I don't want to bash McDavid. The extreme gaga-ness over him gets old but I can't really blame Oilers fans, they need something to keep them going.

I do find the superstar thing interesting. Maybe it is a result of becoming a fan in 89 and seeing it first hand. I fell in love with hockey and the Kings. I still look back with almost reverent awe to that time period. It doesn't add up to the two cups but it is pretty damn close.

Even tho Gretz and Mario were the best, Yzerman and others were also around. I don't think I could see those players past my blinders tho.

Ha, I've been stopped at the Canadian border twice, once was also crossing over from Windsor, second time was at the airport. I guess they don't like us Californians. We took Gretzky from them, they probably think we're going to import another Canadian star to SoCal.

yeah well american border agents searched my whole car cause i was going to minnesota for hockey tournament.

I was told by everybody that getting back into the US would take longer. But it only took a couple minutes for the US Border Agent to determine I was just a sports nerd.

When I checked the news later that day, I spotted this news story:

A Windsor man is facing smuggling charges in Canada and the United States after he was found with 51 turtles strapped to his body trying to enter Canada through the Detroit-Windsor tunnel in early August.

Originally I thought it happened on the same day I went, but he was indicted on the same day after being caught a month earlier.

But still, I like to think that the Canadian border guy was looking at me and thinking "Asian guy. Rental car. Traveling alone. Does he look like a turtle smuggler?"

maybe its easier for americans crossing home. but every problem ive had was going to us. coming back to canada no problems.

My old college roommate moved up to Seattle for grad school awhile back. I went up to visit and we drove to Vancouver to catch a Canucks/Sharks preseason game. Drove back and the US border patrol asked us to pull over. To my surprise, they had actually flagged him as a person of interest rather than me. As it turned out, he has a fairly generic name so they just wanted to verify he wasn't a drug dealer from Florida.

Coming back from Windsor, it was almost like I was shooting the breeze with the US agent. After I initially explained going over just to watch the McDavid game, I think our conversation went something like:

"Sir, where are you staying?"
"At my friend's in Ann Arbor."
"Are you catching the Michigan [football] game tomorrow?"
"I'm thinking about it. I could probably only stay for the first half since there's another hockey game I want to watch tomorrow night. Michigan tickets are cheap though since they're so awful this year."
"Yeah. Have a nice evening." (waves me through)
