Sharks look like its their year it sickens me .

Benning first trades Shinkaruk for Granlund. And now McCann + 33rd pick for Gudbranson. Unbelievable.

Shinkaruk is putting up impressive numbers in the AHL since he got there and is only 21. He also looked good in his short stint in the NHL. McCann was a very underrated prospect who looks destined to becoming a solid reliable center who will give his all. I wish the Kings were in on this.

Florida now has Barkov, Trocheck, Bjugstad, McCann. Id think McCann takes over as 3C for the Panthers and maybe Bjugstad could be had for a trade. He did get passed by Trocheck this year and McCann would flourish as a 3C .

From the NHL PUblic Relations

SHarks are the first team to advance to the SCF after missing the playoffs the year before since the 2011/12 Devils, both teams achieved that feat under a coach in his first season with that club, Pete DeBoer.

Pretty impressive to do it twice...

I hate Shinkaruk and I still think the Canucks got hosed.

I wonder what d-man shakes out in Vancouver with them getting Gudbranson. I still have to think Hamhuis is part of their plans this year.

Well considering the fact that Hamhuis didnt get moved as a pending UFA and the rumors about him wanting to stay id say he resigns. I can see Sbisa being moved as he is just a bottom pairing dman.

Always interesting what if's out there. Just like all the draft talk I guess.

Had the playoff format been the 1-8 and division winners get the top seeds, the Blues and Sharks would've been a 1st round series. Kings would've played the Hawks. Figure the Stars beat the Wild again, and the Preds beat the Ducks, Chicago takes the Kings out, and SJ beats St.Louis, and the Kings still have questions, the Blues are still 1st round disappointments, Nashville plays Dallas without Seguin, and it could've been a SJ/Nas conference final.

Benning seems to have a poor concept of asset management, seems to feel the need to overpay with extra prospects and picks. Has to be frustrating if your a fan to see him shedding draft picks unnecessarily.

I think Hamhuis is done, can't see him taking a 1 yr deal and Gudbranson will be looking for 5M and north next summer. Canucks, from all accounts, are looking to go younger on the blueline and there's a chance Edler gets dangled as well. If they are rebuilding, they won't have him on their radar after this year when his contract is up and there will be a team interested, I think he'll go.

Everything has lined up for the Sharks this year. Shell of a Kings team. No Chicago. No Anaheim. Bleh.

You sound like the people who say the Kings run in 2012 was a farce.

Its not like the Sharks did not dominate these series, not sure how the Nashville series went as long as it did, Rinne standing on his head perhaps.

Do you think he is done as far as retiring or done with the cancuks. I still think there is some tread on the tires there.

Hamhuis-Doughty
Martinez-Muzzin
Gravel-Greene/Forbort
(scuderi waived)

looks ok to me

edit: I forgot about McNabb

Unnecessarily might be too subjective a word. I would guess he doesn't throw a pick in after everything has been agreed to like a tip. Good job with the trade discussions, it was a pleasure, here's a 3rd rounder for your time.

I don't think that's all what he was saying, as he was agreeing with me--and we're just saying everything is going right. That's what it takes to win a cup. Their stars are playing out of their mind, and they're deep and healthy. They wrecked their playoff nemesis--much like we whacked Van in 2012--beat an upstart Nashville team that just took out a cup favorite, and finally beat another team that was in a similar boat as them, and were very much in control in all three series so far. And on paper, they match up favorably vs. the Pens--who are defensively deficient--and TB, who is top-heavy but lacks the depth of the Sharks both offensively AND defensively (but could pose the biggest goalie test the Sharks have seen thus far).

I think he's toast, at least as a top-pairing option.

Plus, I don't fault the guy for having his family's best interests in mind, but I have little interest in a guy who would rather go down with a sinking ship than take a shot at a cup for a few months while helping the team he clearly intended to return to (unless he actually leaves this summer which would shock me).

has it been confirmed he refused to be dealt, or was it more their GM not dealing him and Vrbata for no friggin reason

I thought everyone just called Benning's bluff and didn't want to pay the insane prices he was asking.

I used to harbor some resentment towards Selanne. Allegedly the Devils had a deal in place at the 2003 deadline (Gomez+Tverdovsky for Selanne+Sturm+Ricci) but Teemu blocked it with his NTC. Some guys aren't wired to uproot themselves, even if only for a few months, for a shot at the Cup. Doesn't necessarily mean they don't have what it takes to win.

Hamhuis for better or worse wanted to go to a handful of teams (Dallas/Chicago if memory serves). So it wasn't like he didn't want to be dealt, he just didn't want to go to some other clubs.

I forget which TSN reporter it was, but the story that was relayed was that Dallas was the only team who had the assets/cap space. But Dallas was also in on Kris Russell. While most teams preferred Hamhuis between the two, Dallas preferred Russell possibly because it'd be a rent to own situation.

Dallas closed the deal on Russell and there wasn't a match for Hamhuis anywhere else. Dallas then made a late offer on Hamhuis, but that offer was highly diminished from what it had been earlier. I suppose you could make the argument that something is better than nothing, but if Benning dealt Hamhuis for like a 3rd round pick and a C prospect, we'd be railing on him for not getting enough.

I seem to recall that there wasn't much interest in Vrbata either.

Personally wouldn't be surprised if Florida left McCann in the AHL next season. He showed some promise, but it's not like he lit it up. I certainly wouldn't move Bjugstad and expect a 20 year old coming off a 9 goal season to replace him.

We started hearing stories about Shinkaruk right after the trade. Things along the lines that teams knew about his attitude issues which is why he fell to 24th in his draft year to begin with. Maybe you'd like them to get somebody better than Markus Granlund, but there might not have been much of a market for Shinkaruk.

We'll see if Gudbranson progresses and young D are expensive to acquire. I'm not quite ready to declare this to be JVR/Schenn part II quite yet.

I agree it is not time to call it that yet, but this could be worse. In relative terms would be JVR + for Schenn

We'll see if the draft pick turns out to be anything. Read a few folks who are very much down on the depth of this draft. Red Line says the talent drops off after 21/22. Craig Button lamented that the depth was awful during a radio interview.

33rd sounds sexy right now, but the depth might resemble something like 2006/07/12.

Hamhuis colored that a nice shade of gray in Feb when he was asked:

http://www.theprovince.com/sports/kuzma+hamhuis+trade+status+riddle+solved/11741818/story.html

“If you look at it from a pure hockey aspect — if I was chasing the money — leaving would be the best option to have the most exposure, if I was traded to a top-end team,†said the 33-year-old Hamhuis. “But there’s more to it than that in my decision. I look at it that it’s a great situation in Vancouver for me and for my family. I certainly would consider what that would do to the family, too.

“In some aspects, four months is a long time to be away (from family), but in the bigger picture, it could be a small amount of time. Either way, it would be a difficult situation and that’s a major factor.â

You are correct, I do recall that piece now. Add that to the exorbitant prices for d-men...

instead some or railing on Hamhuis for not wanting to play for a cup contender...if his GM doesn't deal him it's not on hamhuis IMO

If you re-read my post it's less about that and more about raw ability. That was just an addon that I admit was not recalling correctly.

I wouldn't want to sign him as a top pairing option. He's 33, had major injuries the last few years, and hasn't played 82 games in 4 seasons. He would also likely get overpaid. He's also charmin soft. So the problem there is cool, we'd get to roll Doughty-Muzzin, but Hamhuis/Martinez seems to be a pretty meh pairing. But I suppose Doughty-Hamhuis is better than everything else trotted out that's not Muzzin.

I don't particularly hate the guy and hey if DL signed him to a good deal that would be fine. I just get the feeling some see him as a savior of sorts and though I can't blame that thought after seeing Scuderi playing >20 min a game I don't think he's going to age particularly well. He's already showing major cracks. And he's gonna get a lot of money thrown at him.

I don't think he's done in the NHL but given the Canucks were trying to trade him, unless he takes a severe pay cut (which he might to stay there, given how he keeps hinting at that ) they might give him a short term deal
But if he decided to sign elsewhere, he would be okay in a supporing role given the right team/fit.
Defensemen are at a premium, he'll get offers.

An article with some glaring stats that illustrate panthers robbing the canucks

http://www.tsn.ca/panthers-take-advantage-of-canucks-in-lopsided-trade-1.496247

If you think about a 0 z-score as being directly comparable to the league average defender, Gudbranson doesn’t fare particularly well here. His two positives are very slight in nature, with his raw goals against per-60 and raw shots generated per-60 just being a cut above league norm.

More concerning are the number of other metrics that are well below league average. Take, for example, his relative shots against per-60 minutes. His z-score for this is -1.57, meaning about 94 per cent of defenders in the league are better at suppressing shots. This is strikingly problematic for a guy who is being billed as a shutdown defender, and not indicative of a player who is genuinely tough to manoeuvre around.
The other half of his game – just as important in this day and age – remains substandard. Offensively, Gudbranson is challenged, with shot-generation rates (both raw and team-relative) and scoring well below league averages.

Like I mentioned...Gudbranson is very McNabb-ish.

As for Hamhuis, he refused to waive the NMC to head East but was apparently favorable to Chicago or Dallas.

The two Eastern teams interested supposedly were Boston and Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh could be in the SCF shortly while Hamhuis is sitting at home still without a ring.

Nice that he doesn't want to move and has his family in mind, but we've got a Captain on this team that probably can't think about anything but family with the 14 kids he has. I want some young blood that only has two things in mind:

Playing as well as possible in order to get a good contract.
Winning the Cup.

Those are two goals that are definitely not mutually exclusive. That's why I'm excited about the seemingly inevitable influx of Reign players for next season. Current roster needs a bit of a kick in the butt as well that the youth can hopefully bring.
