Chychrun just re-signed for 8-years/$9m AAV... so we have a baseline for an Andersson extension now, should it be something the Flames want to do.

I’m not going to dig back into previous threads to find where I called that this would happen months ago, not that it’s really a surprise it happened, but still lol

Ras is cooked. Love the guy but signing him would be a colossal failure.
Love the guy too (and you guys all know that), but I get the sense he is going to have a massive fall-off in his thirties ala Dennis Wideman or Brent Seabrook. He has always been a mediocre possession player relative to his peers, his foot speed is suspect (this has been especially problematic this year), and he is probably going to be made redundant by the guys coming up. He was pushed off the top PP unit this year and his point production has suffered greatly as a result. Even his plus-minus sucks; while I get this is not always the most reliable stat, it tracks with how shaky his defensive play has been.

Seriously, the choice going forward is obvious. Locking him up for an 8m AAV is setting the team up for disaster (and could potentially block prospects such as Brewski, Mews, and even Zayne to a lesser extent).

Andersson has exactly the same number of PPP points this year as last year... He also has the same number of goals as last year....

His problem offensively is the same as Huberdeau and others, you can't get assists when no one can score.

44 points vs 27 points. 8x8 is probably fair. I think Id do anything under 9.
I'm not suggesting he'll get the same, just saying it gives us something to work with.
I actually think this could knock Ras to to the 7.5-8m range as he's not as good of an all around defenseman and he'll be 2 years older when teh contract kicks in.

It does give a good base. Zero reason its in the 9s now.

Okay, I'll correct myself, I should have said "he was pushed off full-time" this year because he had parts of last season on that top unit, but the point is still valid. The reason he was pushed off eventually was because of his anemic PP production. But when he was fully entrenched on the top unit from 2021-23 (and producing), he had 40 PP points those 2 seasons (19 and 21 respectively). That's objectively something that he just isn't getting back because the opportunity is no longer there.

Now his ES production is still okay (down from the past few years but still passable), but how much is he giving up for those 20-25 ES pts? Certainly a lot more than Mackenzie Weegar when he is on the ice. And I don't buy the premise that the team's lack of scoring has hampered the offensive output of our dmen significantly. For example, I noted earlier this year that the defense had held up relatively well offensively while the forwards had struggled. And indeed, Weegar is roughly pace to match his career highs from last season even though his S% has plummeted while Bahl smashed his previous career high in pts (the rest of the guys don't really matter in discussing because there isn't much of a sample size from previous seasons to talk about). My hypothesis is that Huska's system gives the defense more touches on the puck than the average team in the ozone (I have no way to prove this, this is just my hunch from watching the team and seeing how aggressive the dmen have to be because we are heavily reliant on cycling along the boards). So maybe you see a few extra pts from a higher octaine offense team, but I don't think you'd see a proportional increase. And even if you did (let's say a 15% increase in scoring - that puts the team around 3 GPG), it might mean an extra 5-6 pts when all is said and done? That certaintly wouldn't put Andy at where he was a few seasons ago.

And again, he is a DEFENSEMEN. He hasn't been doing the defending part all the well for a while now, and that's a far bigger issue than the 10-15 pts he loses from no longer being on the top PP. But if the team wants a Dennis Wideman 2.0 for the next 9 years, by all means, give him that extension.

My problem is more his defensive game. Just seems like his controller is unplugged too often these days.

I don't know for sure, but I feel like the complaints about his foot speed relate to something along the lines of constant lower body injuries. Something about his game lately (can't figure out what it is) makes me wonder if he's been having constant issues with his groin or knee for the last few years.

speed was never a strength for Andersson

If the Flames miss the playoffs, do you guys see them trading players like Rasmus Andersson, Backlund and Coleman in the off-season? Looking to build through the draft.

I think the rhetoric of "pay him 9M or else trade him" is a false dichotomy. Chychrun is younger than Rasmus and is having a superior season on a better team.

Bottom line is I think Andersson is a guy I want on this team, and more importantly he's a guy who by all accounts is all in on this team.

A lot of people are fascinated by the fact that this team is doing so much better this year than last year after objectively downgrading their talent. That isn't by accident. It's attitude. This team has the attitude they have because of guys like him. The nucleus of this team is solidly formed from guys who do not want to be traded.

There's a chance we could retrieve an asset through trade who eventually upgrades the talent of Rasmus Andersson. But to me I think combining the odds of that and the odds of replacing the attitude he brings to the locker room is more of a long shot.

I think keeping Andersson would be a huge factor in ensuring that Parekh has a successful start to his career. The more guys around him who bleed Flames, the more likely he is to develop that same attitude.

Calgary has never strayed away from their message about “retool not rebuild” and keeping players who want to play here. As long as Andersson wants to stay and is asking for something management deems within reason he’s staying. What Calgary has done though is remove older players for internal replacements/young players in return. Players like Markstrom (34), Toffoli (31), Tanev (34) were all moved even though there were no indications they wanted out. I’ve talked about it before, but I can see Backlund (36) getting the offer of whether he would want a trade this offseason or not, and Coleman (33) moved in the next 18 months. Backlund is currently a road block to Zary playing up the middle full time next season, and Coleman will begin to have internal competition for his spot by latest end of next season with guys like Stromgren, Honzek, Suniev, and maybe Gridin knocking at the door.

We already have an absolute excess of picks, unless Calgary starts targeting 2027 draft picks we probably look for young players instead in return. A development system can only handle so many players coming through at once, our AHL team is already gonna struggle to add Basha, Gridin, Suniev, and Misa in to Honzek, Stromgren, and Kerins while all keeping them in positions to develop and succeed.

Agreed it was never a strength, but I just feel like I've been noticing more awkward movements that coincide with the speed issue. I don't recall seeing that a few years ago. That's why I wonder if he has some kind of reoccurring lower body issue/ailment that is further contributing towards a rapid decline in speed.

I admit I’m a little less inclined to move Razzy now knowing he won’t see $9M

Weird, I think that Chychrun contract makes it far more likely that Ras gets 9M, or at least nearby. Over the last 3 seasons combined they have a total points difference of 2, and a total powerplay points difference of 1. Maybe recency bias will have some factor but not nearly as much as people think. Not to mention Rasmus is a right handed shot defenseman which is generally viewed as more of a premium on the market. I think it will depend on what guys like Dobson, Bouchard, and Ekblad get this summer. The first 2 will probably both get over 9M but the 3rd I will be shocked if he gets less than 8M unless he takes a discount to stay in Florida
