I guess "likely a top 10 pick" and "arguably one of the best" mean two different things to me.

I think Texier is a damn fine player and an exciting player to watch, but saying a guy with 19 points in 44 NHL games is "arguably one of the best players (to date) from the 2017 draft" is a stretch. For me, "to date" means what you have achieved so far and while he looks good and has a lot of promise, he really hasn't achieved anything so far. He may end up being worth of a top 10 pick though (or higher) down the road, just he hasn't accomplished it to date.

To me, the "ten best players to date in the 2017 draft" out of over 200 picks...yeah, that's called one of the best.

1) but his production hasn't been one of the "ten best" to date. That's my point.
2) We aren't talking "over 200 picks". Typically, the best players come from the first round with a smattering that fill in from later rounds.

Anyway, to each his own. I was confused because he has only 19 NHL points in 44 games so saying he is "one of the best" right now is stretch to me. I realize he could change that very quickly though.

I've been watching Texier a lot this year, and his possession game has been amazing to watch develop over these past few games. The recent rise in point production IMO is no fluke.

That's fine. I never said he wasn't playing well now nor that he's not projected to be better going forward.

I guess my point was that 5 years from now when bloggers are doing a "re-draft", Tex will be one of those guys that begs the question "Why wasn't he taken sooner?" or "What did Jarmo see in him that everyone else didn't?"
That’s fair saying he could be one of the best in the future, and even sooner than 5 years out. I wouldn’t have even questioned it if written that way. I only took exception to the statement that said “to date” he’s been one of the best. He’s got 44 games and 19 NHL points to date.

He’ll certainly get a great chance with PLD gone and has started out well.

Man I wasn't sure if Brandon Sutter was still playing but he has been a human highlight reel so far this season

It’s wild that that 09-10 first full season back after the Doug Weight hit (2nd season) is still the best statistical season he’s had in his career. 21+19=40 - most goals, most assists, and most points he’s ever had. In only 72 games!

If memory serves, he played with Whitney quite a bit that year, and it’s easy to put up points when you’ve got a guy doing this on your wing.

There's a poll on the main boards for the worst GM in the league right now. After over 400 votes, Waddell is one of only 2 GMs with 0 votes. Who'd a thunk that 3 years ago?

Worst GM in the league right now

LOL Kevyn Adams in like the Top 5 as far as "worst GMs" is concerned.

I mean I get if you don't think he's Steve Yzerman but what has he done so far besides get Taylor Hall and Eric Staal?

I don't know how to evaluate GM's... but I don't think that'd make you the worst.. Signing horrible contracts would but AFAIK he hasn't yet.

He has the least experience is my guess. I find it hard to consider anyone on that lis an objectively “bad” GM. The guy actively damaging his franchise the most has 3 cup rings so it’s a little tough.

For me, it's simple. It's results oriented. If a team has cup wins or a long track record of success, then a GM has done a good job. That doesn't mean the GM hasn't made bad moves along the way, as every GM has made some bad moves so I like to distinguish individual moves vs. overall success.

Sure, there's some luck involved as well, but success is the ultimate arbiter IMO.

As AD said, Kevyn Adams has had no chance to yet prove if he's good or bad, so having him top 5 seems kind of silly. JR being so high is kind of funny as well. He was brought in with 1 purpose. Win ad many cups as possible while Crosby, Letang and Malkin can still function; and to hell with the future. That's what he's done. Yeah, it sucks going forward, but he wasn't brought in to think about life after Crosby.

Oh how I was dreaming of McDavid in a Canes sweater that year when our squad went winless in October. And then of course right around mid-February they started winning a bunch of meaningless games because that's what we do. But at least they didn't tank, they just legit were not very good outside of Cam and Eric.

That era prompted me to use this as my tag line on the other board:

" an up-and-down team that has had its moments despite the fact that it's probably not very good. Unless it is. Which it's not. We think."

The best thing that Waddell did when he got here was to not mess with the incumbent development/analytics side that Francis had cultivated, mainly by holding onto Yorke and Tulsky for dear life and promoting them up the chain instead of installing his own people due to ego/"new regime"-itis. He's always been a very good cap manager and never handed out crippling albatrosses in Atlanta, but he ALWAYS lacked an ability to put a competent scouting department together on his own. Those two help him tremendously to let him focus on the fiscal and contractual side.
