With all these athletes catching the virus as of late . I think they should just cancel the season and maybe even next season too. This thing is not going away. Come out now and just announce it. Crazy times.

Won't be Vegas and Vancouver...would keep the all-important (coddled) East coasters up too late...would miss out on their beauty sleep
Without fans attending games they can play the Eastern Conference playoff games in the afternoon, 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm. In fact, they may need to go earlier on the first game of the day in case there is OT.

I seriously doubt the players and owners are too keen on that idea. There is going to be professional sports played this fall and next year. The players are not in a high-risk category. The only question is how it will be done.

I think they are going to play the round robin games early, given those will have regular season rules.

According to the TSN article

The NHL says they've tested more than 200 players multiple times since training facilities began opening earlier this month.

So that is only about 5% since 6/8 but that number will grow as the month continues and more players are interacting, let alone contact.
And not just players, some of the staff in TAmpa Bay were positive as well.
I never thought this was a good idea and still don't. Esp with the CDC theorizing a second wave of COVID could hit late Aug thru Dec.
They won't cancel, but they should I think.

Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews tests positive for COVID-19

With this news as well as TB in a previous post, I don’t think we’re anywhere close to moving for the next phase of getting the playoffs started. At this point, they might as well have an E-playoffs for 2020.
No one should have believed there would be zero positive results when tests were given to players who previously had never been tested. If the NHL and NHLPA didn't have a plan for this happening, then maybe they don't have the intelligence necessary to pull off the "bubble" plan.

I guarantee you this, just as many players, and perhaps more, will contract COVID-19 if the NHL doesn't resume play. These guys aren't staying isolated in their own homes during the time they haven't been playing. The only difference will be those who are asymptomatic will never be tested, and we won't hear about it in the news.

While I agree with your comments, I still feel this plan doesn’t make sense, especially since there’s no proven treatment for the virus. Current treatment seems like “hope it doesn’t get worse” and if it does - then “hope the ventilator works”.
So, now Matthews will be on lockdown until he comes up negative? This would have been a real mess if this happened during the upcoming playoffs. Sit him for weeks? The playoffs probably will be over by then.

Something like this is where a lot of other industries have a force majeure clause in contracts.

I'm sure the PA and the NHL have talked about some sort of contingency for players who don't want to play. With reports of long term lung damage etc, i'd be willing to take a suspension without pay for now if that's what it took.

As far as shut the whole thing down...I'm ambivalent. But I also thought they had a lot more control over the players' 'bubbles' than this. I know we aren't in that phase yet, but it will also make an interesting case study--i mean, if we can't avoid the virus with literal lockdowns and testing every day, they've got a lot of future considerations.

Stupid response by the NHL to have a first phase that is so open. Either you go full bubble or nothing from the beginning. That means full lock down of the hotels and stadium including hotel and stadium staff, once your in and tested thats it no more outside contact. Players stay in the hotel and are bused to and from the stadium and thats their life until they are eliminated. Any other system where they can have any sort of outside contact will just end in failure.

Yes, that is correct Matthews will be in quarantine now until he tests negative. That's how it works for everyone else, so that's how it should work for him.

This isn't going to be a "clean" playoffs if the players don't stay in the "bubble", or the "bubble" is pierced by someone else. If that's what people are looking for, then cancel the season. No revenue for the NHL, including the players who will receive a salary commensurate with 50% of the HRR revenue from last season.

I don't know exactly what the plan is for the NHL to have the playoffs, but it would seem to need the following elements:

1. All players enter the "bubble" now.

2. Starting now, every player and those in contact with them get tested frequently, if not every day.

3. After a period of time longer than two weeks when everyone in the "bubble" tests negative, then you start the playoffs.

This isn't going to work if the players and the staff don't maintain the "bubble".

Again, we may never have a vaccine, or it may be years away. The world can't afford to stop indefinitely for COVID-19. The NHL is not essential. If the NHL and NHLPA isn't smart enough to come up with a plan, and the discipline to execute it, then don't play and forego the revenue. The players should not expect to be paid for games they never played. The rest of the world will move on, return to some semblance of "normal" where our economy survives, and the NHL can wait for a vaccine.

Just tell the players if they don’t maintain their bubbles and contract COVID they will forfeit their remaining salaries and any opportunity to get their name on the cup This year, even if their team wins. That would pretty much guarantee compliance. It won’t happen, but there you go.

Article about Mathews & COVID:
Ed Willes: The story behind the story about Auston Matthews’ positive test is bewildering

From the article: “The news comes as the NHL tested 200 players resulting in 11 positives.“

That’s over 5% infection rate. Note a good start for player testing. Hope this isn’t an indication of future results. For a team of 40 players (regular players, black aces, others), we’re talking about 2 players a team.

Teams will need to quickly get all their players tested and quarantined if needed before the training camps begin.

While I hope I’m wrong, just don’t see how they get the league back playing.

Crazy story period

As far as bubble scenario I'd be willing to lock myself down to play hockey for 3 months as long as there is plenty of beer and food provided. Hell that's almost how it is when we travel to a tournament.
