Around the League 2019-20 Pt. 2

I wonder what has them all bent out of shape? They can play their way up to #1, maybe Boston and them can avoid each other before the conference finals.

Killorn is their rep and spouted some bullshit about the teams lower in the bracket are playing high-intensity games and they're not, so the lower seeded teams get to ramp up.

In other words, PTSD

WRT Coronavirus and the league, I think they get to impose a much more controlled environment then just about anyone. Could test twice a day even. There's much less threat to them than the general public despite their contact because of this I would think, but it will also be an interesting case study in people with some exposure vs. people with no exposure, antibodies, etc.

Trying not to get too OT in this thread of course since we already have an existing CV-19 thread.

So never? No vaccine has ever been created in below 4 yrs for anything.... How much money, hours of research, and years now have been put into cancer, HIV, etc with the results that decades later they are still top causes for death in this world. Somethings that helps or better ways to move forward should come. If expecting a vaccine or things to go back to normal anytime soon or in the next year or two good luck. Will provide plenty of time to read up on history and the unlikelihood of a vaccine actually ever being produced for Corona.
Yes, my point exactly. Sorry, my sarcasm wasn't more obvious.

It would seem to me there are a wide variety of options between returning to play in 4 months, and never. I could be wrong though...

I've been waiting for this to get out, as some of you know, I have a "source".

It would be smart. None of the California teams qualify, plus there are two NHL arenas and one AHL arena all within an hour of each other.

If the players are concerned about returning in June or July, better cancel next season then as well. In fact, cancel all hockey and professional sports until a vaccine is developed, tested and proven to be completely effective and safe.

Does being concerned mean you have to cancel the season?? Or can you be concerned and play like most Americans that are going about their everyday lives?

Would it though? Staples is probably going to host 2 NBA playoff series at the same time, not sure how this wouldn’t conflict. Do we know if the ice at Staples/Ponda are still there?

The NBA Playoffs are going to be in Orlando, or possibly Vegas, so that's a non-issue. I can tell you that the ice was removed at Staples Center probably 6 weeks ago, but putting it back in would be no problem, as they have nothing going on.

My question for those who advocate delaying the restart of the season beyond June or July until some future date, or canceling this season and returning to start a new season sometime in October through December, what will change between now and then to make the situation better and more palatable for you?

The NHL franchises have contractual commitments to sponsors to play a minimum number of games in a season. Failing to do so this season will result in a big drop in revenue for the owners and players. This is why the NHL and NBA want to finish their seasons. I fail to see the large risk in allowing players in their twenties and thirties to play games in empty arenas. All of the people involved should take proper precautions and people most at risk should not be around the players, or anyone with whom the players are coming in contact.

If you are not willing to see the NHL resume play in June or July, then why would you not want to see next season suspended until a vaccine which is proven safe and effective is developed? Without a vaccine what will appreciable change between now and some time in the future where you believe it is acceptable to resume professional sports?

To play devil’s advocate, why are we claiming that advertising revenue is more important than human life? If, as a result of restarting the season, a player, coach, staff, or family member dies, will you say it was still worth it?

If I was a player, I wouldn't go anywhere near a person at high risk. The "money is worth more than human life" narrative is a crock. The players are not in danger of losing their lives, and if they are going to play then they have to be committed to frequent testing and not having any contact with high risk individuals. Sort of like all of us should be doing now since over 50% of the deaths are in nursing homes and probably 80% to 90% of the deaths are among those over 70 years of age, or people with several health issues.

Also, you didn't respond to the basic question. If not now, when and under what conditions?

How can you say that? The virus is a gamble. Different people react differently. It could also fook up your lung capacity.

Saying or implying no risk is a joke.

Provide links to data showing people under 40 are at risk of losing their lives. You can't. I have read and understand the data and the demographics of those we are losing. That's how I can say that.

Please answer the question. If not now, when? Under what conditions?

But we already play this game. We choose to drive, even though it kills thousands of Californians every year. We believe, as a group, that the overall good that driving brings is worth all those human lives.
We also choose to eat like pigs and not exercise even though millions of people die from obesity every year.
People die everyday for a variety of reasons, but we don't stop living because we might die.
That's not to say we shouldn't be careful or take extra caution.
But if the numbers CDC released the other day were to be believed, the risk of a healthy individual under the age of 65 dying from the coronavirus is minuscule.
It's fine to say you can't put a price on life because the idea itself is true. But in reality, we do that everyday.

Advertising revenue is tied to people's salaries. Not only the players who make millions, but players who make the minimum, players that are trying to make it to the NHL, coaches, and staff that maybe won't be earning anything if these games aren't played.
If we were just looking at millionaire players and billionaire owners, yeah these games probably don't need to be played right now.
But the answer isn't so easy when everything else is taken into account.

Answer this question:
When did the NHL have to cancel it’s season not related to a lockout?

Bonus question:
How much were owners and players making at that time?
