Armchair GM Thread

I think 25 goals - if it's like a one-off peak - is nice, and possibly within reach for ZLH - but I'm not sure that qualifies him as a lifetime designate as a "top 6 forward", right? Like, Tanner Jeannot when he got 24?

I think ZLH might be capable of hitting 20-25 goals when the stars align for him. That's not the same as christening him as a de facto "top 6 F" though, since most of his year will probably be 12-17 goals.
I'd say, based on the numbers, averaging about 20bgoals a season makes one a "top 6" forward, even if that doesn't seem exciting enough. 15-20 is a middle 6er at worst.

Tanner jeannot is a former 20 goal scorer- When he is on his game, he is Middle 6...thats a good comp for you.
He is not and will not be middle 6 again. He happened to go on a blistering s% run and had his career year at a very opportune time. What we’ve seen since is the real Jeannot- 4th line agitator/fighter with a little bit of goal scoring ability. ZLH is a higher skill/higher potential player.

I agree, I think you misinterpreted my point

You can still be bottom 6/middle 6 and put up 20 goals

I would love it if we had a "top-9" such that you couldn't really distinguish whether the gritty winger with 20 goals was on your "2nd" or "3rd" line, because on any given night those line designations could flip and hence are meaningless. So I just hope ZLH becomes a solid "middle-6" forward for us, basically. Which I honestly think he will be.

He managed to stay in the lineup most of the time and not get completely benched or demoted despite still being waiver exempt. Most of our recent forward prospects would have been sent down. So even though he got deployed as a 4th-liner basically with low minutes and opportunity, at least they kept him mostly in the lineup. Which bodes well for how much the braintrust actually likes him. It might seem a little counter-intuitive that 4th-line/10mins a night actually represents the braintrust "liking" him. But compared to other guys who got sent to the pressbox or AHL, it really does.

I also think him leading the team in hits/60 (ahead of even Lauzon and Schenn) is something that is probably very highly valued by the braintrust, of course.

Stay with the theme trotz.

I don't think this lineup is at all realistic. Marchand will cost more like $8M, as will Tavares. Even Granlund might approach that number.

So we can't get all those guys.

Plus, the lineup needs more Jonathan Toews and a whole lot less of M. Wood. So much cereal there we really need to be in on that comeback.

I think the final answer is that ZLH is a Trotz type player. Agitator, hits, can play some D, can kill a little penalty, trusted, plays both ends(although haven’t seen much offense yet). He’s on the verge of being a Trotz buddy who gets a pseudo NTC. Forget those Goal/Assist thingys. This is tongue in cheek but think about it. Course I want him to have a breakout but school is really still out on that.

It would be nice if they were going to hang him out to dry for voicing his displeasure that they go ahead and do it now, while teams are interested in him and have abundant Cap space.

After July 1st, teams will have shopped elsewhere.

Assuming that Bruno is not going to suddenly turn anything around or change his approach in any way (if he was going to, I'd like to think we would have seen that at some point last season!), then Marchessault will probably just remain "disgruntled". But his scoring numbers or the market may be a lot more restrictive than now, thereby lowering his value.

• The Nashville Predators won’t be setting off July 1 fireworks after two consecutive years of adding big names. They want to let their roster settle. They might make a subtle signing or two, but nothing too flashy. The Predators have several players entering the last year of their deals (guys like Michael Bunting, Colton Sissons, Michael McCarron, Jeremy Lauzon) so if they don’t bounce back, they could sell at the March trade deadline, but otherwise it’s about keeping the path open for some of their top prospects.

Stop keeping the path open and put them on the ice for crying out loud. Keeping a path open is important only if you play the kids, otherwise, it's a waste of a path/space.

I’m curious if Anaheim would want Marchy
Also important is that March wants to go there.

From what I'm hearing the Trotz plan is to simply run it back this next season. No major changes at all. Continue to nibble around the edges only, which probably translates to waiving a few more young guys and bringing in more waiver wire filler.

In summary, we're apparently going all in after McKenna.

Yeah I don't see much happening unless someone strikes out in UFA and decides to make Trotz some crazy offers on guys and he just decides out of the blue because of that its a good time to just bite the bullet and redo everything.

The good thing is if he just runs it back I think it probably finally takes out Brunette, and we aren't going anywhere anyways with him as coach.

I actually think it might be the end of trotz as well. I'd tell him look your pencil and pen are terrible because your path and plan isn't working here. Giving him more time will only set this franchise back more

We discuss development paths of players here a ton.

But development paths of management and coaches matters to. Those are the key decision makers who set up the entire franchise for success or failure. And basically we have a GM and HC who had very little if any development and no cooking, let alone overcooking. They are both learning on the job. It shows.

I agree it is showing which was the reason I thought it was a mistake to hire trotz in the first place. Maybe an assistant gm first but poile had to make a move because he was feeling his seat start to warm up

I don't think much has changed on our outlook for next season? We effectively have 1 fwd slot open to sign a free agent (then juggle the lines below accordingly). But most of the rest of the roster spots are basically filled. Not that they couldn't be upgraded (significantly in some cases!), but it doesn't seem like doing so is really management's plan? :dunno:

Hopefully during the season we can gradually shed that whole 3rd line and Bunting and some of the warm bodies on D. Then start to fill in with younger players. But I don't see that happening to start the season, anyway? :dunno:

2025-26 Nashville Predators

Forsberg ($8.5M) - O'Reilly ($4.5M) - Evangelista (RFA ?$2M?)
Bunting ($4.5M) - Stamkos ($8M) - Marchessault ($5.5M)
Smith ($1M) - McCarron ($0.900M) - Sissons ($2.857M)
L'Heureux ($0.8633M) - Svechkov ($0.925M) - x
Wiesblatt ($0.775M)

Josi ($9.059M) - Barron ($1.15M)
Skjei ($7M) - Blankenburg ($0.775M)
Lauzon ($2M) - Englund ($0.775M)
Wilsby ($0.775M)
Stastney ($0.825M)

Saros ($7.74M)
Annunen ($0.8375M)

Ekholm retention: $0.250M
Turris Buyout: $2M
Duchene Buyout: $6.5556M

TOTAL: $80.06243M
2025-26 NHL Cap: $95.5M
REMAINING CAP SPACE: $15.43757M

Down on the farm, I would say last year they made the most of things and made it a competitive season by seeking out several AHL replacement players to plug holes, but there really weren't many true Preds prospects down there once Svechkov and L'Heureux got promoted. There should be a few more next season. Which will make the Ads more of a development squad than an AHL "contender" perhaps? We'll see. I would say there's still room to sign at least 1 top line forward (re-sign Bellows, or replace him with a similar level "star" UFA) and at least one top D. But overall there should be more youth than we've seen in recent years? That would only make sense at some point given the way we've been stockpiling draft picks and the parent team is in a building phase. :dunno:

2025-26 Milwaukee Admirals

Navrin Mutter - *Kyle Marino - Ryder Rolston

*Oasiz Wiesblatt

What a f***ing shitshow this organization is turning out to be.. a year after going ”all-in” and spending +100 mil on veteran FA’s.

I see this as great news, assuming they follow through with a rebuild. There really aren't any one or two moves that will put the Preds in any sort of serious contention. While they did spend WAY too much and got crappy results from it, at least they have the good veteran base to put kids around. Now...what Bruno will do is a different story, but a commit to an actual rebuild is a good start.
