Yep, the Tampa D-man tripped Nylander going into the corner on a PP, and the refs ignored it to prevent the Leafs getting a 5-on-3.

But they were giddy foaming around the mouth giving us a phantom high sticking penalty giving Tampa a 5 on 3 PP.
I think the refs are more concerned with the appearance of balance/fairness than actually calling the rulebook and it is one of the most frustrating things about this sport vs other sports..

That's part of it. Quick perimeter passing and little slot activity means less physical contact and less opportunity to draw a penalty. It's not like there have been a lot of blatant penalties that didn't get called.

There have been a couple, the same as for every team, as refs are reluctant to call the extra, but nothing really bad.
It's much more "we don't earn them".

I'll have to call BS on that. The Leafs get called with ticky tacky penalties for 5 on 3's against.

Same could be said for the insinuation that they don’t work hard enough on the poweplay to draw a call.

You both seem to have misunderstood me.
I didn't say, or even imply, that it was because of a lack of effort, but because their style, with lots of quick passes mainly on the perimeter, isn't as condusive to drawing penalties.

Just bumping this. Have we received a 5 on 3 PP this season yet? Also, I mentioned this to a friend (Habs fan) the other day and he didn't believe me, is there a stats website that tracks this?

NHL does.
Leafs are the only team this year. Only other team in the last 3+ seasons without one all season was Isles in 20-21 (that season we had the most).
Over those 3+ seasons Toronto has had 27, tied for 12th most (Sens lead with 41, Isles trail with 12).
Caps, Oils, Pens, and Bruins lead in 5on3 efficiency (no surprise), we're middle of the pack, and Blues, Panthers, Flyers, and Flames are at the bottom.
They started tracking in 09-10. In that year we had 30, the second highest single season count. Total overall since they started counting, Tampa has 164, and we are second with 159.
