The Toews and Kane deals are the basis for every contract following those two. The Toews contract is definitely an issue for the Hawks.
The new CBA is reason for contracts having a high cap hit.

Toews and Kane signed right after the new CBA, which made it so you couldn't lower cap hits by tacking on low salary years at the end of a deal.

I don't see how the CBA is responsible for the contracts. The CBA didn't write those ridiculous deals. Many GMs failed to adjust.

Rumor also that the GM's wanted Five year max contracts (like the NFL/NBA) Players wanted 10 years, they settled on eight.

The new rules about how deals can be structured is the reason contracts have higher cap hits that are more reflective of the actual salary players are being paid.

Toews and Kane just coincidentally happened to be up for new deals at the time the new CBA was implemented. You may not agree with the deals, but contracts were going to start having higher cap hits regardless. That's the whole point of the new rules.

It's a good thing. Cheating the cap is harder now.

I agree the cap hits were going to be somewhat higher. They cap hits are still too high, and the contract lengths are way too high.

Huge hit by Kucharov on Vatanen. I liked it but blind side and possible head contact.

The way they called the Doughty hit, this should be a suspension.

Remember the often used excuse for the Kings having played too much hockey when they failed to reach the playoffs in 2015? Someone explain the flavor of the month, Pittsburgh Penguins, for me.

Looks like that excuse doesn’t apply to them.

With the Doughty and now Morrisey things, we've established that hockey plays gone wrong are suspensions, I agree.

Should have just waited and taken a shot to the head behind the play, non-hockey play headshots are clear.

The don't play in the west. The physical brand of hockey is night and day compared to the softer brand of hockey they played against.

I think you have to add in travel as well. That takes a toll when you are going cross country and hitting a bunch of different time zones during the year on multiple occasions.

Travel in the East is less difficult to be sure.

The Cup Hangover is a real thing. That's why there's a term for it.

The Penguins had the 10th best record in the league. And came fairly close to missing the playoffs (4 points).

They never left the eastern time zone except for the SCF I believe in two seasons.

They never played a WCF two years in a row? Are you sure about that?

I believe when asked about travel, it may have been Sutter who said it’s not that big of an issue these days because of how “pampered” players are these days. They’re driven to practices and arenas, they fly on charters, their meals are prepped, they have team trainers working on them around the clock, they have access to everything.

I also think the physicality of East vs. West is greatly exaggerated and it’s more of a team thing. Plenty of the Eastern series I’ve been watching have gotten physical and chippy. Just look at how often fans complain about the dirty Bruins or how the Penguins get away with murder. The Devils/Lightning game earlier was also very physical.

Crosby & Malkin. That’s your explanation. As much as I love Kopitar, he’s not that good.

Talking about he Pens.

Remember the meat grinder the 13' and 14' playoffs were for the Kings? Triple digit hits in all 3 series. The Pens never had to face that in back to back years over 3 straight series .

Unpopular opinion, you should be able to hit goalies who play the puck outside the crease. Logically it's garbage that they can get involved in the play, but you can't hit them .

If you play like a player you should be able to get hit like a player.

Really? Well it's always made no sense to me how goalies can play outside their position and can't get nailed for doing so.

Every time I see a goalie play the puck behind the net I hope he gets nailed.

Martin Jones is having a great game thus far in San Jose tonight. Very calm, no wasted movement. Playing it just the way a goalie with his size and style should do it.

The Kings goalie development team is likely the best in the NHL.
