Did Yvan sport Elvis-type elevator in-soles in any of those pics? :sarcasm:
It's safe to assume so otherwise how on earth cold he possibly be at 80 years old and be as tall if not taller than Cole?
Secretly I'm hoping for a growth spurt as I enter my 70's to compensate for the shrinkage of my 60's.lol

Teams are fighting and clawing for any form of competitive advantage out there and having toughness accompanying skill is the best way to compete. The NHL has always been this way.
More physically isn't a competitive advantage, it only works on a larger scale when you play a tired team (like the Habs last game). Otherwise, it's only effective against the cream puff players à la Drouin and poor skaters who can't escape/avoid (many on the habs).

Fun fact, the Habs have been hitting machines under Julien/Ducharme (12th, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 1st. 11th, 28th, 14th in hits from 2016 to this year) and I can't say it allowed them to win more games...

Saying that, I'm annoyed by posters always recommending the team to draft 5'11'' and under players.

Look at good ole Corey Perry, not exactly an enforcer but one of the most pestering players in the league. A large portion of his game involves getting in the head of the opposition and he was very good at it. He picks his spots but is careful who he messes with. B Tkachuk is a newer version of Perry and if he knows there is no one out there to make him accountable, he will take advantage of it. I was not suggesting that I want Arber fighting and spending his time in the penalty box but I do want him to play as close to the line as possible because it sends a message that's all.
Brady T. was crapping on the Habs when Arber was in the line-up last year. Ottawa coach was sending their goons after Arber and Brady avoids anything bigger than him on the ice (no just the Arbers) to aim at smaller target anyway.

So what the f*** happened that Xhekaj is rotting in the AHL from what it looks like end of the season at least? Despite how MSL thought his defensive game was lacking it is still better than Matheson, Harris and Barron's combined. I hate this bullshit. You have a player that is solid, and has what this team lacks the most - toughness and willingness to stand up for his teammate. MSL and his clown crew are clueless.
Arber turned the Rocket into a winning team and helped Mailloux not to flop as a dmen. Just that is a win long term for the Habs

It’s the “same ole same ole” argument that some of us have been complaining about for decades now. For some reason, after they won the cup in 93, they’ve been obsessed with putting together small, soft teams with no high end skill. It’s almost like they took the blueprint of all of those successful teams from the dynasty years and went in the opposite direction.

We’ve got a team with almost no size up front (Anderson, Pezzetta, and now Slafkovsky and Dach). Even our fourth liners are small and not that skilled. No offense to Messieurs Stephens and Ylonen. Having Gallagher, Harvey-Pinard, Caufield, Newhook and Evans is redundant and unnecessary. Should only have two guys that small, and only if they are ultra skilled like Caufield/Newhook.

As blind as he was in some areas, (miserable Gallagher contract) Bergevin started to work on this and Hughes is continuing to address these issues. He’s added Slafkovsky, he’s brought in Dach, the team drafted the best defenseman in the draft last year in Reinbacher. Struble has made the jump and is playing well, while Guhle is going to be an anchor on the top pair for years. Xhekaj and Mailloux are coming up soon and they will make life miserable for others.

I’d love to see them finally focus on talented hard nosed players in the bottom six. Develop a team culture that embraces the pack mentality. I think Beck and Roy could be the foundations of an excellent/dominant third line, while adding Florian Xhekaj and Tuch to the fourth line would be ideal.

In a couple years:

Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Newhook - Dach - _____
Roy - Beck - Anderson
Harvey Pinard - Xhekaj - Tuch

Guhle - Reinbacher
Struble - Barron
Xhekaj - Mailloux

Montembeault

A lineup built for long playoff runs, that can play the game any way you’d like.
Barron isn't very good.

They weren't doing so hot with Struble in the lineup in Laval so why would Arber get sent down and he gets to stay in Montreal? Arber was supposedly sent down on a conditioning stint and it seems that Struble has taken his place. Don't get me wrong but it just looks odd from the outside looking in.

It wasn't really a conditioning stint. He was just straight up demoted and Struble outplayed him in his absence. They didn't like his game to start the year and Struble has just been too good to demote, no harm in letting Xhekaj simmer for a bit and learn to be the big dog and a team leader in the AHL. He's using his offensive skill set in Laval too in a way he hasn't really been able to as an NHLer.

I'm sure he's frustrated about being blocked and I do think they're reaching a decision point soon but Xhekaj wasn't so good last year that his spot was written in stone and he wasn't great to start the year, and Struble has taken his spot and run with it.

I don't really see this honestly. They didn't "put together a small team" this year, Dach, Anderson, and Pearson are just injured and Xhekaj is developing in the NHL. It's not like Xhekaj's current replacement (Struble) is a soft player either. I don't really see the point in getting wound up about size because of the game 45 lineup in a tank year with a billion injuries, the only smallish guy on the blue line right now is Harris and it's not like they're building this team around Stephens, Ylonen, and Harvey-Pinard either.

We just drafted a 6'3 230lb winger, traded for a 6'4 C, and drafted a 6'3 defenceman to be core players in back to back years, I don't think they're trying to build a small, soft team.

He didn't get sent down on a conditioning stint.. he was sent down to work on his game.

The sources I’ve seen point to the initial announcement as involving a demotion for Arber to work on his game, not simply rehab from the injury he had suffered before being sent down:

The closest comment about conditioning I found was Anthony Martineau citing a Habs source saying that it was “technically” not a conditioning stint:

Anthony Marcotte tweeted about how surprised Arber was at his demotion but after discussing with management, they told him that they wanted him to work on his defensive positioning:

Marcotte added that there was no timeline given for how long Arber would remain in Laval:

Which appears to be working, and begs the question "what's the problem". This board is obsessed with players developing anywhere other then the NHL..... with the exception of an undrafted, unpolished Xhekaj. Strange.

Will add, I love the way the team is handling player development. You earn a spot in camp, it's yours. You play well in the AHL, your next up. You struggle in the NHL, see you soon. It's the right recipe for a winning culture.

When you become a fan favorite - everything flies out the window.

Xhekaj could be a -100 in Laval and they'd still be doing this because they like his face punching ability.

It's the hockey dad syndrome. He has a lot of dads around here. FWIW I love the guy and expect him to play 15-18 mins for the next 15 years but he needed some work.

Same here.. he's gonna be here a long time. He's beloved in the room. He's a great fighter. He's a nuclear deterrent. He's got size. He's got jam. He's mean. He's got skill.

He's here for the long term but they are making sure he realizes his full potential and doesn't spend his whole career chasing hits and fights.

You missed the part where I wrote that Hughes recognizes the problem and is addressing it I guess, while mentioning all 3 of those players?

Yup, think about the guy you just described and add on 25-30 points and a defensive rock and you have a real gem. A bit of a unicorn if they can get him buttoned up.

So basically it wasn't discussed with him until his demotion. Wouldn't MSL communicate that sort of thing to him at practice or in an individual meeting?

Arber said he was surprised by the demotion but it’s not clear when he was told.

"It wasn't really a conditioning stint. Why wouldn't he hear that from his coach beforehand?

I absolutely love Arber...but this was the right decision. He was a disaster this year defensively and was taking some really dumb penalties to boot. I wouldn't put too much stock in what the press says. And I'll bet that MSL gave him crystal-clear signals that he was on thin ice.

JMHO. And this will pay off in the long run for many reasons. One being it seems his presence is helping both him AND Mailloux. Plus we found out what kind of player Struble is which was clearly a fantastic positive side-effect of this move. So I see it as a Win-WIn-Win. Besides, we're loaded at LD so we can tinker...

They can’t undo the burger thing anyway no take-backsies

They’re log jammed. Too bad he can’t give Barron a little breather and tag out.

I like what he has done since going there and have posted about it multiple times. He has cut down the penalty minutes, scored points, and helped Laval turn its season around, its much more than I expected and I am one of his biggest fans on this board. I don't like seeing the habs get pushed around and yeah I'm an old-school fan and back in the day no one pushed us around. I realize the game is changing but toughness is still a necessity in my opinion.

I agree on all counts, bud. I'm an old-school fan like you. My first favorite player was Rogatien Vachon in the mid-60's. So I get it. He'll be back with a vengeance. I have no doubts.
