Armchair GM 2024-25 Season, Craig Conroy's Can Do Calgary Flames

Off course that's a deal happening after the season is done.
but then this would already have happened and the Habs would be getting like the 30th OA pick

What you guys think of Matheson + Calgary's 1st for R.Andersson and Pospisil?

Matheson is in the same spot as Andersson as far a contract is concerned. Will ask for less on his next contract though. Probably in the 5,5M$-6M$ range.

Calgary are pretty much set on the right side while they could use some help on the left side. Habs is set on the left side and needs a more stable top 4 on the right side.

You can either trade Matheson back for futures or extend him, depending on the direction your team is taking.
Matheson is a horrible hockey player. When he's not playing on the powerplay he is completely useless. He already lost the PP1 job in Montreal to a rookie there and will lose it here to a rookie next year too.

I would rather run back next year with Hanley in the top 4 than Matheson

Yeah that’s why he plays 25 minutes a night.he must be very bad.

Yeah you’re very very good at this…

Now how about PK? Where are Habs and Calgary, where Matheson and Andersson are biggest contributors?
I'm not really sure how that is relevant since 80% of ice time is spent at 5v5. Also PK results don't translate to individual player success. For example Calgary's PK has been bottom 10 in the league this year but Andersson has the 3rd most blocked shots in the league this year.

That's what I'm saying, you're very good at nitpicking stats that fit your bias. I won't argue that Andersson is better as I already know this. But this year?? Matheson has a very solid season playing a lot of time as a no.1 center on a team that is actually in the playoffs.

Also to be clear, the rookie that took his spot on the PP is 5th in the NHL in points.

time for you to find a different teams forum to make a proposal that is heavily weighted in the Habs favour centered on a middle pair dman

Im going to assume you meant #1 dman and not #1 center

And very solid is quite a reach. Among defensemen who have played 500+ minutes at 5v5 (~40+ games, totalling 192 defensemen) Matheson ranks 17th last in GA/60, 75th last in SA/60, 41st last in CA/60, and 9th last in xGA/60.

I admit that he is a good skater and can transition the puck decently when he has control but he is completely lost in his own end when the other team has the puck. Being 31 now it won't be long before he can't rely on that skating anymore and will completely fall off like Barrie and Klingberg did.

Now I'm not going to pretend that Andersson has been a defensive stud this year by any means, but his production this year is more a result of the teams inability to score rather than his own. He's certainly been providing the offensive chances.

As for who he lost the PP1 spot too ai am fully aware of who Lane Hutson is. I said Hutson would steal the job from him this summer. The issue is in Calgary it's the exact same situation with Parekh coming in next year, except Weegar is also already there.

There's a difference between "bad" and "it's the best we can do because other options are worse".

It's honestly like a "I want a ______. We have a _______ at home. _______ at home." meme. Now replace the line with "top pairing dman".

Peak Matheson > Slumping Andersson
Peak Matheson < Average Andersson
Peak Matheson << Peak Andersson

Even if you take Matheson’s value at what he’s saying it is the trade makes absolutely no sense for the Flames. Like why deal for a 31 year old LHD with where the flames are at. Giving up a young guy with some grit in Pospisil too

Makes no sense from a team need perspective even if you were willing to accept the nonsense value we’re attributing to Matheson here
