We may never know for sure but the way the borg talked about him it seemed apparent to me he was either getting kept long term or moved for a big upgrade. If we don't trade him for Rantanen or EP and no other big upgrade came available, then I highly doubt we would've let him walk for nothing or traded him for future scraps. Hence, "core piece."

Don't get me wrong, even if the trade winds up being a failure and we did give up Necas for pretty much nothing I still think this front office and current core will keep this team contending year in and year out pretty much indefinitely (at least until we see any hint otherwise, this year pre-Rants was probably the worst our roster will be for the next 3-5+ years is my guess). But I would consider that trade a failure if we can't keep Rants around.
I think they will make the effort to keep it competitive but lets be honest, the vast majority of our current core was drafted by someone else, and the fact that they were draft picks ( in most cases ) has allowed us to sign them for slightly below market value. Also RBA is the reason some of these guys stayed. Once he hangs it up we will need to find another reason for players to want to be here.

I view our current main core as being Aho, Slavin, Svech and Jarvis. So half were drafted by current borg. Yes technically Waddell was GM but Tulsky was very high up/involved, Dundon was involved then and still is and our scouts and other front office staff are still largely the same with Waddell gone so I consider Svech and Jarvis from the current borg. And Nikishin is extremely likely to very quickly prove to be a core piece for us, also drafted by current borg.

Some other key pieces right now that could maybe become core pieces if they improve/we keep them long term or could be considered core pieces right now include: Martinook, Staal, Blake, Rantanen, Kotkaniemi, Chatfield, Koochie, Orlov. All of those were either drafted by or acquired by current borg, except for Staal.

This roster has evolved a ton in the last few years and there really are very few remnants left from the pre-Dundon front office. In fact, the only players remaining from before Dundon are Aho, Slavin and Staal. So I think your premise is flawed at this point. Your point would've been true a few years ago but with Pesce, Turbo, Necas, etc. all gone now it doesn't really hold any more.

Svech was drafted by the previous regimes staff, not that it matters anymore but so was Drury.

I mean you can split hairs one way or another if you like but Rod, Dundon and Tulsky were definitely all involved in that pick. Not sure it really even matters considering Svech was a no brainer at 2 overall. And still, larger point still stands that our team this year is almost entirely guys acquired by the current regime.

I have a feeling Orlov goes back to Washington this off-season.
