Surprise surprise. The guy who looked better than every single one of our prospects 3 years ago in the Preseason ends up being a Good Player.
He’s a perfect example of a prospect where you just need to believe your own eyes. He always looked good. It’s funny looking back, kid looks so promising and they just send him down and throw him into a trade for a rental soon after.

I really liked Bjugstad for the record it just sucks seeing a guy blossom when he’d fit perfectly on our roster

I’m not
Management should be embarrassed by the handling of their best prospects
Good for Broberg, who I wanted to keep, and Holloway for putting our management into clown suits and having egg on their face at the moment

I mean like when does Oilers management not have egg on their face, lol. This franchise can't hire a competent front office. Team has had some success in spite of that anyway.

Oilers Draftee watch
Jones 2 GP 0-0-0 -1
Puljujarvi: 5 GP 1-3-4 0
Desharnais 3GP 0-0-0 -1
Yamamoto 1 GP 0-0-0 +1
McLeod 7GP 3-1-4 +4
Kesselring 6GP 1-2-3 +6
Broberg 6GP 1-5-6 +6
Blumel 1GP 0-0-0 0
Holloway 6GP 1-1-2 +2

I personally never thought we should of matched the offer sheets but this doesn’t feel good. Kesselring and Broberg in particular.

Between the organization and the leadership core I do wonder if the vast majority of prospects would do as well here though. Which is another issue entirely.

4 first round picks in there. This is a story of poor draft/development but also the hollowing out of a critically lean prospect pool of precious few bluechip assets. The issue is not necessarily the loss but the return (lack of) garnered for them.

Still at least one significant roster hole at 2RD and more assets will be required to address this longstanding hole. Gonna have to thread the needle on a tough position that carries a premium in this league. Big bet on cap space.

The Oilers have absolutely abysmal asset management. If it wasn't for Jordan Eberle that Chris Pronger trade would've been even worse than it already was and we still ended up with nothing for a HoF defenseman at the end of the day. We also have nothing to show for Hall, MPS, Yakupov, the list goes on.

Kesselring is nasty. Nasty goal in OT for Utah, 2 goals, 2 assissts in 6 games.
Him and Broberg would make an amazing 2nd pairing on the Oilers right now.

6 games in and Broberg is already killing it, last years deep run did wonders for his confidence. We really let a great player get away for a mid 2nd round pick..

I'm afraid Wanner will be the next one out.

Yeah I agree, but they are going to burn out about mid season.
I don't know. The Yotes were a pretty solid team last year outside that brutal skid when all the relocation stuff came out.

Sergachev is playing like a legit #1D and they added a bunch of youth that are killing it.

I don't think I'd bet against them sneaking into the playoffs.

Don’t get me wrong I would love to see Utah in the playoffs. Personally besides maybe Buffalo ending their drought I don’t think there would be a better story but as the season drags on and injuries start to take grip I just envision a slip up. Although you are 100% right, they are in good shape based on the early sample so far.

A major inflection point was the Klefbum shoulder and Larsson parental tragedy in Edmonton. The team had a solid maturing top four d-corp that aligned with the super elites peak performance years only to have this critical position area smoked. Ekholm and Bouchard's growth have been critical but still hunting a very difficult and expensive hole to fill with 2RD on a championship aspirational team with journeyman right side defense group after Bouchard.

This management group has got work to do. Never a dull moment or the easy route it seems for the Oilers. Thank goodness for a projected annualized growth in cap... however that boost this summer likely caught them sleeping on their two NHL ready bluechip guys who left town for opportunity.

This summer's plan pivoted on August 12. The reactive contingency plan is a big leap of faith with more quality NHL ready youth out the door and more assets unknown to burn up filling top four right defense which carries a scarcity premium across the league.

I think I might have cursed the team when I joked about Lars Eller competing with McDavid for the Art Ross.

Eller+Puljujarvi have as many points as McDrai right now lol.

Pulju did some good things today but a penalty he took helped the Jets get back in the game (it was a delayed penalty and they scored their first goal when the extra man came on for Comrie).

This team's decisions and development with their players and prospects leaves you just shaking your head. It's really difficult sometimes to root for (not the team) but organization. Who we have in charge now is equally discouraging. God help us.

Except the new management has identified development as a problem hence the new hires. It’s going to take some time to determine if their decisions righted the ship in that regard.
