Francis should pass hard on Price. However if this tweet is true, it would be dumb not to select Weber.

In this scenario, this is the space Seattle would accrue if Weber retired after each of the next four seasons.
[TBODY]
Retirement yearCap BonusAccrued bonus

20221.8571.857

20234.8576.714

20246.85713.57

20256.85720.43
[/TBODY]
Like the recapture penalties, I imagine the bonuses would be capped at Weber's 7.857 cap hit and the additional would roll over. So, if Weber retired after the 2024-25 season Seattle would be able to exceed the cap ceiling by 7.857 in 2025-26 & 2026-27 and by 4.714 in 2027-28. I'd take that madness over anything else Montreal has to offer.

I would take Price over Weber...Weber might not even play a game next season...it seems like all that injury talk about Price is a smokescreen, so that Seattle doesn't take him.

I found it ironic that some ripped Lou for protecting Martin and Clutterbuck over Eberle and Bailey. Clearly Lou is trying to dump a $5 AAV while Dubas and many Leaf fans hope to dump Kerfoot's 3.5m AAV. .

A betting man might suggest NYI are intentionally trying to dump a $5 mil forward that plays rather soft and then turn around and sign Zach Hyman for their former cap money/space used, who plays the physical high compete game that Islanders thrive under.

Lou wasn't silly enough however to use the 4-4-1 option and protect 4 dmen including Nick Leddy, because he values those playoff style warrior players of his. He used the expansion draft to clear up his cap issues by dealing Ladd (inherited contract) with a pair of 2nds for cap space and then turned around and dealt Leddy for 2nd and Panik to recover his losses and create $12 mil in free cap.

I could have only wished Dubas could have been wise enough to deal Justin Holl for a 2nd round pick (like Leddy) to recover some of his past draft pick losses (ie Foligno) or replace Hallander (former 2nd) or dealt Holl for a younger forward another team wasn't able to protect and then go 7-3-1 protecting McCann & Kerfoot and return from Holl strengthening the Leafs forward group?. You don't need to protect Holl, you could have turned him into another asset and protected + 3 extra forwards. Dubas only strategy was to deal a prospect and a pick for a player he was going to expose and could now lose.

Leafs can't afford to bring back Hyman at $5 or more and other teams might very well be using the expansion draft to free cap space to sign him away from the Leafs. Even if the Leafs lost Kerfoot by exposing him wouldn't it put them in a great position to even bring back their own player who has been a key part of the team. Leafs

May look like a bad move on a micro level talent wise.

But Clutterbuck is a UFA after this year and his money comes off the books. Martin is relatively fine salary wise for what he brings, whose salary isn’t a detriment either way. Getting out under a contract of a 31-year old making $5 to 5.5 million with three years left, coupled with the savings from the Leddy and Ladd salary dumps, would give the Islanders even more flexibility.

So on a macro level, it’s a pretty good strategy, even if the Kraken call Lou’s bluff and take either. The Islanders are probably hoping they actually do.

ESPN is explaining their decision this way..

What to make of the Isles' decisions

When the protection lists came out and I saw Josh Bailey and Jordan Eberle both available from the Islanders, my first instinct was that GM Lou Lamoriello cut a side deal with Kraken GM Ron Francis. That might be the case, but it was pointed out to me that a theme of the Islanders protection list is cost-cutting, which falls in line with their recent moves shedding the contracts of Andrew Ladd and Nick Leddy.

The Islanders are often the toughest team on which to get information, as Lamoriello runs a tight ship. But we know that getting a new deal for restricted free agents Anthony Beauvillier and (especially) Adam Pelech are priorities for the Islanders. It appears re-signing UFA Casey Cizikas is also high on Lamoriello's to-do list.

Should Seattle select Bailey or Eberle, the door for Kyle Palmieri to re-sign will be opened, or the recently bought-out Zach Parise to slot in.

New York also needs to replace Nick Leddy, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Isles in on the Ryan Suter courtship.

NHL draft week news and rumors: Expansion buzz, trade candidates, more

Isles strategy according to speculation anyways is that Lou Lam is making cap space and roster room to perhaps add both Parise and Suter to his roster.

If I am Francis, I would take Price and Quick, Gio and Tarasenko. Just one of those goalies get hot at the right time means winning the Cup.
It's also 30+M in Cap space. over 16M on the goalies. I take Gio and one of the 2 goalies- Taresenko is damaged goods. I would need a nice sweetener to take on that contract

With a weak Pacific and having Price and Quick in the back. All that team needs to do is sneak into the playoffs and let the Goalies do their thing.

Really interested to see what the Habs do this offseason. No doubt their playoff run will push their ownership group towards wanting to contend again next year, but 7 UFA's plus the hole left by Weber is a lot of turnover.

Should Seattle take Price, that would be a massive fortunate break for Bergevin.

They also have a lot of draft capital stocked up. I expect a really busy off-season of parlaying assets to win now and some good dollar spent in free agency.

In short, Bergevin could really put them in a bad cap situation if he makes short sighted moves to 'win now' and Price isn't taken by Seattle.

The league is crazy now. Players are signing for so cheap nowadays - the Bruins got Carlo dirt cheap and will soon be getting Hall dirt cheap too.

How do the Leafs even compete with this? We're paying full price for all of our guys.

Carlo did not go for "dirt cheap". The man provides zero offensive value and got a number starting with a 4. That is not even with full UFA years either. They bought RFA years with that too.

Hall has struggled. He has major boom potential, and could really outplay his deal since he will be on a good team, but he has not been worth 6 mill the past two years... And he knew there were no long term big money deals on the table for him in UFA.

I would trade anybody on the Leafs' defense for Carlo on that contract in an instant.

The Hall contract is also only 4 years and his offensive numbers haven't been bad at all given what he's been subjected to play with in recent years.

To each their own, but Carlo is drastically overrated.

Why is Calgary feeling so bad about losing Giordano? My goodness, they didn't need to expose him...it was almost a slam dunk that Seattle was taking him.

Hall hasnt played more than 65 games in a season since 2017

That maybe true but if any player has a chance of coming back is him. He still has the wheels and still has some size
His hands haven't fully gone

I think as long as he's a secondary player, he's fine. I would have loved him with the Leafs with that price point
I can definitely see him turning his career around

I think he's got value. I would have been fine adding him to the team at the tdl for example. And if the team had traded Marner he could have been an interesting addition in that "what if" scenarios

I'd say this contract is closer to being fair than a steal though. There's risk for the team given the term and his health

wait so does dubas get a pass for having to get out from inheriting terrible contract s signed by lou?

the leafs absolutely can sign Hyman for 5 mill. Heck they can even sign landy for 7 if they want to.

but why would anyone want to?

lou gave up a 5 million dollar player who has been way better than Hyman in the PO for free.

Gave up toews/leddy. 2 top 4 d on final 4 teams for nothing.

That is not good asset management.
He brought in an incredible coach.

that’s about it
