haha, we already knew he was going to get in the neighborhood of 7 million before Bob got signed. Since we knew that before the deal, kind of hard to say that it makes the deal look any different does it?

Goal contracts are for **** right now. WTG ****ing GM's. You ****ers didn't learn **** from Luongo and Ricky boy and, later, with Price.

At least JK only went 3 years.

The Howard contract starts to look like a thing of genius at this point. He earned the money and the term is reasonable.

Major news and major issues for NJ. Not only did they screw up when they signed him and have to forfeit one of their 1st round picks between 2011 and 2014 but they chose not to excercise that right in 2012 after being a cup finalist. Now Kovy retires and it screws the Devils even more. they could be looking at a top 3 pick next year that will need to be forfeited. I thought they would struggle already. Losing Clarkson and Kovy hurts their offense pretty significantly.

This team could be pretty bad for a long time....

KHL is now a real threat to the NHL. Im really worried about drafting future Russians. At least we don't have to worry about Niki, Tyuts, Bob, or Anisimov.

I fully expect that the Devils will never end up forfeiting that pick. With Kovy leaving, Lou will petition Bettman to rescind the penalty and I'm positive he'll get his way in the end.

The question is whether the KHL can become profitable. At this point, the billionaires funding the league can pay Kovy $20mil or something ridiculous like that to leave the NHL, but once they keep handing out those types of salaries, what happens? Will fans care? Ultimately, without a lot of revenue coming in, the KHL won't be able to keep handing out ridiculous contracts.

The KHL is expanding into other countries, with Jokerit in Finland joining in 2014-5. That could fail miserably since Finns mainly care about Finnish teams, not other KHL teams. With NHL talent, maybe it's more successful and the KHL can expand to Sweden, Switzerland and Germany. So, it might not just be Russians impacted if KHL expansion through Europe is successful, and the next few years I could see tons of money thrown at players to try to make it successful.

Ultimately, I doubt it is since most of Europe is more interested in the NHL than the KHL or their local leagues. But if the KHL was full of well-known NHLers and star players? That may make the KHL far more appealing.

Why?

They still signed a cap circumventing contract, they got caught, they were assigned a punishment. Just because that contract no longer exists doesn't undo the original deed.

The police don't let you off your unpaid parking tickets just because your car got stolen.

This is Bettman and the NHL, not a court of law. I'm not saying it's right, but Lou will find a way to successfully appeal it.

Yeah you're probably right. Sometimes I let my naïveté get the better of me and I temporarily forget who is running this league.

I am not trying to be political here, but merely posting as to one of the reasons Kovy left for the KHL. This was from an interview with his mother.

Is it true his salary was delayed by the Devils? [ed.: The question is unclear as it may be interpreted a number of ways]

“Yes, it happened. Now, after the lockout, there are a lot of restrictions at all teams. They are also underpaid 20% [of their salary]. The League takes it as an escrow that may not be paid back if the NHL does not make profit. And then there’s government tax of 50%. That means on paper you are being paid $10 million a year, but in reality only 3. So the pendulum swung for Russia."

This could also influence a lot of Russian players, and in the future, maybe players from other countries.

I hate to say it I don't get the doom and gloom for the devils. Sure they won't be as good, but looking at their roster it reminds me a bit of what ours looked like at the start of last year with the exception that they know they've got good goaltending.

People are freaking out and they still have 12 forwards signed already with Henrique still RFA. Sure the top tier talent isn't there, but when did the Devils ever win with top tier talent other than a D man or two and Marty?

So the team won't be as good as a team that didn't make the playoffs and that isn't a recipe for doom and gloom?

I don't hate their roster, but it really doesn't remind me of ours.

While not 100% accurate from the mother, it's close enough to be a consideration. The US tax code is very punitive and it's only going to get worse especially when you start to consider state and local taxes. I guess the question is to the individual "How much money is enough?".

I have little doubt they will get back most or all of the 20% for starters.

eh, I counted last year's team for them as good enough to have been in the playoffs but for the collapse they had. I think with the Brodeur/Schneider platoon that solves a lot of what happened. They scoring collapse they had happened with Kovie and Clarkson as well so... can't be worse than not making the playoffs.
