The top 5 this year is said to be really good. And 3 of the 5 top ranked players are centers with MacKinnon having super star potential so this is the year to suck from Leafs POV imo.

How do Monahan, Barkov and Lindholm compare in ability and upside to Hodgson, Wilson, Kadri and B. Schenn? I guess you'd have to take that into consideration when you start dreaming of the consolation prize.

At this point what would "tanking" even mean? The roster is set. What are you gonna do, bench Phaneuf and put Mike Brown in net?

God dammit can these threads not be closed?

We are 2 games in and 1-1 just watch and enjoy the games. Tanking doesn't happen. If we lose we lose and get a good pick. If we win and make the playoffs then even better (if your a true fan)

**** me I hate that word. They aren't going to purposely lose or ice anything better than what they think is their best roster.

I loved this message board when we were competitive, no stupid tank threads.

Not necessarily. :sarcasm:

And in my view, it is always a good time to tank. The team is still generally garbage. Might as well do what Burke should have done four years ago and let this crappy team fail so we can draft premier players like Seguin and Hamilton.

No tanking, but no quick fixes either like the Luongo speculation. All that would do is get us ....say 5 more wins at best and a worse draft pick. Only make trades that work for us in the long term, which the Luongo trade would not. I think Nonis has said as much that this is his philosophy. It would be so disappointing to deviate from this mindset....

IMO the tanking strategy isn't going to work out well for the Leafs this year.

Everyone wants McKinnon, Jones or Druin but in order to guaruntee one of these players the Leafs would have to end up 2nd from last or last place. (which I don't think will happen).

The new rules for the lottery make it an equal chance to get first overall for all teams not making the playoffs.

I think the Leafs should try to win as many games as possible and make some chemistry with the guys that will now be there for a long time (Lupul, Grabo, Hopefully Kessel etc.). If they don't make the playoffs then we have just as good a chance as any other team to get the 1st pick.
I think this team has enough to get that done, I'm all for it.

water will always find its own level....

the truth imo is that the leafs are not a playoff team yet. our team is full of glaring holes from top to bottom. proper coaching and players buying into the system will allows us to appear competitive in the sense that games will be closer under carlyle then under wilson but at the end of the day a loss is a loss.

i dont think carlyle/nonis need to do anything for the leafs to finish bottom 5. our forwards as a whole are decent but our forward depth is atrocious. our defense is also very weak when you compare it to competitive team and our goaltending is what it is.

i dont mean this as a knock because i like the way our team is shaping up, i just dont think we are there yet and proof will come over the next 46 games.

Who cares. Kids are playing - and looking solid. Great for their development. Honestly its all I've been asking for the past couple of years. If we win terrific. If we loose great. Its win win.

This team is nowhere near competing for a cup. UFA's aren't coming here until the rebuild shows signs of light at the end of tunnel.

This draft looks like a pretty solid one, maybe similar to 2008 or 2009.

Stamkos/Doughty/Pietrangelo/Bogosian/Schenn <- 3/5 of these guys are franchise players. Not just first line material mind you, but franchise quality. Bogosian may still become a top pairing guy, Schenn likely a top 4 guy. Not to mention guys like Myers, Karlsson, Eberle, etc also going in the first round.

Tavares/Hedman/Duchene/Kane/Schenn <- Harder to gauge, but Tavares/Duchene/Kane/Hedman are all top line / top pairing guys. Tavares specifically is a franchise player, the other three may or may not be. Schenn will probably just be a solid 2nd liner would be my guess.

This draft similarly looks like it has a lot of quality. Good year to have more than one 1st round pick in and preferably an extra 2nd as well.

I still say 'tanking' is a philosophy is a 'fan's system' and not likely but I always think it's a good strategy if there's a good year or a good year coming up even if it's in 2 or 3 yrs time (for the draft). When's the last time the Leafs drafted a superstar like the ones in those lists?

Those are marketable. They can be put on cereal boxes or subway cars in Toronto or whatever Rogers has to do. I think having substanitated or justfiable hype is better than pretending you have a good team which previous squads were said to be.

I say go with what they have now but if an opportunity arises, make a deal for a draft pick or tank, whatever they're presented with, first. A bit early to talk about it, though?

I agree. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the Leafs showed glimpses and made the playoffs but the idea of a bubble finish is undesirable. The dive for top-5!

I don't think this team needs to tank it really, there's not enough in net and on D to put this team in the playoffs IMO. I think with this roster a top 10 pick is a sure thing, a top 5 pick likely isn't far off. In all honesty, who's worse than the Leafs in the East? Montreal? NYI?

Yeah. I see the Leafs somewhere in the 10-15 range in the East, and that guarantees us a top 10 pick.

Would I hope that the Leafs somehow made the playoffs? Heck yes...but the talent just isn't there yet.

What is best to do this year is to watch the games with no expectation of a win, have fun and be delightfully surprised.

Some people here are probably going to get mad like the world is going to end when we MIGHT lose to the Pens tonight. They don't even realize the huge difference in the rosters.

I'm just happy guys like Kadri and Gardiner are going to play and not guys like Lombardi/Connolly.

That's all I can ask for. With a top 10 pick...the Leafs can get some really good players. I'd love to have Gardiner, Pulock and Rielly on the same team.

The only thing I'm worried about a losing team is a mistake by the management and trading for the wrong players.

If we don't make the playoffs this year, I hope we're not chasing Luongo. He'll be 34 and our team isn't there to utilize the 3-4 years he'll be good to win the Cup.

Teams tend to lose a bit in the playoffs before they finally strike gold.

What moves could be made to indicate that this season is starting a rebuild?

- get rid of expensive vets
- promote from within
- create cap space
- don't make moves to shore up weak spots

Yup, it looks like a rebuild to me. About fricken time too.

One can only hope. i would even expand this by trading some marketable pieces to other teams if we can get som valuable picks in return. Grabrovski, Lupul, phaneuf, and even Kessel are all options to move in my books. It wouldn't be popular but would help with increasing our chances of getting better picks in the next 2-3 years.

There are inly a few pieces i would be hesitant to trade away (gardner, reilly and maybe kadri)
