Will Xhekaj save the Rocket season while he learn to play big minutes? The 6-3 record indicates he is doing just that.

Ancient Aliens theorist say YES.

I am not sold that they want his style of play in the line up. Have you ever witnessed a softer Habs team?
Well, we did go through the Smurf era where we routinely got rag-dolled by the Bruins, that was embarrassing. When you say soft, are you referring to the lack of pushback after the Slafkovsky hit? The league as a whole is softer than it used to be because the NHL wants as many odd-man situations as possible and every single thing is called, the enforcer role is almost extinct and if you read most of the team boards here, they will say the same thing about their teams.

They might want more from Arber than just a bottom-pairing defenseman and the feeling might be that a stint in the AHL will give him a chance to work on his game and so far it is working. He didn't go there and pout about it and the team's fortunes have turned around with him in uniform granted, they are getting better goaltending but part of that might have to do with his defensive play and what he brings to his D partner. I want to believe that he is in the long-term plans.

I do find it strange that he was demoted over Barron who has struggled lately and there might have been a rift with MSL but sooner or later he will be back and we will see how things play out.

There are some coaches who think toughness is overrated and I think this management team believes this.

Said it in the GDT, but Xhekaj needs to study every single shift of Cernak and become that type of player. Don't really need offense from him, just shutdown defense with a mean streak making it impossible for the other forwards to get around him.

Can't believe being sent down didn't ruin him.

Love this board.. we are simultaneously not tanking hard enough but not competing well enough.

Simultaneously only draft for size but are soft and have no focus on toughness.

To quote one of the best ITYSL skits..

You don't wanna help, you just wanna yell.

The Xhekaj conundrum... what do we do with him? I was surprised he got sent down and has been there as long as he has. There's not really an end in sight for his stint either, which I find odd.

I want him on the team, obviously. I think he brings a skillset none of our guys have, and his presence does calm a lot of things down in scrums and after whistles. But other GMs have probably noticed this, and he probably has value around the league because of this. Does Kent use him to solve our D logjam problems and get a better forward?

No because then you're searching forever for a player who can do what he does.

He's unique and we got him. We aren't giving him up, we are just allowing him to develop.

I will never underestimate how dumb Habs management can be and won't be surprised one bit if Hughes gets us another Newhook project for Xhekaj. I will be pissed and will seriously consider not watching this team anymore, but I won't be surprised.

They can't be that daft. The best teams are all tough one way or another it's always been that way. The very best enforcers don't have to fight.
One of my favorites was Larry Robinson he didn't fight much but when he did it set the tone. To this day I give him credit for turning around a playoff series against Boston when one of their belligerents finally made him lose it. It was probably his only fight that season and the end result explained why that was.

Nothing wrong with Habs management this time around. They haven't been perfect, but far from dumb.

Great point! Not same skill set, but if Arber can become someone who does not have to regularly fight and can set the tone with his presence, Habs will have a gem.

I agree I'm sure they want toughness but they want it in a package that can also play hockey at a high level.
People never gave Chris Nilan enough credit for his hockey abilities.
Amazingly enough Nilan's most penalized season was also his highest scoring season.
Hughes grew up with this stuff.
