Bettman retiring cannot happen soon enough.

My biggest fear is that he handpicks a successor and the league sees no need to overhaul its direction in any way shape or form.

That’s pretty much a given. The owners are thrilled with him, they would clone him if they could.

Most fans overestimate how much he drives the direction of the game, he primarily works with the high level league stuff(Expansions, National TV contracts, CBA negotiations, salary cap, league administration, ownership collaboration etc). Even things like the southern US expansion that he gets so much flak for is something that predates his tenure, and one of his main mandates when he was hired was to properly execute mass expansion into southern US markets, a long held ownership/BOG level goal.

Most of the on ice stuff that everyone complains about, especially in the context of on ice rules and procedures are governed by the GMs(which is comprised of a decent number of living fossils who are notoriously resistant to change), the player's committee(which have very different ideas of what they want on the ice compared to fans), and the BOG(who knows what they want for the game, but I have heard stories about owners calling up the head office to complain every time their team gets a bad call against behind the scenes ).

I'm probably arguing against mob on this one, it's human nature to blame the guy perceived to be in charge . I'll always have a bit of a soft spot for Bettman as an Oilers fan though. If it wasn't for him convincing the rest of the owners to accept a committee Oilers ownership group in the late 90s, or setting up the NHL assistance plan in the early 2000s, NHL hockey wouldn't have made it to the 2005 lockout and the salary cap era in Edmonton.

I was a long time Bettman supporter for the same reasons you outline.

Rules, officiating, and DoPS are all horrifically broken under his watch to the point it's becoming a black eye on the sport, and for that alone it's time for change.

Some comment about dmen. I think Zach Werenski is probably the most under-rated dman these days, and in my mind, gets my early vote for the Norris. He's always been borderline great on a so-so team, but he's really elevated his game this year. Fanastic wrist shot. And I'll also say that Lane Hutson for the Habs will someday be in competition with Hughes for a top dman. Same body type, and skill type.

Are you sure you're not Jason Gregor? he's been pushing for this narrative for a while now haha.

Agreed, and to the bolded, same punchable face as well

Calgary might even make the playoffs
Having Wolf be this good is kind of like a catch 22 for Calgary... it's great for them that they found what looks to be an elite young goaltender... but him being this good has prevented them from being a bottom team and getting a top draft pick as well. If he continues to be this good going forward.. the Flames will continue to be just a middle of the pack team for years. It'll be like the Kiprusoff years... but minus a franchise player like Iginla.

Going to just continue beating the dead horse that is the Vancouver Cucks and say that "Petey" might be the absolute worst contract in the league. 11.6 sheets per for a guy that is too sad to play hockey? f***ing embarrassment of a player and a horrible horrible contract.

Something like 55 points/his last 82 games? lol what a brutal ROI on that gross deal

Absolutely love to see it.

and a massive and hearty f*** YOU to all the Cucks lurkers on here. Lol your team is a joke.

Gonna be pretty hilarious if Calgary makes playoffs and the Canucks miss. In fact I'm actually kind of rooting for it which something I never thought I'd see myself saying. Probably because Vancouver fans are so obnoxious and the Flames are irrelevant even if they make the big dance.
