Frozen Four tourney starts next weekend. Some interesting thoughts...
- Bentley University making its first ever appearance. While they were always the arch nemesis of my alma mater Bryant (both excellent business schools in New England), I have a friend who went there and since we went D1 the schools don't compete athletically anymore. So good for them.
- No Michigan anywhere to be seen. Men's team was first team out getting bumped by an AQ. Tooooo baaaad. Bla ha ha.
- Hockey East (6) and Big Ten (4) dominated college hockey this year.
- Should Miami of Ohio consider changing conferences? No program seems to have been hurt worse than Miami after the conference alignment. Have not had a winning record since 2014-2015 and averaged just six wins per season over the last six years and were 3-28-3 this year. With the breakup of the CCHA to make room for the Big Ten, Miami has become a doormat...a total joke in the NCHC. A move to the new CCHA playing the BGSUs of the hockey world could help make the competitive again. At what point does the NCHC boot them in favor of a more competitive program like St Thomas or MN State?
- Hats off to UConn and Maine, not easy establishing yourself in a conference that has BU, BC, UMass and Providence. Maine's goalie Boija has had an incredible season (23-7-7 with 1.76 GAA and .930 Save Percentage) and is UNDRAFTED!!! UConn might be building a super-competitive program. Their arena situation seems awkward, small on campus arena (brand new) so they play all their biggest home games 40 minutes away in Hartford at the pretty dated XL Center where the Whalers used to play (that's how old it is).
Oh and hey...let's not forget the local team. OSU came within a whisker of winning their first Big Ten championship last night losing in OT2. They are still headed to the Frozen Four tournament and could make some noise. - Women: OSU and Wisky face off this afternoon for the ladies championship for the third year in a row while Michigan keeps doing feasibility studies (SMH). This year's Wisky team is a juggernaut.
