If the Oilers fans don't like the way the games are officiated, then the should be complaining to the only person that has a voice in any possible changes... their owner.

The refs work for the league, not the fans, not the players, not the coaches, and not the GMs. And the league controls how the games are officiated.

It seems a little extreme to be suggesting Oil trade McD. He needs a better supporting cast but he is the best player in the world and he is only 24. How often does any team trade a player like that at such an early age?

However, they might have an unusual situation. Re-sign Nuge and they have 2 top 6 C's, one of them outstanding. IF they could find the right trading partner it might make sense. That is a big if.
As good as McJesus and Draisaitl are i don't think you can have only 2 players taking up a quarter of your entire cap space , doesn't leave alot of money to sign basically a entire team. To me they have to trade Draisaitl for a nice package of good players. But i'm a Jets fan so i don't give a shit what the Oilers do or don't do, hopefully nothing.

Just for the record, I was not at the game in 1990 when Dave Ellett scored his famous overtime goal.

Based on everything I've read over the years, that apparently makes me unique among Winnipeggers.
I haven't posted in a while.

Yes....I was at the Dave Ellet overtime game. I've been a Jets fan for a long time. I attended many games where the Oilers and Gretz took it to us.
It was a very sweet moment when our Conner scored the overtime. My wife and I both screamed so loud. At my age, I thought I was going to get sick.

And then I have other memories.

I was a young professional. I noticed soon after we lost the Jets 1.0, I noticed many of my friends and relatives who were also young professionals heading
West for greener pastures.

I think I was sad for a long time from losing our team.

And then...

Props to True North for getting back our Jets. Many of those friends and relatives who had headed West have come back to Winnipeg. Coincidence?

It's a great time to be a Winnipeger.

In fairness, Luszczszyn had reason to be upset because his models are dependent on regular season data which is tainted when officiating changes.

Basically every response to him, though, has been 'you're right, the Jets were gifted that series on a platter!', which is incredibly frustrating given how hard, clean, and sharply they played that series as a whole.

It's why whenever I see his articles I skip them. Model this and model that, oh no my models don't actually do a good job predicting better come up with excuses...... juat terrible writing from a publication that should have a higher standard.

Teams that have overpaid for two or more superstars are counting on large yearly increase in the cap, but recently no luck on that front.

I don’t really get behind the more fairly part tbh. I’ve longed railed against how poor NHL officiating is and that the dept of player safety is a complete joke. I don’t think the main problem is low talent slugs dragging the stars down and not getting called for it. The main problem is the complete inconsistency and the culture that exists in which games are called a certain way depending on certain variables.

The NHL doesn’t have an issue marketing it’s star players because poor officiating neuters their talent. They have a problem marketing their stars because their marketing is A. Horrendous and B. The vast majority of people in their largest market don’t give a shit.

McDavid is the face of the NHL, I don’t think the NHL’s marketing efforts are magically enhanced by giving him an extra 25 pp points. As far as a longer run in the playoffs go, the only thing that’s going to help is the Oilers simply becoming a better team.

I think the more fairly part relates less to the amount of penalties called on each team but more with what the officials decide to let go. I think players like McDavid are going to naturally draw more penalties because they're difficult to defend against, and it does seem extremely strange that he drew 0 penalties over 8 playoff games in the past two seasons.

Their marketing of these guys suffers because of their locale - McDavid being in Edmonton does not help to market him in the US. You can try to market it as "watch this generational talent in the playoffs" but then completely neuter that by allowing the refs to ignore things. How many people are going to tune into ESPN next year in the playoffs and be surprised at how much the refs let players get away with.

Why is the refereeing being questioned now? (Rhetorical, as I think that I know the answer.) As a long-time fan, I expect (Heck, I know!) the referees will "put away their whistles" come playoff time. (Does it snow in Winnipeg in the winter-time?) Everybody knows this.....fans, coaches, players, the analytics guys. Some teams seem to adjust to it a little better than others and I prefer the hockey this way.

The experienced teams know what they can and can't get away with and adapt accordingly. We went through the same thing when the much more experienced Anaheim swept us in 2015.

I give you credit for staying with your opinion but as a Jets fan how does it not piss you off that people are trying to say that the Jets wouldn't have won if there was better officiating .

A lot of it could also be that in the regular season, "ticky-tack" calls go one way while in the playoffs, they tend to go the other way. Whatever the case may be, the Oilers had their PP chances. I certainly didn't feel like the refs favored us over them at all. One thing that's abundantly clear though is that the media everywhere other than Winnipeg sure has no interest at all in focusing much on the Jets.

Great White North eh...
The best way to deal with all this non-call bs is for the Jets to do the same to the Leafs. And hopefully the same in the semi's and the finals.

If we can get past the Leafs, it will be further evidence that the Jets are built for the playoffs and have the experience, depth and talent to win.

I don't care anymore what the media spin is. I'd rather be in this position getting disrespected than facing a long off-season, like the Oiler fans are.

Honestly, I don’t think the officiating has as much to do with peoples disinterest as you think. Calls or not, McDavid still looked pretty electric to me, it wasn’t the reason they lost. Having the stars of the game play on well constructed, competitive teams is far more important than ensuring every possible infraction gets called. While NHL officiating sucks, it’s not the biggest problem the NHL has with its entertainment value.

I actually stopped watching all NHL hockey when our Jets left, went to Moose games but it definitely was a step down from the NHL. I got to meet Mr.Chipman once when we had the Moose, got tickets and a tour of the MTS center through the wife's work because they were big sponsors and i asked him if we had any chance of getting the Jets back and he said they are always going to try to get back a NHL team and to not give up hope. Thank-you Mr Chipman, Thank-you very much.

The playoff officiating doesn't seem to have any adverse effects on Tampa's stars, nor did it on Chicago's, Washington's, or Pittsburgh in their past cup wins. Build a strong team around your starts and they will succeed.

It's just another in a long line of excuses for that org.

One question i have about officiating, why don't they pick up broken sticks if they get a chance to? I'm positive when we only had one reff they did, now they have 2 and 2 linesman. Imagine losing a series because of a bad bounce off a broken stick.
