I think JT is going to go to a team that is already a legit competitor.
One could argue with tavares we would be a legit contender. We could pair him with the league MVP and still have cap room for improvement.

Three years for a 35+ Kovalchuk is borderline wacky...but hey finally got their man eight years later.
Damn I wish we would of gotten in for Hanifin and Lindholm instead of Calgary.
Severson, Johansson, Walsh would of been a package that matches Calgary.
He'll produce at a high level IF he's healthy. I'm skeptical his body holds up.3 years @ 6.25 avg is a good gamble on Kovy for LA

Who is because all I have heard is LA SJ and Toronto. Has anyone got a real list from a good source. Actually that’s not even his list that’s just he teams people have been taking about. The guys at the draft table brought up a good point, the cores in LA and SJ are older. JT would have his window in the next couple years with those teams. He implied he thought JT might look for a younger team who’s window might start in a season or two to maximize his chances, then he mentioned Toronto.
Has ANYONE officially been linked to JT? I think it's all been speculation so far.
how is toronto in the mix with having to pay matthews, marner and nylander soon enough?
im out of the loop
Tavares, just like every elite UFA to potentially hit the market, will resign with his team.
Except for our guys thanks lou
My dream scenario is Tavares wanting to join Tampa. They would then have too many centers and need to clear salary. Point has one year left before a big contract and they wouldn't be able to afford him. Attaching Point to Callahan and Coburn would clear a ton of space. We could then buyout Coburn and then deal with Callahan on the 4th line/PK for a year or two. Tampa is loaded for a cup run and we have our long term 2C behind Nico.
Even despite the point totals, I don’t think most fans realize how good Braden Point was last year. I don’t think Tampa would be trading Point, even with getting out of 2 of their worst contracts.

I'd take Johnson and eat Callahan's remaining 2 years. Montreal's got enough cap space to consider the same too. That's why it's a dream scenario. Tyler Johnson would be tough to trade unless Montreal gets all weird again in their need for centers and unrealistic view of where they are.
Especially with Lou going there, hiring Trotz, and looking good at the draft.Tavares, just like every elite UFA to potentially hit the market, will resign with his team.
A lot of that is luck - the draft picks falling and Trotz leaving just as they were the only team without a coach. They were pretty much no-brainers. Him getting JT back and acquiring a viable goalie will really show if he's lost his touch or not.Everything has gone right for Lou thus far, he seems to have regained his golden touch that he lost with us and TML.
