Speculation: Armchair GM - 2026 CBJ Offseason Roster Moves, Rumors, and Discussion

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
If Debrusk and McCann are DW’s primary targets, he should just overpay for Marchment. He needs to quit beating around the bush and actually pay up for a long term solution that upgrades the top 6. It’s been sorely needed for the past couple of years and he just refuses to pay up while our assets depreciate. Just dumb all around.

going into the deadline in his first year firmly in the mix for a playoff spot, with two first round picks in hand, talking a big game about improving the team, and walking away with luke kunin (fart noise) was pretty egregious too
What do you want him to do? Of all the big names traded that deadline from what I can, everyone except Toffoli had some sort of no trade or movement clause. Its not crazy to think the Jackets were on their lists. Also it was his 1st year on the job and he may have wanted to see what he and no rock the boat too much after what happened the pervious off season.

And as far as last years 1st round draft picks go. We know he was working on a deal for Noah Dobson and from the reports, the Islanders wanted Voronkov and both 1sts, a deal a lot of us were happy he didn't make. So he isn't just sitting there with his thumb up his butt. Its takes 2 to tango and its very hard for the Jackets to find a partner.

i’m higher on debrusk than most and i really like jared mccann but how does this even move the needle?

our farm system is depleted and we’re missing high end talent. werenski’s a ticking clock. how are they not better off long term just taking a haul for werenski at this point

We don't have the real prospect rankings until this board goes through voting in a couple months, but in lieu of that, here is how Scott Wheeler ranks the current CBJ prospects (17th as a group in the entire league):

1) Jackson Smith - going back to college for '26-'27
2) Pyotr Andreyanov - staying in Russia until...2030?
3) Cayden Lindstrom - going back to college for '26-'27 (you can see the Lindstrom thread for the bust or not debate)
4) Sergei Ivanov - not (?) coming to North America for '26-'27
5) Jordan Dumais - now 22 years old, has spent two full years in Cleveland now, putting up 11-18-29 over 65 games in the AHL. He may never be an NHLer (though I think Wheeler is higher on him than most analysts).
6) Luca Pinelli (hey, kid shares my birthday) - 3 NHL games in '25-'26, though he did look pretty good in Cleveland
7) Luca Del Bel Belluz - hasn't shown much in 30 career NHL games, but producing well in Cleveland. Turns 23 in November.

The top 4 prospects are all already guaranteed not to play in the NHL until late March at the earliest this season, depending on their situation. If you believe Porty's "Waddell wants to leave a forward spot open for guys to compete," you're talking about, probably, a 4th line spot for one of the Luca's.

Sure, there might be some top end talent there, but two of the four best prospects are goalies, one of whom is 4 years away. Your highest rated forward is a former 4th overall pick whose current ceiling is maybe bottom six NHLer, at best. There's basically no truly high end talent in the pipeline, except for hoping Andreyanov becomes the next Russian goalie star in the NHL in ~5 years.

They've also spent a bunch of draft capital on Conor Garland, 39 games of Mason Marchment, and unloading Laine.

And we think we're going to compete for a Cup in the next 2 years?

The Dylan Larkin watch remains active. Vancouver, perhaps the one true long-term rebuilder, has yet to wade in. Jake DeBrusk, Elias Pettersson, and Brock Boeser are all names we could see move. There’s a lot of noise around Connor Hellebuyck, Zach Werenski, Jason Robertson, Matthew Knies, Colton Parayko and a host of others.

This looks like a Don Waddell buy if I’ve ever seen one *slaps car hood*

Beyond that, though, Kekäläinen is sitting on a ton of assets to make this team better. The No. 4 pick is a strong piece of currency if the Sabres want to get involved in trade talks for another star. They were involved in discussions with the Blues about Robert Thomas at the deadline. It doesn’t seem likely that he’ll get traded, but maybe Kekäläinen takes another swing at that. Maybe he calls the Blue Jackets about Kirill Marchenko, a player he drafted when he was the general manager in Columbus. Maple Leafs winger Matthew Knies could be in play. The Jets are also listening to inquiring teams about superstar goalie Connor Hellebuyck. There could be a lot of player movement in the coming days, and Kekäläinen has everything he needs to be right at the center of it.

Something I just thought of, if/when Werenski asks out, it causes a domino effect to.wggetd someone like Fantilli or Marchenko asks to be traded? This could completely destroy the franchise.

I suppose its possible but those guys aren't in the Team USA group chat so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Marchenko thing only gives me pause due to Seravalli saying he's heard he might not want to re-sign either.

Fantilli is under control until 2030

Bowness said he wanted to see Marchenko have a smile on his face and get back to having fun down the stretch. Was Marchenko unhappy because he was hurt or struggling? Or was it something else??? Maybe he doesn't like Bowness lol.

He was struggling under the pressure. I'm not reading anything more into it than that.
