I ask myself though and I'm sure Lombardi does too, if what if he did NOT make the Richards' trade but did make the Carter move.
Of course Simmonds is the MVP - just to rub salt into that wound.
Simmonds is MVP of All-Star Game and probably the #1 power forward in the league right now - def passed up Lucic, Kane and his pal Chris Stewart years ago.
Martin Jones is the #1 goalie and took Sharks to finals.
Klefbom is a #2 D on the Oilers backend.
How many more picks and players does Lombardi need to spread out around the league?
As would I, but you can't make the assumption that trading him is the reason we got two cups. The Kings were likely going to miss the playoffs after the trade. The team was worse, not better. It took other major changes to get the team over the hump.
We have no idea if Sutter would even play Simmonds on the PP and that's the only place he's effective.
That trade didn't cost the Kings any Cups though. They won in 2012, reached the Conference Finals in 2013 and won another Cup in 2014. What have the Flyers achieved?
And again I reiterate the fact that Stoll would have been the #2 center behind Kopitar by default had they not made that trade. Richards wasn't a slouch in his first couple of seasons here. Sucks what happened to him in the end, but he played critical minutes and played a factor in that run in 2012.
Simmonds would look great on Kopitar's wing right now, but those two Cup banners look even better.
Who cares about two cups? The reality is that Mike Richards had to be bought out, and Simmonds is now an All Star MVP. With Simmonds, we may have had an opportunity to win more than two cups. I will take those theoretical cups all day every day.

what?? you'd throw away two cups just to have a chance at possibly winning more than 2 cups, even though there'd be no guarantee that you win even one? how does does this logic come anywhere close to making sense?
thats like blowing 100k on lotto tickets and saying 'well, i could theoretically win the lotto"
it doesnt make any ****ing sense dude

What's the difference? And this doesn't include Quick, who was lights out and the defense of a prime Scuderi, Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, Greene and Mitchell.
A lot of what if's in this thread
Might as well add:
what if we picked Tarasenko
What if Voynov was a good boy
What if we landed Kovalchuk
What if we traded Quick and kept Jones
What if DL bought out Richards at the right time
What if Carter only came here because his BFF was here
What if Shore didn't have naked pictures of Sutter
What is Simmer stayed and was a 15 goal scorer in our tight system
I am just glad I got to watch the Kings win the Cup and the feelings I got both times it happened. I wouldn't gamble anything to hive those feelings away. This team has a lot of work today, especially the front office. Keep in mind this team has been without Kopitar, Toffoli, Gabby and Quick for extended periods this year and we are still in it.
Forbert, Gravel and Dowd have played well and should be solid blocks for the future and we still have all our picks for this draft.
Our key defense is locked up long term as are our two key centers and goaltender. Our farm may not be as good as some but it's not without talent, especially on the backend.
We will lose a player for sure in the draft but again "what if" it actually helps i.e.) Brown
I enjoy everyone's separate views and no one being a ***** while debating it but in the end we have not one but two cups and the emotions that went with winning them. We are a spoiled franchise
Sounds like the Islanders are without a home again haha
