Man a few short months ago we were a cup dark horse.
Then what happened?

The biggest problem is that Columbus is likely good enough now to have zero realistic chance at a top 3 pick but bad enough that they are not likely a playoff team. Trading Werenski is a risk, but not sure there is any other obvious way to shift the odds to make them a top 10 team in the league in the next few years with the understanding that they could make a bad trade and go straight to the bottom of the league.
They have no gamechanger forwards on the prospect list and the goalies always seem to be 4-5 years away. No Gaudreau equivalent is signing in Columbus in free agency.
As long as you have most of Werenski, Marchenko, Fantilli, and Mateychuk, you're not going to do a full on rebuild.
And yet, that's not really a good enough core to be a contender. With no real means to acquire better high end pieces either
Truly hockey purgatory.
Um....pass?
Well I would hope we are doing due diligence in seeing if he would like to come here.Would you rather trade 4 1st round picks for Robertson or acquire him by trading some combination of roster players/picks/prospects?

Players, picks and prospects. 4 1st removes your greatest future capital.
I think they would
I agree that any trade needs to revolve around very high picks and/or high end prospects ready for a spot but yet to prove themselves. Once a 21 year old proves he is very good, they will be very expensive to get and you won't get enough new assets to change very much. That's why I'm not interested in any package deals for Werenski. We need a premier young asset, perhaps the #2OA pick. Secondary pieces add up to nothing for us.
Well there wasn't a Gaudreau equivalent signing in Columbus in 2022 either. I was the only one here who thought we had a >1% chance of signing him.
It's not a great situation but Carolina just won without any superstar players, they don't even have a Werenski. You have to take whatever path you can to improve.
Agree, because even though it’s an upgrade, we sorta end up with the same problem - we still need a top 6 wing.Player trade means likely Marchenko. So I would rather move 4 1sts for Robertson.
Columbus may be forced to pay stupid money to lure a star and hope that subsequent success allows more high end players to be interested. It is a little like Deshaun Watson to Cleveland. Cleveland had nothing to sell the player to get him there other than agreeing to pay him a super high guaranteed contract. Now that was a disaster. But the Browns understood what they needed to do to get him.I'd have no issue giving Robertson $14m, so what's one more million?
I have no problem giving up Marchenko for Robo. I think Dallas would be looking for mainly now pieces. Not futures.
Would Dallas match a $15.5x8 offer or take the picks? I know their cap situation is kinda tight, but I know they've offered him $14m.
I would also rather give 4 1sts than give up Marchenko. A first line of Robertson-Fantilli-Marchenko would be an absolute force.
Ran outta gas, what more can you say. Then what happened?
TBH, at this point, I think the organization could use some desperation. The problem is I would be so nervous for Don to make a move out of desperation - Its better not to at that point.
