn't yet handle, and then like them in that role when they're developed and able to handle it. Hyman put in a lot of work to improve, and then put in a lot of work to not let his injuries derail his career, and now he's found chemistry and a prime spot next to the best player in the world.

Saw a thread on the Coyotes board "Matt Dumba sucks" guess we didn't miss out on much by not signing him based on the way they talk about him.

At least he's healthy?

The Leafs should have traded a pick or something to get Durzi instead though

If any other team did this, there would be a thread on the main boards and calls for a suspension.

Because it’s Tampa, nothing. This team gets away with being the dirtiest team in the league when they’re down because no one watches their games

Watson has gone full mental these past couple years.. f***en cheap play that should have caused more reaction

Good thing we have reaves

Disgusting. Clear intent to injure. Watson is such a baby, and that should be a suspension. You could even see Motte being like "the **** is this idiot doing?"

Three things about that:

1. What a complete douchebag move by Watson. Idiot.

2. Full respect for Tyler Motte going over to check on Lauzon there.

3. Talk about a random amount for a max fine. (unless it reflects a certain % of his salary)
