It's the Red Wings. They're always contenders.

They could ice a team full of Dan Cleary's and they'd still somehow make the Playoffs.

Realize this for a sec. Wings are a contender and in 1st atm this late in the season with practically everyone on the roster from their farm system. Quincey came up through the Wings system before he went to Colorado and LA. The only 2 players not drafted are Miller and Gus. Good God!

But they can't draft..

Dark Horse. I mean, I don't think I'd pick them or anything, but no one could really claim to be surprised if they made a run out of it.

I don't think anyone has ever said that about the Wings seriously...

Over the years plenty of people have. "Haven't drafted a star since 1999, and even then they just got lucky."

I guess I have seen that a few times around here. A team fighting for first in the East that is almost entirely comprised of homegrown talent is nothing short of elite at drafting.

Yes they are a contender, but so are about 10 other teams. There isn't any one or two great teams that are huge favorites this season.

This is not the Wings roster that people have grown accustom to over the past few years. Gone are older and slower players like Holmstrom, Hudler, Samuelsson and Franzen and in their place they have added youth, skill and even more importantly speed in guys like Nyquist, Tatar, Helm and Sheehan. That's why I think this roster has a much better chance to contend in the playoffs compared to recent year's past.

Yes, all four are a major reason for their success this year. Glendenning's impact is substantial as well in my opinion.

Big fan of Glendening. I love when guys come out of nowhere and surprise you.

I feel like the Wings would be better off getting whatever they can for Helm in a trade at this point,he could probably be a nice piece as part of a trade for a defenseman

Babcocks obsessed with wanting him to be a top six winger now and has even given him powerplay time at times and he's on pace for....37 points

Helm has played his role aside of Datsyuk and Tatar perfectly. He should be one of the last players to complain about.

Before guys like Tatar, Sheahan, and Nyquist came up in the last couple seasons there was a lot of momentum on this site calling their drafting and development vastly overblown due to the leaner years in the mid/late 2000s and not being able to handle the loss of Lidstrom (lol)

I understand you were probably being sarcastic but please don't go full Lowe on the DRW making the playoffs.

The Wings moving from the west to the east felt like throwing a wolverine over the fence into our neighbors yard.

So why are you quoting them and not the overwhelming majority of people who have said the opposite...just to be smug? Trying to show off?

Who all on the DRWs weren't drafted? Not including Dekeyser/Glendening who they snatched up as college kids for free without having to use draft picks.
