I still think Laine winds up here on Aho's wing eventually, even if just briefly. Would've been down to nab him at 50% but certainly not on his full contract.

It may blow Rod's brain to some degree but I think we gotta roll with a kid in the top 6. Nadeau or FUS.

edit: or Blake, but I think he's less NHL ready than the other two options

I would have been willing to take a chance under the right circumstances but this clearly wouldn't have worked.

Yeah, this trade arrangement was definitely ownership's request, which is a similar factor behind why the Tanev to EDM trade for Ceci+1st didn't go through. When a club is losing, usually ownership is not willing to take on salary for assets to the same degree as us fans may wish, unless the owner is deep-pocketed.

If Fast can't go, then I see FUS as he replacement this season.

I would say decent swing and maybe a hit by MTL but I also seem to recall they've got Gallagher and Anderson on bad contracts. Laine with no retention adds to that.

Potential cap crunch headed their way. Obviously the only solution is in 2027 to OS Demidov :sarcasm:

That hope should have been gone already. The worry now should be why it’s been weirdly quiet on the Jarvis front.
During the Team Preview call with Boomer, Tulsky said that they weren't driven by a defined deadline such as with Necas and arbitration. He stressed that Jarvy wants to be a Cane for life but there are details to iron out.

They seem to stretch out these situations or they could be saving the announcement for when they'll get the most bang for their marketing and engagement bucks.

It seems like Columbus's ownership wanted a trade that would completely dump Laine's cap hit. I'm sure that Laine would've had some trade value if their organization was willing to retain 50%, but because ownership didn't want to do that, teams like ours stayed far away, their hands were tied, and they had to dump a 2nd to make the contract go away. Tough situation for Waddell and the new FO, but this was likely their only real choice.
I understand the hesitancy to retain, but what does Columbus plan to do with almost $14M in cap space right now? Edmonton no longer needs someone to help them with their offer sheet situation that I can see.

What player is out there with an overpriced contract for Columbus to acquire? Patrik Laine?? PLD??

Columbus has to be in that "internal budget" phase at the moment. This reeks of Karmanos.

The right circumstances in this case would have been KK with Columbus adding based on this return lol
Would taking Kotkaniemi back and keeping the 2nd (just a straight deal, no picks) really be a worse return for Columbus?

I stated this before and I will say it again: if the Canes can successfully lock Jarvis in for the full 8 years, I will call this a successful offseason. I can handle a partial season of top-6 Martinook or top-6 Roslovic if our most recent core piece is locked for the max term, because an extra couple of million in cap space in 2026 of having Jarvis 8 year-ed then vs. 8 year-ed today has huge implications for us being able to lock in more future core guys like Nikishin over the coming seasons without a cap crunch.

Is Don THAT pissed off at Dundon? And would Jarvis sign a $9.16M offer sheet (max AAV for 1st, 2nd, 3rd compensation) and risk having to play in Columbus with what's left there?

Edit: Columbus doesn't have their 2nd in 2025 after this deal, so that offer sheet isn't coming. They could do a $6.87M offer sheet for a 1st and 3rd compensation, but why? Unless it's a 4 year $6.87M AAV to walk Jarvis right up to UFA I don't see the point.

And even then, it's more about screwing Carolina than actually getting Jarvis; no way Carolina declines that contract.

it was really more a bad joke, but i do wonder if dw thinks about an offer sheet for someone. without their 2nd, i guess they're a bit limited, but maybe there's someone of interest?

plenty of rfa's, and at least some of them may see columbus as an opportunity for increased pt. dammit, i'm going to end up talking myself into looking at rfa's for the next hour, aren't i?

Robertson in Toronto is the first one who comes to mind. That's a PT play they could do for a 3rd round pick ($2.29M AAV.)

Guess we can officially kiss all hope of getting anyone else to put the puck in the net this offseason goodbye.

Top 6 Martinook all season. f*** me.
I mean that's just who we are

We had the perfect guy and talked ourselves out of giving him market value because we were worried about the value on the last couple years of an 8 year deal. The way we are run, we will never sign the kind of players who will reliably put the puck in the net unless they are fundamentally flawed in their game to the point where the rest of the league is looking elsewhere. Even if we trade for one, we won't resign them.

But you better believe we'll stockpile defensemen every chance we get.

The Canes did give market value on an 8 year contract, apparently. Guentzel wanted to go to Tampa. It happens. They moved on and got a 3rd rounder back before he walked. I'm not saying the FO is infallible by any means; I'm just saying that it always takes 2 to tango. There will be plenty more opportunities out there to upgrade the top-6. There are always a couple of big names on bad teams who request trades. There will be several veteran names in UFA this year who may end up more willing to sign for higher dollar and shorter term to join a contender.

Reminder that we apparently had a deal with Guentzel all squared away, but "there were details to iron out."

I'm sure Jarvis does want to be a Cane. I just worry this front office will be unwilling to give him what he deserves.

I mean how many of these GMs are going to still be in their current positions by the time San Jose is good again? Is Grier even going to be in his by that point? (I'd say probably not) Playing nice with someone only works as long as they're still in a place to pay back the favor at some point.

The ones Grier trades with will be the most likely to keep their jobs lol
