A 4th liner with the potential to be more. So, basically, the equivalent of a 3rd round pick? I'll take that for free, sure.
Then when he doesn’t work out you’re stuck with him for another season.

More importantly a claim of him means our cap is gone.

Either way, someone a lot farther down the waiver list claims him.

In this video that includes the aftermath, remarkably Brown Jacket Guy repeatedly engaged in the fight right in front of a cop who had already talked to him, and yet was somehow not arrested even though that same cop just stood there while all the others found someone to arrest.

By all appearances, that guy could have just left the section by another exit and gone home, despite being one of the main participants.

I took a quick peek on the Phylers board and someone said it was a family matter. Didn't look into it more than that, though.
Yep, family matter that he had to fly back home to deal with. Team didn't give an update beyond that, but made it clear he wasn't a healthy scratch last night.

Kase isn't a bad player, just not a healthy player.

I agree. The Canes need people who can spend more time on the ice than on IR. Kase hasn't added anything to this team unfortunately and it was a gamble but maybe too much of a coin flip considering his history.

Part of the point was people had trepidation about Tolvanen's 1.45 m cap hit which slightly less than Kase's when healthy. I don't think he makes it very far down the waiver list anyway to make it matter.

That said I don't know what our scouts think of him or his potential. Either way I doubt Rod is looking for a project even on the old slow unproductive 4th line so we're more likely to try and find a solid vet for a 3rd near the TDL with that cap.

Good article on goalie use, contract challenges etc.

Why NHL teams are finding two goalies are better than one
This kinda feels like a "no shit, Sherlock" moment too...that's like saying "having two 50 goal-scorers is better than one." It's incredibly difficult in a cap world to make things like that happen though. You either need one making big $$ and a breakout ELC, or get lucky with 2 undervalued assets (i.e. Mrazek/McBackup, Anderson/Raanta)

They made it clear that he WAS a healthy scratch for the 1st game though.

I want Eeli Tolvanen.
He almost made it to us. Seattle claimed him. TBL and Dallas were the only 2 teams between Seattle and Carolina in the standings % (which is what I assume it's based off of).

Not saying we would have claimed him, but he made it further than I expected, and I'm usually of the mindset that most of these guys won't get claimed when a lot of people say "He'll surely get claimed".

Or play a system that minimizes the impact of your goaltending. The Canes haven't been lucky with their goalie combos; they've chosen a style of play that allows them to get better results with less talent in goal. This team made Nedeljkovic look like an NHL starter, and secured the only EBUG win in NHL history.

It's fine, Seattle is kinda the perfect team to take him at the end of the day.

I wonder if Kochetkov's weird contract was to boost his trade value to Brandon Hagel levels, trade him for 2 1sts in the offseason, then watch his sv% drop to .890 bc of whatever internal analytic magic Tulsky has. :sarcasm:

I think this is what’s actually happening, and Ryan Clark misread the tea leaves when he wrote the article.

Doubtful, because one thing that has great value in the cap world is a platoon-caliber goalie on a long-term $2M AAV contract.

I think we already have evidence Kochetkov is a platoon-caliber goalie. Reaching the true #1 goalie tier would only further benefit the team the next 4 years.

Tolvanen (1) doesn’t play a premium position (C/D) and (2) doesn’t play a premium style (i.e. power forward). If the league doesn’t see the high end skill, he’s a Middle 6 offensive winger and those are in abundance hockey wide.

Fans are surprised he made that far. Nashville is surprised he got claimed. I side with the Preds on this one, because of his contract.

I'm not surprised that Seattle was the club, though, that placed the claim in. Seattle's had a good offense to start this season but a lot of it is built on free agency rather than youth being built from within. Seattle likely sees an opportunity here to groom their own young player with some flashes of skill that have actually already been seen in the NHL, at least a little bit.

Not really around the league, but I read that Jagr had to lace them up for the Czech team he owns because of illness to many of the players. At 50 and not playing in years, he goes out, plays 15 min. and gets 2 assists in the loss.

I believe that also prevents him from being entered into the HHOF for another 3 years(?)
