Around the League - 2024-2025 Part II

It definitely helps, no argument there.

But sometimes it doesn't matter. Vegas and Tampa both won cups with rosters that were well over the cap.
Exceptional Cap Management there ... using every loophole in the CBA.

Leafs have laid the groundwork for a Matthews to LTIR scenario.
Not sure they have the assets to land a top player though, so they'll likely just play him and pick up some scrubs at the deadline.

Apparently Ranta was willing to take less? Lol

Easy thing to say now. He had since July 1, 2024 to take less if he really wanted to. Dude and his agent misread the situation, came in asking for Draisaitl money when Mikko is 3rd on the pecking order. MacKinnon, Makar, Landeskog took less. Sounds like even suggesting 14m turned the organization off.

Maybe his discount was not enough for Sakic but might be enough for Carolina. I would not sign Marner until I see what Ranta gets from the Canes.
The Canes are notoriously cheap. I can't make heads or tails from that trade.

When Rantanen said he was willing to take a "discount" to stay in Colorado, I'm guessing Rantanen's agent convinced him he could get like 15 mil on the open market, so 14 mil is a "discount".

Why did the leafs give Marner (Rantanen's closest comparable) so much more money, AS WELL AS a nmc? Why couldn't Ranta's agent negotiate a nmc 6 years ago? Leafs GM's suck.

It makes me SO HAPPY to see some GM's stand up to these spoiled brats. Rantanen was in super fun and cool Colorado. He played hardball. Now he's stuck in the Red Neck Carolina's. A sign was sent to the entire rest of the players "You are NOT more important than the team". I wish certain other GM's were willing to make such statements...

14M is aiming high to start negotiation, while Colorado lowballed him a bit at 11.75M. It goes both ways

I really think the Makar contract also is what made them go with that number

Whatever rantanen got, would’ve been the floor for Makar. So let’s say they might in the middle at 12.9, the Avs couldnt with a serious face start his contract negotiation at under 13. Makar would probably get like 15 in that situation and they probably thought they couldn’t ice the best team possible in that situation.

They wanted rantanen to take the lowball offer, maybe 12M to help with the Makar contraxt

I hope he's UFA in the summer.

Being able to bid on a Top 5 playoffs producer in free agency?

My advise would have been to ask for a trade to Toronto where it does not matter if you are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the pecking order and whether you have won anything. If you want playoff success, sign with the Canes for less money.

According to Friedman, Sakic was willing to make him the highest paid winger in the league which is $11.5m. Ranta wanted to be the highest paid player in the league but would have probably settled for MacKinnon money but even that was too rich for Sakic. I hope the morons at the cash box are taking notes.

Love to know how much Sakic would offer Mr. Assists. Guessing, not much more than he milked from the Leafs 6 years ago.

P.S. What would it take to turn off the Leafs? I would have moved Nylander and Marner after they were signed as RFAs. Not many teams enjoy being taken to the woodshed. Shanny seems to have no problem with it. Getting suspended in the playoffs is a different story. Do that and you immediately get shipped out of town.

Quinn Hughes.

Looks like captain material.

Whenever I watch Mitch Marner hang around the blueline and go fancy foot work, I occasionally wonder if he wouldn't be happier playing the modern point guard role on defense that Quinn Hughes plays. He would have to ratchet up the puck retrieval part of his game and have that jump to turn up ice from his own goal line, and defend from a defense position, and have a point shot threat, but offensively, I see a few stylistic tendencies which would suit Marner. Not advocating for it but he wouldn't have to go to the net...

So knowing 'Canes are tight with their money, unless it is a revenge offersheet, do Leafs hold off on marner until they know how much Rantanen gets / or goes UFA in the summer?

Or do we spend big on Marner and let Tavares walk entirely to go Rantanen hunting?

'Canes did win the Cup in 2006.

Maybe Rantanen can help get them another.

I dunno, I think one has to keep an eye out on what the big picture is, and that's winning the Stanley Cup, not fiscal conservativism and hard line managing for the sake of it.

I'm not happy with the way the salaries have ballooned in Toronto, and definitely pissed that our core has squandered a lot of their careers with underperforming in the playoffs. More financial discipline from the Leafs over the years would have helped things.

But you also have to recognize the Avs won a cup with their Mackinnon, Makar, Rantanen triumvirate and were dead in the water and completely dysfunctional until at least 2017, so I wouldn't have cut bait on a key figure in such a special winning recipe. As an Avs fan, I would be pissed off, and not celebrating that Joe Sakic chose to be a hardo company man on this one. But they also have a cup and can ride off into the sunset mission accomplished already, so the stakes are totally different.

I think the shot might be an issue.

It'll be pretty funny if Makar still has sky high contract demands. Trading Rantanen is no guarantee that others will modify what they want.

I'd wager he's going to become the highest paid player in the league regardless of what line in the sand the team wants to draw

Not sure what the number will be but he absolutely deserves more than Rantanen.

Nothing ensures failure like stubbornly sticking to irrational convictions.

COL offered to make him the best paid winger in the league, which he arguably is. But the guy wanted to be the best paid player in the league, which is outright delusional. Not even a top 2 player on his own team. Total misread of the situation, should lose his agent.

It's not as if the Avs are running away with the Presidents Trophy here, they have been spinning their wheels this season with Rantanen, retaining the player at 14m doesn't guarantee anything other than Makar coming off the top rope at 16m, it's all relative. Tough decision, but in their mind they've extended their window, secured themselves a legit 1st liner in Necas for half the price, allowing them to fill out the rest of the roster. I applaud management taking control of the situation, Rantanen could've played them like a fiddle and walked himself to Free Agency to the highest bidder.
