Every time the Leafs get “goalied” in a series, it’s important to also take a look at what’s happening in front of them. In the case of CBJ, Montreal, Florida I saw a lot of big blue liners who retreated to defend the slot with physicality, contesting rebounds, blocking shots while conceding the perimeter for cycling.
I saw a transition game from all three teams that were opportunistic in the neutral zone, and could turn north aggressively. Carolina does the same thing.
Big body length defenders who can park a bus in the slot, block shots and contend rebounds, dumping the puck out of the zone, staying in structure in the neutral zone and waiting for counter rushes seems to elevate goalies.
Florida is also extremely sloppy relative to the other teams but recover on second and third effort. But sometimes when you’re hot you’re hot.
