Player Discussion Arber Xhekaj: The Sheriff

Lucic is a weird one. He is filthy rich, he maybe has one year in him. He is paid nothing compared to what he made the previous seasons. I doubt he will want to jeopardize his life post retirement by fighting all NHL young guns.

Reaves and Lucic can't even take regular shifts. If having Arber forces teams in the division to pick up scrubs like that it's only a good thing for us in the long run. He's young enough that he could be the top heavyweight in the league for a decade.
As I posted, If reaves or lucic try one of their staged fights, they'll get cooked like Kassian did. Wifi still has a lot to learn but he's bigger than Reaves, the same size as lucic and with serious KO power

Xhekaj needs to play the game with a rugged edge, finishing his checks and focusing on hockey. He may have to address thuggery on occasion but fighting because some Neanderthal challenges you is unnecessary. When you become the meanest SOB in the valley you are usually left alone.

The difference between Xhekaj and the 4 players you mention is that Arber can actually play hockey.
this too

If the draft was redone where do you think he gets drafted? I think in the 1st round.
late 1st round pick. easily

Surprised Lucic vs Reaves never happened

Xhekaj cannot be considered number one until he fights and defeats Lucic. That is how I see it, and what I think Xhekaj believes. One thing is certain, his fighting will be tested on multiple occasions this season if he remains healthy.

Mid-life crisis. He's going to be punching everything that moves trying to relive his youth. Especially with the life expectancy in western nations rapidly deteriorating, he's probably more than half-way through his life with all the punches he's taken to the head.

Two beauty goals today and one impressive rush.

What an astounding development curve. When we first signed him he looked like he could be a solid 3rd pair shut down guy if everything went absolutely right.
You could tell last year that he has a knack for scoring goals. The thing is all his other attributes including his smarts are still so raw he can't help but get better. When you think about it a guy like Ghule has already been to a perfection camp Xhekaj has yet to attend one.

The way it is unfolding we are going to have great defense. Maybe 2 or 3 years away tops.

Matheson on right side with Mailloux and Barron. That is a strong side. Guhle with Wifi on left. With Hutson next year. Trudeau and Endstrom knocking on the door. That is going to be great defense.

Could trade Matheson during off season of '25 for big haul and Reinbacher be ready by then.

Some of these assets will have to be traded to get more offensive punch upfront. Get prepared to lose some popular ones.

That's a pretty pessimistic view. If he's more than half way through his life, then I've been dead for more than 10 years. Probably explains why I feel so poorly.

By the summer of 2025 I doubt, with his history of injuries, you're going to recover a haul for Matheson. If you want to recover maximum value, he has to be traded this year.

Life expectancy is expected to drop significantly in the next few years. Despite everyone thinking high level exercise is good, not that many athletes make it into their 80s. Looch is 35, do you think he'll make it past 70?

there's a bit of difference between high-level fitness and a career of concussions and mobility-limiting injuries that might impact things. And that's without taking non-exercise lifestyle into account

For me, that ship has long sailed.
