There’s no goalie in the NHL worth that kind of risk. Even when the elite old guard of goalies were still present it was still risky then. But at this point it’s nice to see the Bruins finally make a big f*** up by locking up some random bum for that kind of a contract. Seems like the bruins have gotten lucky with avoiding big bad contracts. At least they have theirs now.

They've been handing out 6, 7, 8 year contracts to guys in their late 20's for years now.

The Bruins have the 1 Cup, forever ago. They've been close since, but we know close isn't good enough. You either win or you don't. The Bruins are good, but they don't win. They're not rebuilding to actually win, so the guys that go/stay there now want to get paid if they're not going to win.

Shesterkin turns 29 in a few months BTW.

That means he'll be 30 in the first year of his next contract.

I think Ranger fans should be happy he rejected the offer.
If he’s rejected that, you’d have to think it’s not just a financial decision. I can’t see a contender paying a goaltender close to that and why would a building team do so. So I guess I’m asking, does this mean he wants out of NY?

He's just got all the leverage. The Rangers aren't going to trade him, unless they suck this year. He's going to get paid, unless he sucks this year. Since neither of those is likely, why sign now? Draisaitl just got $14m, but most in signing bonuses, and a good chunk up front. Not the same position, but we don't know the details of the contract. Is it base salary or signing bonus? Is it more front loaded, or more equal along all 8 years?

If you're NYR, I think you just let him walk at the end of the season.

You won't get much for him in a trade IMO, and you're trying to contend this season.

Goalie market finallly got reset imo

Ullmark and Swayman deals are good benchmarks

What Shesterkin was offered is less by % of cap than...was it Bob or Vas? So it's still not technically the highest goalie contract ever. But pretty sure that's what he's pushing for and he has the record to back it up. Goalies typically age well, their primes are more 27-37 where skaters are more typically 23-33 (asspull #s, approximate)

On paper, they're an expansion team that had the expansion fee waived, and they bought Phoenix's roster for essentially the same amount of money. That's totally different.
Utah is a unique situation. The Coyotes were basically deactivated and the roster moved to the new club. But I don't think Utah keeps all the team records.

Montembeault stole that game tonight, wow. That has to be the best game he will ever play in his career.

I'm still bullish on the Leafs this season, but sometimes it seems that teams have a dark cloud hanging over them, and that seems to be the case with the Leafs a lot of nights.

The Habs have a good amount of youngish talent on their roster, but as far as the big picture with their rebuild, I think the 2023 draft is going to be a sour spot. They were one spot off from securing one of the elite centers, and then probably were to conservative in not getting Michkov at 5. Time will tell, but Michkov's talent level is undeniable.

And I hate watching Vegas because I just can't get over the fact that a player like Jack Eichel was available for trade at age 25, and the team with the highest rated farm system in the NHL did not pull the trigger, and instead he ended up in the division to torment us. About to turn 28, he was a goldilocks aged unicorn, he would have been a perfect player who was good enough at time to be a factor with 11 and 8, and young enough to still be a factor with Byfield and players around his age.

I think it will ultimately go down as Blake's 2nd biggest mistake, especially when you consider that they were still in desperate need of a C in that age range and we all know which direction they went after that (the mistake that wasn't the 2nd biggest)

Does Vancouver have the biggest d-core in NHL history?

Myers - 6'8
Desharnais - 6'7
Soucy - 6'5
Forbort 6'4
Hronek 6'0
Hughes 5'10

They don't move very well, and its showed in this game.

Maybe they might need a bigger goalie, up 4-1 now losing 5-4 to the Flames. LOL. The night just keeps getting better. Now if we can just get the Avalanche to pull a miracle it might just be a perfect night of hockey.

Being happy at the time that they didn’t give up assets for Eichel thinking that they were staying the course and committing to the rebuild only to ultimately find out that Blake only passed on Eichel so he could immediately sign Danault for more term and blow his load on Dubois was such a punch to the gut.

You know what makes it worse though

Is for all the time some of us were like "yeah this is the wrong move, don't get a 25 year old center"

They skipped Eichel and went ALL IN ON PLD
