So what’s next for Waddell? He remains in negotiations with agents for his top free agents, including UFAs-to-be Boone Jenner, Erik Gudbranson and Mason Marchment as well as restricted free agents Adam Fantilli, Jet Greaves and Cole Sillinger.

And when he looks to how he’d like to bolster his club from the outside, the biggest answer comes down to adding to a forward group that struggled to score goals down the stretch.

“We’d really like to add to our top-nine group if possible,” Waddell said late last week. “The UFA market is not strong this summer with all the teams having cap space and signing their own players, so it would be through a trade. We just had pro meetings the last two days and got a lot of names, and I have a lot of phone calls to make to see who might be available and what teams are willing to do something.”

While teams continue to feel each other out before the moves begin, Waddell said few teams are in true “sell” mode, and most are looking for the same help up front.

“Thirty-two teams are going into the summer saying they all want to make the playoffs next year,” said Waddell, who previously spent six seasons with a Carolina franchise that just hoisted the Stanley Cup. “No teams are saying, ‘OK, I’m out this year.’ Everybody is trying to do the same thing to improve their team.

"But sometimes you can find the fit where somebody is not fitting in with somebody else that they’re willing to part with. The biggest thing, I keep a book every day of my call log and who I talked to and who’s available and all that. You gotta stay on the phones. You never know.”

With that in mind, Waddell acknowledged that he isn't against putting the Jackets' first-round draft pick, set for 14th overall when the draft begins June 26, on the market in an effort to facilitate deals.

“We would put that in play if it helped us get a good player this year,” he said. “I feel like we have a pretty good pool of prospects right now. ... We have some guys in Cleveland that 100 percent deserve an opportunity to play on this team next year. We’re in pretty good shape, so if we have to give up a pick or a prospect, it’s something we’ll have to look at.”
When it comes to the team’s own free agents, Waddell remains confident that signing the restricted free agents will be done in due time and doesn’t expect any potential offer sheets to trouble the Blue Jackets.

On the UFA front, Waddell is also content to wait to see how things shake out after saying at the end of the season there was mutual interest between the team and the trio of Jenner, Gudbranson and Marchment. A year ago, the Blue Jackets signed defensemen Ivan Provorov and Dante Fabbro – both set to hit the open market – in the hours leading up to July 1, and it could be a similar process this summer.

“I’ve talked to all the agents and I know where they’re at and they know where I’m at,” Waddell said. “There’s a difference, of course, which you always expect. I don’t know how it’s going to play out in the next couple weeks. If you remember, we signed Provorov and Fabbro the night before July 1, so when reality sets in for both sides, it takes two sides to make a deal.”

There’s also the fact that perhaps the biggest potential improvement for the Blue Jackets will come from within given how the team has built around draft picks in recent seasons.

And as Waddell hinted earlier, next year also could bring infusion of talent from the AHL. Such prospects as Luca Del Bel Belluz, Mikael Pyyhtiä, Jack Williams, Guillaume Richard and Corson Ceulemans were key pieces of a Cleveland team that came within one game of the AHL’s final four this year, and Waddell was a keen observer of the team’s playoff run. He left that group believing there are players already in the system who can be contributors right now.

“Playoff hockey is hard,” Waddell said. “I don’t care what level you’re playing at. When you get in the playoffs, it’s hard hockey, and we had some guys that really took a step forward – some of the young guys, and it was real encouraging. We had meetings today where there’s probably at least three guys right now that should be competing for jobs on our team. Now, whether we have that many spots open, we’ll at least feel like we have guys that are going to play games next year in the NHL.”

It’s all part of what Waddell calls a jigsaw puzzle, especially as he has to balance the upcoming season with the salary cap and the team’s long-term planning. Still, the GM remains confident that with cap space, an attractive first-round pick and a prospect pool he likes, he can make something happen to improve the Blue Jackets going into 2026-27.

“Our goal is to be better than we were last year, and our goal is to get into the playoffs for sure,” Waddell said. “Anything that gets proposed to us, we’ll take a hard look at it, and whatever we propose to somebody else, the same.

“I truly believe we’ll be able to do something. I’m not sure what that will be just yet, but I’m pretty confident we’ll be able to do something.”

I spy with my little eye the magic words of "biggest improvement could be from within"

We have a few in house guys that could swing things in either direction which is scary if no bigger moves go down. Johnson, Monahan and Voronkov all have potential to either give us a huge boost over last year or help sink the ship again

Which is funny to think that just a season before last, Monahan and KJ were the darlings of the club and playing exceptionally well. Voronkov was excellent until the fitness crash of 2025 (and 2026). I can't help but drink that cool aide and think that any return to form for even just one of those players (full year for Voronkov mind you) would be such a boom for this team. imagine if they all took a step back forward? We're having a different conversation on these boards.

Now, I'm no fool to think that this is a guarantee. They are "Ifs", but the good news is it isn't that we haven't seen good play before, it's that we can't seem to find the consistency. I still hope there is a big move up front, but even a return for just one of the three would be a big step forward for this club.

I mean, is he wrong? One of our biggest issues last season was Kent Johnson.

If we get 2024-2025 Kent Johnson, that’s going to make a massive difference.
KJ... and Voronkov for sure.. Honestly, its not really a reach to think Mateychuk will continue to take big steps.. Fantilli really developed his 2 way game and improved in many ways, I think he's prime for a breakout season.. KJ has had a good season followed by a bad.. in his 4 seasons.... my guess is the strength training ,which was addressed last August will help him stay at a solid playing weight , that and actually hiring a coach to work with the skilled players, will help KJ and Voronkov immensely.

Don is making alot of really good moves.. I would really focus on a shutdown defender, and bringing in a legit goalie to complement JET.. no nights off.. Elvis was like 48th in save %.. and his goals saved above expected was 71st out of 90 goalies..

For the record - That was put in by the article writer, not said by Waddell.

Also people are talking about KJ, Voronkov, Fantilli, Marchenko, and Mateychuk but where the real internal improvement will be in my opinion is Monahan. There was clearly something majorly wrong with him this year and if he can get healthy he's going to double his production.

I still don’t understand how he seemed to start the season so beat up.

It was posted here the other day but KJ looks like hes already up about 5-8 Lbs.

And if we don't, its a failure to do something to improve.

He's not wrong but is it something you are willing to stake the potential future of the team on?

Yes.

If we traded KJ or Voronkov we would have 35 posts just like Chinakhov about how Waddell is an idiot.
If he stays here and improves to return back to his potential, great.

But I'm not banking in it as being THE move of the season. It can't be the only thing that happens to improve the top 6. We need more than 1 person to improve the top 6 talent. I have less faith in Voronkov but there still needs to be an addition.

But I thought Tulsky was always the one running the show anyway. Which one is it?
Agree .. and some of those are nice adds .. but the core of the team was brought in by Don . They had missed the playoffs 9 years straight before he came in . He hired Rod … Like here , he started marinating players in the minors rather than rushing them . Attendance was dismal , he put the structure in place , built out the business side , scouting additions etc ..

Even as recently as last night there was a post on hockey reddit gushing about the team Tulsky built and how “it was always basically him”

Like they can’t have it both ways.

Tulsky has gotten lucky with some moves if we are honest.

No version of analytics will turn Necas into Rantanen into Stankoven and Taylor Hall.

He's lucky that worked out in his favor because trading for Rantanen without a signed extension was a ballsy move that luckily didn't blow up in his face.

The way I think about it is that we have a good chance of being around 90 points even if all three of them play the same way they did last year. It can only get better for those three.

I expect Voronkov to give us one good half, Monahan to continue to struggle, and KJ to have a massive turnaround.

I think Monahan might be cooked. If he took half the year off I would guess he might have been able to recover and get his body back to a high performance level, but he kept playing and just sucked. I don't like the chance's that he's going to be better.

If he stays here and improves to return back to his potential, great.

"Banking on" is a metaphor that implies there's some way of attaining certainty about our record, and there really isn't going to be no matter what we do.

For now I'll use "take chances on". Our best bet is to take our chances on KJ improving and Fantilli taking a step.

Dundon actually hired Rod. He spoke to him directly and made the choice independently of Don, who was being elevated to GM at the same time.

I’d argue Tulsky got them over the finish line. Sometimes that’s the difference you need though. Don could’ve done some ground work but that won’t get them to the finish line. So my confidence isn’t any better.

EDIT: Now I would like to make playoffs. That isn't my only goal and it will go step by step but getting into playoffs doesn't do anything for me long term. Id like to build sustainably.

There’s also different staff members, input, overview, departments, etc in all of the different orgs too. I don’t wanna discount and say absolutely not but there’s also that difference at play too.

Maybe. Or maybe it was that they didn’t have to face the Florida Panthers this season.

I just don't like the thought of pretending that an existing player on the roster is going to have a drastically different season and having it be considered "an addition to the roster".

If he has a much better and great season. Great I love it.

I don't want it to be an expectation and an excuse to not go out and make the roster better. Jarmo did that stuff all the time because he loved his own draft picks like nobody's business.

Johnson was downright bad last year so its witin reason he should see some improvement but he also had a 19.5% shooting percentage 2 years ago. I'm not going to expect him to replicate that either.

Maybe he realistically falls somewhere in the middle. Is that good enough for this team? I'm not so sure, which is why we need additional acquisitions.
