Doe Dubas understand this isn't the NBA, and you actually need more than four great players on the roster?

Bold move by Toronto to be sure, but I don't think it is the right way to go about building a contending roster.

CapFriendly has the Leafs total cap hit calculated at $94,865,199, with LTIR used at $13,365,199.

I am not a math genius, but I don't suck at math, and with the NHL salary cap being $81.5M that is just north of $13M in cap space he must clear out. It looks like Dubas is about to get bent over in any deals he makes with other GMs to get under the cap. I hope Blake has Dubas on speed dial.

Maybe I am forgetting how the LTIR contracts are counted against the cap prior to the season starting.

The bigger problem imo isn't just the contracts, it's that they're ALL to forwards on a team that has defensive issues, including two wingers.

That cap hit of $94+ million is off an active 23 man roster and 4 guys on LTIR.

As I understand it, $10,550,000 of that $13,365,199 is covered by Horton and Clarkson's season long LTIR. Another $3,113,333 is from Hyman and Dermott starting the season on LTIR. So once Hyman and Dermott get healthy, 4 guys will be sent to the AHL.

That $3 million or so from those 4 and Horton and Clarkson should get them complaint. Barely. 21 man roster. o_O They had better hope no one gets hurt.

I think Leafs vs TBL will be fun to watch, especially with Marner signed and if Point holds out for awhile.

Time will tell, probably this season, whether Dubas is an idiot or genius. But I’m willing to give the leafs the benefit of the doubt because I think they have improved their defense enough and they have some skilled dmen ready to become full time players very soon.

I think the biggest questions for TO is their goal tending and head coach.

Toronto is being foolish if they think they are going to get by with a 21-player roster.

How so? Gardiner/Barrie and Ceci/Zaitsev seem to be lateral at best defensively and I think Kerfoot is going to be a much worse defensive center than Kadri was. I do think Hutchison will be better than Sparks, but I don't see a big improvement defensively from that squad.

In hindsight Jokinen was nothing like the player he was projected to be and Palffy was the first get out of your seat player the Kings had since Wayne was traded. I think it worked out well for both.

You're right, but Jokinen was still a good-great player for seven or eight seasons from about 24-32 or so, he just took a bit longer to develop. But had he been in LA for those early 2000s runs, maybe his development is accelerated a bit. He's not a great first line center, but he's probably better than Mike Cammalleri.

In a vacuum, I would rather have him on the team than not in the mid-2000s.

i could have sworn toronto fans said that marner, matthews, and nylander were all going to sign team-friendly deals so the gang could win a decade of cups together, and that our dumb dumb gms signed guys to player-friendly deals because of their tiny brains
Well, in the Kings case it player-friendly deals were a terrible idea.

Well, let's see what Tampa Bay does with Point. Just because Dubas is sh*tting the bed doesn't mean BriseBois has to F up his roster.

Why Lightning aren't swayed by market with bridge offer for...

When Killorn was asked about whether teammates were worried about Point’s contract impasse, he brought up how “we’re pretty fortunate knowing Pointer’s personality, knowing the way he is. He’s a very ‘team guy.’ I know he wants to be here.'”

And that “team-first” culture, created during the Steve Yzerman era, includes both on the ice and at the negotiating table, as captain Steven Stamkos explained last year.

“Part of the culture that we have here in Tampa is kind of that team-first mentality, and if you want to keep a good team together, guys are going to have to make little sacrifices along the way,” Stamkos said. “Whether that’s in terms of money or term or ice time or role on the team.

“That was something that — it’s kind of non-negotiable on this team, in terms of doing whatever it takes to help us keep the core together and keep being a productive team. That message was pretty loud and clear early when Steve got here and established himself as a GM, and continued to be that way.”

I think Kadri is a good 2C and Kerfoot a near replacement 3C, but better suited for that role if given limited minutes.

Barrie’s a slight upgrade on Gardiner and doesn’t have the health issue history. Ceci is fine as a 5/6 D, assuming Dermott and Sandin get more minutes.

It will be interesting to see how their defense comes together. As if all the hockey world wasn't already Toronto focused, I have a feeling there will be even more scrutiny on how they perform. I personally don't think they improved much defensively, unless Sandin/Lil really have breakout rookie seasons.

I’ll take Nylander. Too bad we have no one the Leafs want.

More like the Kings don't have anyone that people here would want to see them trade for Nylander. Blake has assets, they're just all 21 and under. No, they won't get Nylander for Martinez, or Toffoli, or whoever else, but if you want to give them Kupari, or Turcotte, or a combo of a couple higher end guys, the Leafs would listen. They have cap issues next year, defense issues, so if you offer ELC talent, they'll at least chat about it.

I don't think Nylander is worth nearly what they'll likely ask for, he's getting a big-market boost.

Getting 60 points riding shotgun to one of the most talented centers in the game on the highest-octane offense in the league outside of TBL translates to like 4 points on the Kings.

McAvoy, in two seasons, has played 63 and 54 games respectively, scoring 32 and 28 points in those two seasons.

That’s about Alec Martinez/Jake Muzzin level scoring.
