I maintain with the idea that standing pat is probably the worst position to be in - especially with the current state of the team.
I mean, what good does that do to anything? It's not like all of a sudden THIS team will start to compete. We also already KNOW Brunette ain't leaning on the kids any more than he has before, so they'll get bottom-six minutes and limited usage. That doesn't help in the transition when eventually guys like ROR, Marchy and Stammer fade off into the sunset. Standing pat essentially just burns a year towards - yeah, I don't even know.
I get not being aggressive, but still, you have to admit that we're in a re-tool. Move some older guys to bring in some young - known - talent, not just lottery tickets. This old and slow team got you to 3rd worst record in the league - it cannot possibly go much worse.
Look at the Blues in -23. After being competitive in the playoffs in -22, they fell off in -23 and ended up moving core guys like ROR and Tarasenko (after already losing Pietrangelo to FA). They made some shrewd moves and got back into the playoffs this year where they were seconds away from being in the 2nd round.
Face the fact that the next season or two will bring pain. Move ROR, Marchessault and/or Stamkos, Sissons etc. Keep SOME vets like Forsberg. Draft the elusive 1C we've been after for forever. Go after some young, up-and-coming players as well as guys like Nic Hague who are solid DEFENSEmen with some track record, too. Play ZLH, Svechkov, Evangelista, Wood a lot to see what they truly have or don't have. Draft high again next year and get some more quality talent into the organization.
