Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

we just saw two teams out-choke the leafs in b2b nights

avs choke a 2-0 lead in the third, giving it up to rantanen who torches them with a hatty, and drury (one piece in the rantanen deal) takes the penalty that ends the series

blues choke a 3-1 lead with 2 minutes left and give up the gtg with 1.6 seconds left. they had the score on their side, the puck was in the corner, and then they lost every 50/50 battle and lo and behold they are golfing

the leafs gotta hand these two medals for outchoking us

I started watching two minutes into overtime and thought the Jets looked like the much better team.

Nik Ehlers post game interview was unexpected. Usually hockey players just say cliches but he kept it very real.

Watched the highlights and it's crazy he decided to make that pass across with 4 seconds on the clock. Just nerves of steel. If that didn't work out he would get tons of hate for not just shooting.

Jets lost 6 straight elimination games and hadn't made it to the 2nd round since 2021 even though on paper they have been serious Stanley Cup contenders for years now. You'd think they would have multiple conference final and Cup finals runs if not a cup by now. They are very similar to the Leafs in the sense they keep choking it away while being even more deadly on paper. For some reason their best regular season goalie in the world can't continue to be that in the post season. His play this series wasn't inspiring to change that notion.

Still, I rank them the best Canadian team just keeping it real but they have their work cut out for them against Dallas.

excuses, that team was god awful everyone considers that series a travesty. Then to follow it up getting swept by the jets is pathetic. mind you missing the playoffs in your prime like those two did a couple of times in the weakest division in hockey is also pathetic.

also mcdavid did not produce every game in that series he got worked over at 5 on 5 and got some pity PP points. in the NHL I'm told winning is all that matters, going nuclear and then turning into a pumpkin in the biggest game of your career is chokerish to me.

McKinnon continued under delivering until Makar showed up on the scene; he has 1 game 7 goal in his career and is 0-6 or something in game 7s not sure why no one ever harps on that.
Only excuses that get made are for our core. You reach this much to try and make ours look good when they actually get further than the 1st round carrying trash teams. That Chicago team was awful you say and was a travesty until you see that Oilers roster. Kane, Toews, Debrincat, Strome, Saad and Kubalik or McDavid, Draisatl, Nuge, Kassian, Yamamoto and Neal. Which top 6 do you take? That Winnipeg series they just got goalied. Right? That's how it works? He still got his points and was a PPG player. Unless we aren't gonna care about that stuff anymore? Y'all wouldn't do that though then you wouldn't be able to defend our top guys anymore. Ages 20-21 is their prime now?

He did. Was a 6 game series and he got 10 points with 6 being on the PP. Even had 1 shorthanded goal too. I didn't think producing on the PP was a bad thing though, especially doing it consistently. Guess what though, he still made it out the 1st round and was still a PPG in the 2nd round. Yeah he choked though.

Mackinnon under delivered until Makar showed up? The guy who got 10 points in 7 games his rookie season in the playoffs and then 6 in 6 his last playoff appearance before Makar joined the next season. Crazy that he just got better when a good player joined the team. Imagine if they all had the luxury of having Tavares and Nylander on their 2nd line. Just because our core was blessed with having 2 other very good players on another line doesn't mean others did as well.

While it's not been the most entertaining first round, you gotta give it to the stores.

- Rantanen showing Mack who the real G is in the best individual performance since Messier in 1994. Cale Makar will be patched in over Zoom when his Wi-Fi is finished getting set up.
- 'The Kings totally have this!', they did not totally have it.
- Florida bitchslapping their cross-state rivals.
- The Battle of Ontario...went about as expected.
- OV shows he still has it.
- And now this - after Hellebuyck does everything to make sure they don't lose their tee time, somehow the Jets make it past the Blues in 2OT, Pionk and Perfetti arrive at a party with a keg and a big bag of killer weed just in time.

Round 2 I have:

Panthers in 6 (sorry guys...)
Canes in 7
Knights in 7
Stars in 5

And the Wilds are worse than us in terms of 1st round playoffs exits.

Tbf they've won 2 first rounds since 2013 (now the same as the Leafs) and they're not in the final 5 years of their core that on paper should have been good enough to do better than they have like the Leafs.

Canes did asked for MM in a potential trade for Rantanen. If MM said yes, who knows where Rantanen would be playing now
He was never never going to sign in Carolina.
Any trade was going to be where he wanted to sign.
The reason why Rantanen was traded.

I watched both the Dallas and Winnipeg games back to back nights and I saw some amazing hockey

If you didn’t see the jets game last night it was insane. The speed of the game was noticeable right away. It made the leafs/sens games look slow

The Leafs Sens series made the Canes and Devils look good

Pionk was a beast! He played almost 50 mins!!!! Just think about that…. He played almost a whole damn game. Winnipeg played 5 d-men for pretty much the whole game. What a comeback. Got a feeling though they are going to get ambushed by Dallas in game 1. They are going to be on fumes

Luke Schenn was amazing too. Just a solid dependable guy. Throwing hits and moving the puck up the ice quickly with crisp passes
