There are probably tons of hidden gems that go unnoticed. Xhekaj found his niche. Was lucky enough to get spotted and begin a career in hockey. Just because he keeps hitting bodies and throwing punches, it doesn't mean he's the next McDavid. I think fans in Montreal need to chill a bit.

Let's see what he becomes. But no need to say he has a low ceiling when we don't yet know what he'll become...

Funny because I remember him avoiding fights here.. What are you basing that off of? What’s he gonna do hold and grab his way through the fight?

Not, even remotely, in the same weight class. In the new world of hockey, fighters are just rare, and guys like Laraque don't exist anymore.

Arber would be the one wanting to grab, George could finish him in 1 shot.

Big slow slugs that can’t hockey and just grab their way through fights? Good thing they don’t exist anymore. LaCraque wouldn’t know what hit him, Kassian 2.0

He's better than Gudas.
Not yet he isn't

Some people really need to temper their expectations for Wifi imo. If he develops to be anything other than a quality bottom pairing defensemen, we've got the jackpot with him. I don't see it happening but I'd love for it to take place.

And it’s not like if a quality and physical bottom pairing Dmen that other players are scares off is not a valuable piece to any teams.

Well he's playing better, than when Romanov started, it wasn't pretty sometimes.

I dunno, would you classify gudas as a proper top 4 dman? He's more in the emelin mould , I think.

WiFi has a long way to go but the excitement is more about how entertaining of a player he can become, and not to so much his ceiling attributes.

Derian was better

Yeah, Kevin was more of a specialist, whereas derian had the full game.

That being said, derian was just at the right place at the right time. If he played today, first of all his skating would be exposed big time... It was already heavily exposed back in the late 2000s and the game is even faster now.

Secondly, he would be in the penalty box all the time today. He was vicious with his stickwork shift in and shift out but that stuff is just not tolerated anymore.

This is an urban legend that Derian was that bad of a skater. It was magnified by him suffering severe knee injuries and losing a step just as hockey took a turn for speed after the lockout. In Dallas his skating was decent for a big guy, and historically defensemen of Derian' mold were always valuable.

Despite all this, he was still a great PKer with the Flyers.

It was never his strongest suit in Dallas either. But he was a vicious player, and he had way of equalizing that factor. That clutch and grab era with open rules in front of the net was a match made in heaven for him.
