Haven't been posting much since Matthews' contract extension really bummed me the F out. Also not been following hockey news much.

was just checking news that this babcock thing popped up under sports.

Mainboard has so many pages I ain't going through them all. The article said babcock was fired for looking at pictures on the players' phones. Seems ridiculous to me

Did he steal the phone or grabbed it from players and invaded privacy? or players show them voluntarily?

was there anything else to the story?

Sparks notes version of the events would be much appreciated
The sparks notes answer to your post is:

The Matthews contract is fine.

There is zero reason for it to bum you out and effect you personally.

Babcock went and met up with players before the season started.

He asked players to show them personal photos to learn more about them.

Some players felt okay with it.

Some players felt pressured into it and like they didn't have a choice.

For some players, Babcock took their phone for minutes on end, searching through their photos.

For some players, he AirDropped the photos up on display to be seen for all.

Is it the biggest scandal in the world? No.

Does Babcock have a history of using his power and authority to coerce (or, even inadvertently, make players feel coerced) into doing something they aren't comfortable with? Yes.

Will some people be okay with showing off their photos and personal lives? Yes.

Will others be highly uncomfortable sharing personal details, and or handing over their personal device and media without notice? Yes.

NHLPA felt he put players in a poor position.

Babcock resigned (likely under pressure or suggestion).

Very well said. I am not giving my phone to my boss or anyone under any circumstances, as it is absolutely none of his business even though I have nothing on it. Not his right.

Lol all Babcock had to do was coach the team. Didn’t even need to talk to players. Tell the assistants and trainers to do it. Let whoever be 6’4 all day and go home and have a good meal. Nope.

Just gonna put this out there. Babcock wasn't a Dubas hire, and Babcock was protected here for the longest time. Dubas wasn't allowed to fire him.

Is it any wonder none of the stars wanted to take a discount to play for Babcock??

I'll give you my phone when you can pry it from my cold dead hands.

In a weird sick twisted sorta way Babcock's team building exercise worked. I'm pretty sure they'll all be stronger than before this happened. There'll be all kinds of heart to heart talks between players and management now.

Any other coach and this probably wouldn't have even been an issue.

This was a hit job. And if this didn't do him in there would have been something else later. It was only a matter of time.

Players today have all the power and they know it.

Add in the fact they all have skin as thick as an onion and it was never gonna end well. Better it happened now than after the season started. Get it out of the way early.

My phone is attached to my wrists.

You can look, but don't touch. Not like there's anything incriminating or embarassing on it. But the fact of the matter is this thing is coming with me to the grave.

The only way you're getting my phone is by peeling it out of my fingers before the rigamortis sets in.

Victim blaming....

You know what... Actions have consequences. The actions are those of Babcock's, not the players. The thing is, there is accountability today, at a level people couldn't get away with in the past.

Personally, I don't understand those who voice against accountability. What is it that they are personally scared of being held accountable for, that makes them rally against it?

Those defending Babcock's actions are out of touch.

Imagine a new boss at your work asks to see everyone's phone pics for any reason. Would you actually hand over you phone to them? If so, after he looks at the pic you had selected, how would you feel if he kept scrolling?

Let's remember folks, Babcock has a history of treating vets much, much better than younger players. The vets probably were cool with a one and done, showing of pics. But no way would anyone be cool with a someone they barely know scrolling through their phone.

Thing is this isn’t an isolated incident with Babs

Get gets zero benefit if the doubt

Knowing what we know about the Marner incident I would hazard a guess that part of Babcock’s “team building” agenda is to separate the veterans from some of the more vulnerable rookies and push and pull levers and play mind games as necessary. In short, the bad behaviour and intimidation is not a flaw but a feature in his management of people.

Where you create a culture, where the players aren't comfortable coming to the GM, that's an internal problem too.

""

I don’t know if that’s always true, Matthews got arrested and didn’t tell management and he was given everything. I don’t think that culture is just limited to specific organizations.

I think it’s a problem in sports in general, so many athletes have come forward with things and nothing gets done or the issues get pushed aside or the player gets burried in the minors or cut for bringing something up.

You can have the best culture and players will still often refrain from communicating things to coaches / management.

He told his mentor and Marleau told him not to tell management, management usually creates their own problems by bringing in dogshit leadership cores. It’s a wonder we didn’t have any young players completely flame out under the Lou/Babcock/Marleau “leadership” group, speaks to Rielly and Kadri’s character that they survived Burke/Wilson/Carlyle, the tank years, and the dinosaurs and managed to become good character vets in spite of that.
