Player Discussion Arber Xhekaj: The Sheriff

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.
  • We are currently aware of "log in/security error" issues that are affecting some users. We apologize and ask for your patience as we try to get these issues fixed.
A buddy of mine I play beer league with, who is a Laffs fan, just asked me when the Habs were going to trade Suzuki and Xhekaj because our window closed and that we are about to scorch earth our roster…I think their fan base in general needs to touch grass
Your buddy needs to watch hockey other than Leafs TV.............................man some leaf fans are void of a brain at times. He may have forgotten to take his meds that day.........

He's looked better with the #4 guy audition than Kovacevic/Struble/Harris. I know a lot of young defenseman are coming in but I am amazed that a lot see Arber simply as a third pairing defenseman. He has enough skills to be in the top-4 for a long long time if he continues to develop properly.
No they really don't. Go back and read what was said about him last year which was spot on.
Many of us felt it was impossible to gauge what his ceiling was going to be given his progression curve.
I watched Arber play a near perfect game earlier this season against Boston so it was obviously always in him...

He couldn't replicate it until after his recall and it became very evident he was playing like a 4D on our recent road trip.
There is nothing more satisfying than watching players refuse to take on a defender along the boards.
Unless it's watching a forward shy away from picking up a puck in the corner they'd won a race to.

Mark my words Florian will be exactly the same in terms of unexpected progression.
He's starting to show that now and some of us saw it's beginnings in camp.

lol they really don’t. It’s too funny.

I’ll talk with some leaf fan friends over the last few years and invariably they say ‘we need goaltending’ and I have to stop myself screaming at them ‘YOU NEED D!!’
And it barely registers with them haha. It’s bizarre. Like they’ve been burning out good or at least promising goalies since f***ing Cujo.

I can’t even remember the last time they’ve had a really good defensive D man. I hope they never figure it out.
That Borje Salming character was pretty good.

I can't wait for the first game Arber and Florian suit up for the Habs at the Bell Center.
I'll be the one in the crowd holding up the sign that says...

"Every Day is Kosovo Independence Day"

Yes they really do. I invite you to scroll this thread which shows you most posters sees Xhekaj as a third pairing defenseman. For sure they are exceptions but they aren't the norm. I'm glad if there is posters that sees Xhekaj otherwise.

And that was last month and not last year.

Not the posts/posters I listen to or pay much attention to.
What can I tell you.

I would offer Xhekaj a 8 year 2.5M AAV contract right now if he would accept it. Banking on his upside.
I can't see that as being realistic, if you want to go 8 years it would minimum be 4 or 4.5. And even that is Arber taking the security of a long term deal over maximizing his potential earnings.

Now we should definitely see what he would want in terms of a long term deal since he's such a unique player that there will always be a spot for him. But chances are they will have a bridge deal that brings him to his last RFA year. It's also worth noting that whatever number he comes in at will kind of set the tone for the Guhle contract as well.

You never know though.
I think Hughes will try to tie up every core piece he believes in long term if he can.
That was the whole idea of trying to set a bar with Suzuki it sets a tone for those who want to be a part of it.
This of course provided he thinks the player can be moved easily at any point during the term of said contract.
I think he'll also avoid NTC NMC like the plague being on the other side of it now.

We should be increasing our COSTCO scouting staff. No question about that.

I'd be willing to move the Rocket from Laval to Kirkland.

His contract ends this summer and how much will he get from Hughes? Any predictions?

I'm down for a 3.125 per for 8yrs to anything under a 4 million AAV.

I do however want to reiterate how bad the redraft was. For example he has Broberg 11th, Kaliyev 13th, Parssinen 14th and Sogaard 19th. And he had Kochetkov 53rd, Brink 56th and Alex Vlasic 66th.

I've personally given up on figuring out Pronman's player evaluations.

Never know. His blue color nature might take the money for the security.
His agent will smack him over the head w a 2 x 4, followed by NHLPA rep

Abner is already playing in our top four defence pairings and is quickly becoming a team leader. He’s only going to get better and more impactful. If you can lock up that type of player for under $4 million per year, you are doing well. Very well.

I'd try to go 6 years/3.0M per (he will guaranteed get a fighting premium) and let him go after if he falls off. The sad part of his player type is their career is a higher risk to take a downturn from injuries. He likely knows too so will accept the term, takes him to UFA at 29.

With the looming cap increase to come, doubt he takes $3M for 6 years. This smells bridge deal big time. 2 or 3 years at $2M-$3M or they try a 1 year deal. If it's a 5+ year contract, I think his agent will push for $4M+

My gut tells me it will be 2 year bridge. Hard to predict the AAV but something around $2M or just north of that. A prove it contract where he comes out of that as a legit top 4D and then goes after the $5M+ long term deal.

Doubt his agent will advise him to take the team friendly 6-8 year extension with a looming cap increase to come.

If he wants the security because he is a blue color type, he don't have to take the 8 year term. He can easily get the 5 year deal at $3M. That still sets himself up for life if there is a career injury or he fades in development.

These are likely the types of contracts Hughes and his agent will discuss.
1 year at $1.75M
2 years at $2.25M
3 years at $2.5M
4 years at $2.75M
5 years at $3M

Got a new role at work and doing all of our American projects while also mentoring juniors. We had several seniors retire so yeah, my work load took a turn!

Still miss some of you guys. Just can't be as active anymore.

Hughes has to try to lock him up longterm. These are the types of opportunities you cash in on. Xhekaj may want the security of a longterm deal over the risk of a short term one. Especially given the risks he faces as a pugilistic specialist.
