Are we in Canada paranoid about 2026 or should we not be worried?

We really need to get back to the days of having those elite goalies again. If you go back to 1972 and go even up until the late 2010s we always had those elite goalies on our team but also the good ones who were left at home. 1972 Dryden and Esposito make it and Eddie Johnston fresh of sharing a Cup victory with Cheevers was the third stringer. But there was also Cheevers, Vachon, Giacomin, even Parent at the time. Lots to choose from. 1976 Dryden and Parent are hurt so Vachon is in there with Cheevers and Resch as back ups. But Esposito was available, a younger Billy Smith, Bouchard, Gilbert, etc. Even into the 1980s you have Roy, Vernon, Lemelin, Moog, Peeters, Liut as goalies who didn't make the 1987 team. 1998 Belfour, Fuhr, Potvin, Burke, even Chris Osgood didn't make the cut. Roy backs out in 2002 and we still have Brodeur, Joseph and Belfour. Burke, Luongo, Theodore, Giguere, Osgood, Potvin, Turco, etc. are all goalies that would have made fine 3rd stringers. Even 2016 Price, Holtby and Crawford was a good trio. All three did something significant to make the team. Price wins the Hart/Vezina in 2015 and Olympic gold in 2014. Holtby wins the Vezina in 2016. Crawford won the Cup in 2013 and 2015. None were bad choices. 8 years later it is shakier.

Look, I am okay with Binnington, Hill and Skinner in net. None of them will screw up where we lose. The team in front of them is epic. Stacked at forward and there should be some elite two-way defenseman there too. They don't have to steal a game. And two of them have won a Cup and the other almost did. That's loads of experience. The thing that bothers me is that other countries have at least one goalie who is better than either three and also the lack of depth we have with goalies. Those three I am comfortable with, but it isn't as if there are 6-7 other capable goalies that can take their spot. We have to do something about goaltending because if we are lacking anywhere it is there and I don't know of any that are going to take their spots.

Right now with young goalies you might have Sebastian Cossa, who is still in the minors and can't crack Detroit, and Devon Levi who may as well be in Siberia over Buffalo. Gabriel D'Aigle was once thought to be a promising goalie for the 2025 draft, but is he now?

Has he said as much? Haven't heard one way or another.

Yeah I am thinking that as well. Has the left shot, was playing well enough to make the team last year too. Could be a safe pick right now. I just figure the 4 teammates on the Avs and Knights are probably penciled in. I have a hard time seeing Bouchard left off the team. Dobson is among those types too. Power is pretty good himself and is definitely on the upward trend. That leaves Morrissey. Heck, why don't we just take 8 defensemen?

I wasn't worried about it either so much. I never understood how our defense wasn't the best or arguably the best out of anyone. And young too. Pietrangelo will be the only greybeard at 35 by the Olympics. That's fine. Everyone else is 30 or under. Toews will be 31 actually. But that's it.

When did Canada in a best on best not have a good defense? 1976 was the best ever. 1996 was certainly sketchy and that was mostly because Bourque and MacInnis weren't there. That made the D thinner. Even then, it was Coffey, Stevens, Niedermayer, Blake, Desjardins, Foote. The mobility could have been better on the back end, but that's it. 2004 and 2006 might come to mind, but there were some injury issues. 2004 Blake and Pronger missed out, then Redden and Jovanovski got hurt. So basically we had Niedermayer, Bouwmeester, Regehr, Foote, Brewer, Hannan. That would be a defense that was at best solid. They did the job but thankfully the forwards and goaltending were elite. 2006 had some injuries too but that team as a whole did not play as a unit. Just ugly.

So I like the 2026 prospects. Not just who is on the team, but who we are likely to leave off. Rielly, Doughty, Hamilton, maybe even Power. So I like that depth because it shows we have plenty of back ups.
I was never worried about the D. I thought it was great - and Makar is other worldly. Add the kids who are coming up and it will be VERY young and VERY talented for the next decade plus.

The forwards are, of course, beyond deep.

As for the goaltending... As the saying goes, "We only need one".

Re : "I am okay with Binnington, Hill and Skinner in net."

NO Skinner, please. The kid from Montreal, instead.

I know MacKinnon and Makar are "other worldly" but there is no one like McDavid.

Because I have run out of superlatives, McDavid is "Stupid Good"- I can't think of anything else.

A thread within a thread...

If you had to rank the Canadians from the 2019 Draft, give me your Top 10...

As for mine (them's slim pickins)...

1) Connor McMichael
2) Bowen Byram
3) Thomas Harley
4) Dylan Cozens
5) Kirby Dach
6) Brett Leason
7) Peyton Krebs
8) Jordan Spence
9) Rafael Harvey Pinard
10) Jakob Pelletier
H.M. Nolan Foote

What a dud of a draft.

The Olympics is only 15 months away. Players (up front) who will be making a push to be included in 2026 - only Suzuki and Thomas are above the age of 23. The only player I can see being dumped off the 2025 team is Marchand... and (maybe) Stone. Maybe Sid?

(in order)
Connor Bedard
LAF
Nick Suzuki
Seth Jarvis
Connor McMichael
Dylan Guenther
Robert Thomas
Wyatt Johnston

Then there are the players (in order) pushing the players above...

Will Cuylle
Jake Neighbours
Kent Johnson
Maklin Celebrini
Cole Perfetti
Connor Zary
Logan Stankoven
Cole Sillinger
Adam Fantilli
Quinton Byfield

There's no more room at the Inn.

Montembeault you mean? I don't know what garners him a spot on this team other than having a Canadian passport. Skinner is my 3rd stringer, and I am fine with that because the other two won a Cup and have more experience overall. But how is Skinner a bad choice for the 3rd goalie? He played well in the playoffs last year. Got to Game 7. One game and we are crowning him as a Cup winner and we have three goalies with that title. I think we're fine, none of them are going to turn into a black hole and we aren't playing the 1981 Soviets or anything like that in this tournament so I can't imagine a game like in 1981 for any of them.

I've just seen Skinner <bleep> the bed so many times, I'm scared to have him in goal. But, then again, Montembeault has BAD games as well so...

The problem with Skinner is that he has simply not been consistent. He had a couple of games in the playoffs where he looked great (especially the clinching game against the Stars) but he was also pulled last playoffs and called out by his captain (who carried that team to the finals) for sucking so bad. We dont want that kind of guy anywhere near the team no?

Just compare him to Monty:

Ranking team D over the last 2 years (including this one):
Shots against:
Montreal: allowed the 4th most in the league.
Edmonton: Allowed the 3rd fewest in the league.

High Danger scoring chances:
Montreal: allowed the 3rd most in the league.
Edmonton: Allowed the fewest in the league.

Save% for the 2 goalies:

Montembault: .902
Skinner: .901 (his backup Pickard is rocking a .905)

I think we can come up with a dozen or so guys I'd take before Skinner. I mean, when Edmonton has given up the 10th fewest goals the last 2 years but has the 24th best save%, I don't think we should be looking at their goalies. That looks like their big issue TBH.

Dylan Guenther just got robbed of a goal - Utah's 2nd against Toronto. The puck went off DG's foot, he reacted like he scored but McBain was awarded the goal.

Does the NHL do a heavy duty review of the goals / points after the game?

Well we usually take an obscure 3rd stringer anyway. Sean Burke in 1991, Eddie Johnston in 1972, Kelly Hrudey in 1987 (although I guess he was pretty good then), Bill Ranford in 1996, Mike Smith in 2014. Someone off the grid/radar of Team Canada. Maybe Montembeault is the guy that fits that bill, but Montreal is just such a black hole of a franchise right now, nothing good is coming out of there. I figure Skinner is a 3rd stringer but won't play without an injury. Not to mention, he's young too, just in his 3rd season.

I’d argue Mike Smith wasn’t very obscure, he was arguably Canada’s 3rd best goalie after Price and Luongo stats-wise and playoff-wise. Fleury putting up putrid seasons and earning the choker of the NHL title in the playoffs (.876% in playoffs from 2010-2013).

Braden Holtby was just starting to establish himself as one of the premier starters

Corey Crawford might have been snubbed. I remember some people had him over Smith, but Smith was certainly in the conversation. It wasn’t like a Josh Harding and Devan Dubnyk being named to the case, Smith was a top 10 goalie at that time.
