Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

I hope San Jose wins the draft lottery tonight.
They could have something really good brewing there if they could add say Matt Schaefer.

I started watching two minutes into overtime and thought the Jets looked like the much better team.

Nik Ehlers post game interview was unexpected. Usually hockey players just say cliches but he kept it very real.

Watched the highlights and it's crazy he decided to make that pass across with 4 seconds on the clock. Just nerves of steel. If that didn't work out he would get tons of hate for not just shooting.

Jets lost 6 straight elimination games and hadn't made it to the 2nd round since 2021 even though on paper they have been serious Stanley Cup contenders for years now. You'd think they would have multiple conference final and Cup finals runs if not a cup by now. They are very similar to the Leafs in the sense they keep choking it away while being even more deadly on paper. For some reason their best regular season goalie in the world can't continue to be that in the post season. His play this series wasn't inspiring to change that notion.

Still, I rank them the best Canadian team just keeping it real but they have their work cut out for them against Dallas.

I thought the Jets looked nervous, and it took some time for Hellebuyck to relax into hs game.

Jets started overtime with their heads up their butts, some of the dumb decisionis they were making, but Hellebuyck had found his game and held them in it.

Like watching good games where the outcome doesn't link back to '67.

How about Boston?

No Boston, Pittsburgh or Rangers. Rest I don't have an issue with, though San Jose or Columbus would be most preferred.

Nah he brought a knife to a gun fight. There shouldn't have been a game 7. Good for the Blues, they can build on this. And good for the Jets if Helly is out of his fog again.
Kudos to the Blues. They left everything on the ice, Got f***ed by lady luck.

The trade fell through because Marner wouldn't waive his NTC.
That was the final attempt. Canes were willing to take something else (I believe it was Easton Cowan and a first, plus a roster player), but Rantanen's agent said he wouldn't sign after being traded, so the Leafs pivoted to Marner for Rantanen because that was the only trade that would make sense (rental for rental).

That never happened.

Sources: Hurricanes asked for Maple Leafs' Marner in Rantanen deal

The Hurricanes initially asked for Mitch Marner in return for Rantanen. Because it was for Rantanen, the Maple Leafs had to consider it. They told the winger their desire is to sign him, but they had to ask in this case. As is his right, Marner declined to move, re-iterating his desire to stay.

I must have started watching when they cleaned up their act. Let's see if hellebuyck and find his form against Dallas. Very interesting team, the Jets.

Only excuses that get made are for our core. You reach this much to try and make ours look good when they actually get further than the 1st round carrying trash teams. That Chicago team was awful you say and was a travesty until you see that Oilers roster. Kane, Toews, Debrincat, Strome, Saad and Kubalik or McDavid, Draisatl, Nuge, Kassian, Yamamoto and Neal. Which top 6 do you take? That Winnipeg series they just got goalied. Right? That's how it works? He still got his points and was a PPG player. Unless we aren't gonna care about that stuff anymore? Y'all wouldn't do that though then you wouldn't be able to defend our top guys anymore. Ages 20-21 is their prime now?

He did. Was a 6 game series and he got 10 points with 6 being on the PP. Even had 1 shorthanded goal too. I didn't think producing on the PP was a bad thing though, especially doing it consistently. Guess what though, he still made it out the 1st round and was still a PPG in the 2nd round. Yeah he choked though.

Mackinnon under delivered until Makar showed up? The guy who got 10 points in 7 games his rookie season in the playoffs and then 6 in 6 his last playoff appearance before Makar joined the next season. Crazy that he just got better when a good player joined the team. Imagine if they all had the luxury of having Tavares and Nylander on their 2nd line. Just because our core was blessed with having 2 other very good players on another line doesn't mean others did as well.
I didn't mention our core once. I actually looked at it from a vacuum.

MacKinnon won a cup thanks to makar's conne smythe performance and Rantanen. Please do tell me more about 0-6 in game 7s MacKinnon who finally scored his first career game 7 playoff goal in an epic choke game. why didn't mention mackinnons playoff appearances between his rookie season and the season where get got 6 in 6?

as for your oilers question I am taking super duper star 1 and super duper star 2 McDavid and Draisatl over whatever garbage Chicago (weakest team in that year's playoffs) put out. That Chicago team was 38-30-8 they were objectively ass. Saad was washed up, who the hell is Kubalik? toes was like 2 seasons away from ending up in India. How would you take that top 6 over one with Leon and Mcdavid?

it's ok to call out other people's failures when they're objectively bad failures even if you have bad failures on your own team

- Avs didn't win with MacKinnon for several years
- Avs then won when Makar joined the team and played well.

Therefore MacKinnon should get no credit and still be seen as a choker even though he was an instrumental part of that cup run.

That's like saying Ovi shouldn't get credit for a cup because they didn't win until Kuznetsov joined.

MacKinnon has been ABOVE ppg in every single post season , save for two.. where he was ppg. Idc what his game 7 stats are that's a playoff performer.

To phrase it how you did to give no credit to MacKinnon for that cup comes across as dekes/zeke levels of cope

Islanders win the lottery. I can live with that.
Yeah the stuff with them has died out by now tbh. Way rather then than Boston or Pittsburgh.

Do they take the local kid that grew up an Isles fan that isn't the best player in the draft in Hagens? Do they take Schaefer? Do they take Misa? Does SJ, who very likely wants Schaefer badly, pony up something to move up a pick to get him? Lots of intrigue.

How amazing was that Monahan trade for Montreal.

Get the 16th pick this year for taking him.

Got the first round pick last year from Win for moving him. Still have a 4th in 2027.

Plus Monahan had a great year and Calgary probably makes the playoffs if he was still there.

Disaster for Cal. Incredible for Mon
