  • Monica McGoey: Catch her while she's hot. She is 8 4-2-2 since and including February 4. She is south Florida born and raised. The young trainer enters horses only at Tampa Bay and Gulfstream. She sends out few horses and secured her first lifetime win in 2018.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: Around $3,000,000.
  • Bill Sienkewicz announced his retirement after 45 years of training. He began his career in the late 1970s in New England. He had since moved his stock to Tampa. He was a solid 23% last year but had just one win this year. To see someone mention the now shuttered facilities such as Narragansett (RI), Suffolk Downs (MA) and Rockingham Park (NH) is a tribute to dedication and history but at the same time a somber reminder that the sport has lost too many wonderful facilities over the last few years.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgar Prado won for the 7,056th time in his career which moved him one behind Angel Cordero and 8th place all-time in North America history.
  • Joe Bravo, who entered today 3-for-71 in 2020, won twice on four mounts. One win came after a DQ to Paco Lopez.
  • Paco Lopez won twice and was DQ'd to last place on what could have been an additional win. He had nine wins in about 30 hours. I would imagine, considering his history especially in south Florida, he could be suspended yet again.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 8: Big Returns (Ramon Vasquez/Doug O'Neill) rocked the house as the longest shot on the board in a field of 10 won at 61-to-1. The California-bred who had raced all four starts prior in California paid $125.20. Did Michelle Yu tout that horse?! Anyway, horses who have run on California dirt -- not turf so much -- seem to have been doing well at this meet.
  • Race 6: Flatoutandfoxy (Calvin Borel/Cecil Borel) won in the mud. The brothers also combined to win two days ago. Cecil is 5-for-10 (50%) at the meet with Calvin riding four of the winners. Calvin rode this horse to victory last year at Churchill Downs when his wife Renay trained her first (and only to date) lifetime win.

  • Race 5: Charles Roberts, a 10-pound bug who was riding in Louisiana prior to this meet, won at 21-to-1.
  • Race 3: Kelsi Harr, a 7-pound bug who leads all apprentice riders at the meet, got the lead at the 1/4 pole and romped to a 4-length win. She is an Arkansas-native who was raised nearby.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Juan Hernandez has 79 wins which is second in North America this year.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 8: Lieutenant Dan (Drayden Van Dyke/Steven Miyadi) won the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes.
  • Umberto Rispoli has food poisoning and was off his mounts today.
  • Chalk: Favorites won most of the earlier races. The two exceptions were with Flavien Prat riding and he is the the leading rider at the meet.

First, Ms. PredsPartisan plays ONE race yesterday and wins 2 bills on an exacta at Fair Grounds (because of course she did, lol).

Second, sadly it feels like we are real close to a total shutdown.

Good job!

If the Florida Derby is canceled, we will see further erosion. Gulf is taking entries for the race.

Yesterday, I heard Michelle Yu suggest to newbies to bet $2 to place on long shots. To get acclimated. Today, she rocked a 61-to-1 to win from what I understand. I hope she bet to win!

I will say, Ms. PredsPartisan's methodology is mostly how fit they look paddock/post parade, then asking me what I think and doing the opposite of what I say.

Two things only a horse player will understand:

1. When Al Michaels said during a Kentucky Derby of Loni Anderson near the height of her fame "There's Loni Anderson. She's been known to go to the window."

2. When the character played by Richard Dreyfuss asks various people who they like and then he removes the horse from consideration after listening to their reasons.

FLORIDA DERBY
What: Grade 1. One of the most prestigious Kentucky Derby prep races. The top four finishers will receive 100-40-20-10 points, respectively.
Where: Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, Florida
When: Saturday, March 28, 2020, Race TBA
Time: TBA
Who: 3-year-olds
Distance: 1 1/8 mile

Surface: Dirt
Purse: $750,000 [reduced from $1,000,000 due to the ongoing virus and related financial restraints]
TV: TVG. To be updated.
History: Inaugurated in 1952. One of the most attractive races on the horse racing calendar. Three of the past seven and 14 total winners (excluding two DQ'd) of this race have gone onto victory in the Kentucky Derby. Oddly, the winners of the 1968 and 2019 Florida Derby were DQ'd from their Kentucky Derby wins. Todd Pletcher has won this race a record five times.
Kentucky Derby prep schedule: Kentucky Derby Prep Races

The card will be drawn Wednesday and the expectation is 10 stakes races will be held. Gulfstream is currently taking entries.

A list of probables, though not definitive, for the Florida Derby follows. Rider assignments are still being formalized and some listed could opt not to ride or could be replaced. Rosario and Franco appear to be locks to ride the two horses below..

And then there were five.

Charles Town temporarily shut. West Virginia is now added to the idle list. Arkansas, Cali and Fla holding court.

When Ky . closes this weekend, that leaves OK and Nebraska also.

I can't express the severity of the news that Todd Pletcher pulled his Belmont string out of New York. Todd Pletcher...out of New York. May have well see the Yankees play home games in Connecticut.

Wow. Commodore Downs. The forerunner of Prequse Isle. I forgot all about that track. Jockeys don't get their due. I think I read once where Sheldon Russell broke over 100 bones in his body. Here is a tribute written today to an otherwise obscure jockey who passed away. She broke her back while riding...not once but twice.

Former Jockey Mary Amodie Dies at 56 - BloodHorse

After retiring and recovering from the injuries, which include breaking her back twice, she graduated from nursing school and worked for various agencies as a traveling nurse.

He probably shouldn't be allowed to ride.

****Thanks for all the updates. As always, you're on top of things. We lazy dudes appreciate it!******

Here is something I am trying to comprehend.

Joe Bravo, Julien Leparoux and Joel Rosario were at Fair Grounds as well as my boy Junior Alvarado.

Gulfstream -- the way I understand -- issued a directive that all visiting riders must check into the track by Sunday night (two days ago). I could be mistaken but I think Junior went home to New York. The others made it to Gulf. Bravo of course won twice on Sunday. Rosario also won twice, IIRC. Junior cannot ride in Gulf this weekend. We will find out for sure when the card is drawn tomorrow (Wednesday). I hope Junior got notified in time because something is missing from this puzzle.

Also, regarding Dubai, those who traveled such as Elizabeth Dobles will have to undergo quarantines once returning to the USA. There is also the matter of shipping costs which I assume will be handled in some form between parties. Other than a trip to Dubai for a couple of days, probably an emotionally draining experience as so much of these past few days across the globe.

An intense article for sure. Emotions can run rampant with a situation such as this. As much as I have liked Elizabeth Dobles from the first interview I heard of her a couple or so years ago, and as much as I have touted her horses, some of these quotes have been open to harsh criticism on Paulick.

Many people have it much worse. She is a responsible trainer and that exudes through the comments and her owner praised her highly prior to the trip. They have a united connection. The boys from south Philly/Jersey seem to share a bond with the young trainer. But at the same time, plenty of folks are struggling right now. She has to be quarantined for a trip that has proved now to be unnecessary but she'll be back on her feet eventually. Let's hope that can be said of others.

https://www.paulickreport.com/news/...i-world-cup-cancellation-frustrates-horsemen/

Elizabeth Dobles learned the news during afternoon feed time on Sunday, ending before it began the dream of saddling her first Dubai World Cup runner, War Story.

“Everybody was pretty upset, not just upset but mad,” Dobles said Monday. “We all went over there, got our horses out there and all of a sudden we're not running. It's such a waste.”

The up-and-coming young trainer sent the 8-year-old gelding out to a third-place finish in the Pegasus World Cup in January, and believed he was coming into the Dubai race with a good chance.

lg.php

“I thought he was going to run really big,” Dobles said. “The worst thing for us is we missed the Challenger Stakes at Tampa to run in Dubai. There was another mile race at Gulfstream for him as well; we've missed three races all for this one race that was cancelled.”

War Story's owners also made the journey to Dubai for the race, arriving Sunday morning. They checked into their hotel and took a nap, then woke up to find the race cancelled.
Dobles and the owners went ahead with a dinner reservation at the world's tallest building, then travelled straight to the airport to fly back to the United States.

“They pretty much flew to Dubai to go eat,” said Dobles, maintaining her sense of humor.
American horsemen said they were given 48 hours after the announcement was made to fly out of Dubai, because the UAE government planned to shut down the airlines. The horses are tentatively scheduled to ship overseas on Wednesday, possibly to New Jersey, where they will undergo a mandatory return quarantine.

In the meantime, since no one is allowed to travel with them, the 21 American horses will be cared for by Dubai's quarantine staff. Dobles said she was sure that the staff would take great care of War Story and the others, but added that it's hard to leave such valuable horses in a situation with so many unknown factors.

“Especially now that they're all so ready to run, sitting in the stall and just going out to walk for an hour a day, it's not really enough for them,” Dobles said. “You have to worry about them kicking down the walls … I'm sure if there's something wrong they'll find a way to contact me, but it's still nerve-wracking.

“Of course, this whole situation is unprecedented. I just wish they hadn't waited until the last minute to make a decision.”

The trainer spoke from a quiet corner of an airport in New York City, on a multi-hour layover before flying home to Florida. Once she arrives there, Dobles will have to quarantine herself at home for 14 days without going to see her horses train at Palm Meadows or run at Gulfstream Park.

War Story will be allowed back into Palm Meadows after his quarantine period is over, possibly before Dobles is able to return herself.

“I got lucky in the sense that I didn't send a groom, because I only have to quarantine myself,” she said. “But now I'm training horses from my sofa, and that's not a way to train a horse.”

Though Dobles has cameras installed in the barn to keep an eye on the horses, she will have to rely on the word of her riders and assistants to know how her horses are progressing in their training. She does recognize the seriousness of the worldwide pandemic, and said she'll obey the 14-day quarantine to protect her staff and her loved ones.

Still, Dobles feels like the trip to Dubai was a waste of her time.

“Even though they're postponing the race until 2021, it's impossible to keep the horse's form for that long, so I doubt you'll see the same horses there next year,” Dobles said. “My horse is 8 years old already, so I'm sure he's not going to be a 9-year-old winning the Dubai World Cup.”

15 years ago! Few horses tantalized me as much as Afleet Alex. Certainly one of the most touching societal angles in racing ever, childhood cancer fund, but Alex was a smaller horse who dazzled me from early on. What a Triple Crown. From the disappointment and criticism of many pundits for Jeremy Rose, to the remarkable fortitude of Alex and spectacular stability of the rider in the Preakness (man, so close to danger), to undoubtedly the greatest kick I have ever witnessed in the Belmont Stakes. 15 years ago!

Look at these payouts in the Derby.

Program

Horse NameWinPlaceShow
10Giacomo$102.60$45.80$19.80
18Closing Argument-$70.00$24.80
12Afleet Alex--$4.60

  • $2 Exacta: (10-18) Paid $9,814.80
  • $2 Trifecta: (10-18-12) Paid $133,134.80
  • $1 Superfecta: (10-18-12-17) Paid $864,253.50
First: the stunning results of the Kentucky Derby:

"And Scrappy T. blew the turn. Afleet Alex... and Jeremy Rose almost fell out of the saddle! A dramatic occurrence..." "He's not anxious now, he ... is ... euphoric!"

"And Afleet Alex ran by Giacomo like he was standing still!" Chill bumps remain. The greatest kick I have ever witnessed in my horse racing history.

The Florida Derby and local pols...

What an uninformed and grammatically imperfect statement. How can something be "literally" and then "I assume"? From some sort of representative no less. She also doesn't understand the livelihoods of people depend on these races, similarly to those who are deprived; however, that is a reason, too.

Hallandale official: Gulfstream Park won’t shut down, threatens legal action

“There is literally no other reason for them to be racing other than keeping horse people happy, who are going to be watching and betting online, I assume," Javellana said.

But Kotulak cautioned it may not last.
Fonner is now racing Monday through Wednesday on a two-week trial basis. Kotulak doesn’t know if it will make sense to race beyond that.
“Today’s mutual handle of $1.3 million funded roughly only four future races and didn’t even cover our expenses for our weekly operation’s payroll,” he said.
Although Fonner had a large handle, only $28,571 came from on-site wagering. That leaves Kotulak wondering if this experiment is going to work.

“So we have a two-week trial. We have to keep pushing on,” he said. “And I think we put a nice foot forward as far as the video presentation and the new eyes that saw us.”
In just the last day, Kotulak said Fonner completed six new contracts with wagering facilities around the nation and even in Australia and Canada.
“All I want to do is conduct racing here, but I want to do it in a sensible manner,” Kotulak said. “I’m concerned about what we are going to accomplish in our two-week trial period.”

Fonner racing produces $1.3 million handle, but it may not be enough

***If I added it up correctly, they did about $2 million in handle today****

I always try to keep in mind what a dangerous and difficult job that jockeys have-even when I curse them for going wide:laugh:.

I was unfamiliar with Mary Amodie but her loss at such a young age is a shame.

I was also unfamiliar with Commodore Downs. I've been to Presque Isle a number of times and didn't know that there was a forerunner in the area to it.

A 16-year -old won a race, oldest in modern times per the article. Surpassed by a 17-year-old. I think currently the universal if not unofficial cutoff is 13 years of age and those are rare.

Reactions: Cyclones Rock
I miss the days of Beulah Park and River Downs when 9 year old first time starters weren't unheard of.

Turfway has cancelled the last three days of its meet (today-saturday). There will never be another live race at the facility that had been home to harness and thoroughbred racing since 1959.

COVID-19: Racing At Turfway Park Suspended Immediately; Backstretch To Remain Open - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

The backside is still open. It falls under a "life-sustaining business" exception.

Due to the current situation, there will be no sales of any nostalgic items (signage, seats, etc.) from the facility. I'm not happy that I didn't grab some stuff when I could have. I took 4 plastic box seats from River Downs. I never felt one iota of guilt for doing so:D

https://www.paulickreport.com/news/...ngel-cordero-as-eighth-all-time-by-races-won/

I'll have the Florida Derby info up later today but what we missed yesterday and since.
  • 1. Edgar Prado tied Angel Cordero for eighth most wins in North America history at 7,057. And then an error five years old revealed he was DQ'd from a win and remained one win behind.
  • 2. Back home: Twenty-seven horses from the USA who entered and shipped for the now-canceled Dubai World Cup card were due back in the states via Newark Liberty Airport and will be quarantined there. The horses were together on one plane. Man, I would have loved to seen that jumbo aircraft land.
  • 3. Luca! Luca Panici should return this week from his injury. He has mounts on Saturday. He will ride Sole Volante in the May 2 Arkansas Derby.
  • 4. Javier Castellano tested positive for the virus. He last rode about 10 days ago. He was replaced from his mounts today.
  • 5. States with live racing as of today: Florida, California, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.
  • 6. Ohio tracks are dark until at least April 6.
  • 7. Turfway, scheduled to close on Saturday, shut its doors a few days early due to the virus. Kentucky will be dark to live racing through most of April.
  • 8. Aqueduct officially closed its meet a few days early. The Wood Memorial, New York's biggest Kentucky Derby prep, was scheduled for April 4 but that will be rescheduled. New York will be dark through at least April 5.
