Armchair GM Thread

Could the Canes go after Saros if they flame out this year due to Andersen being hurt (again) and Kochetkov just not being able to provide? They'd have the cap space and the assets. They've been rumoured to being in on Gibson so they're out for a goalie, that much we know. They also like their Finns so Saros would be quite a good fit for them actually.

The odds anyone swoops in and picks up Saros is pretty much a dream world scenario. For starters it assumes anyone still thinks he is worth that, and two it assumes Trotz would even be willing to trade him to start with. Frankly I don't think anyone will want that contract and I don't think Trotz is going to move Saros to start with.
There might be a couple teams that would take him for basically free (Oilers? Leafs? Not 100% up to date on whether they could make Cap work) to try to finally stabilize goaltending but I can’t imagine Trotz going for that, no

The best thing that could have happened for the scenario was Edmonton to have lost in 5, Carolina to have gotten beat, and Toronto to lose to Ottawa. Looks like none of them will likely happen.

The reason I say that is if they had it might have finally convinced some teams that while you might not need Vezina level goaltending, you do at least need someone that is more than just average. Considering I don't think any of the above will happen, I don't think teams learn that lesson nearly as much as they should have.

Leafs fans will definitely tell you that Stolarz is 10000000X better than Saros. (Whether he is or not, I don't know, probably not literally 10000000X, but you wouldn't want to suggest the idea anywhere they might see it regardless! :) )

Every one of their goalies is that way until they lose a series and then they are the worst player on the planet

Yep. Saros will be here for most of the 8 years. Need to build around him.

You mean build in spite of him. He will be a weak link and we may end up looking like Carolina.
He may rebound in a better system. I personally want him gone but I don't think there will be a taker. I'm just hoping when Bruno is gone he will rebound some or he will pull a Bobrovsky and lead us to the Cup after a couple seasons of pure mediocre seasons.

I won't completely write off Saros. The main thing I don't like is that we don't have an easy out in case things do continue along the downward trend of the past 2 seasons in terms of his play. But at the same time, I don't see anything that's just "totally broken" about Saros... he seems to still be moving well, no physical deterioration. And given our "legendary" goaltending coaching onboard, I still hold out some sliver of hope that everything will snap back into alignment with Saros, at least for some good number of years on that contract.

Whether having him snap back to top form will ever really matter much, given the likelihood of the team not really being competitive with or without him returning to form...? In a way, him returning to form could also actually hurt longer range planning, elevating us to lower draft spots, while still never contending.

End of the day, I would be ecstatic if we "end up looking like Carolina". I'm not holding my breath on that one.

:help:

Maybe...I'll give him the benefit of the doubt being surrounded by the worst group of D-men in the league for most the season. I mean, just about all of em should be 7th-bench on just about every other team.

Not that our offense helped much either.

Since Korn is back. Can package him with Vanderklok and actually make Saros contract have an even longer benefits for stable Goalie development?

I actually have the opposite read. The first round will be completed by Monday even if every remaining series goes to 7 games.

Hard to decipher but I think there's a 50% chance Bruno is back. I wouldn't go higher than that right now.

I'm personally not all that worried about Saros. I think he can bounce back to at least a mid tier starter once we get the rest of our team sorted out and with the rising cap his contract won't be that big of an albatross. The biggest concern for me is being forced to protect him whenever the next expansion draft happens, but that's a bridge to cross when we get there. Obviously with hindsight wish we had moved him and kept Askarov, but out of our current issues he's pretty low on my list.

Not sure if anyone else saw this report but this reported as the package Trotz demanded for ROR.

If NJ countered with two of these three pieces and Trotz didn't accept, he should be removed from power. Immediately.

May not be true. But for real you make your most valuable asset at the deadline unmoveable. What an absolute brain dead move.

Aside from nobody having any faith in Trotz and assuming the worst, do we have any reason to believe the Devils offered any two of those assets? Mercer played all season, Nemec featured all along the last 20-25 games and both played in the playoffs. It's likely giving up either of them was unpalatable to NJ.

I guess for me it's only a "low priority" issue just because we know EVERYTHING ELSE IS BROKEN EVEN WORSE on the team right now? On most teams it would be a huge issue. For us, meh, it's still down the list. That's not a good thing. :help:

I do not believe that. That's nonsensical.

One of Nemec, Mercer, OR a 1st, yes, absolutely. Possibly even Mercer+1st. I don't know what "RG" is and I'm not clicking on that... but... let's be real here, nobody would believe that.
